cowboy junkies – ooh las vegas
Well, I spend all night with the dealer
Tryin’ to get ahead
Spend all day at the Holiday Inn
Tryin’ to get out of bed
Jerzy Russian
Off in which direction? North, south, east, west, up, or down?
raven
For those of you who missed it, here’s the entire Southern University “Human Juke Box” halftime show from yesterday! Wait for the golden bikinis and the whip/ nae nae!
BillinGlendaleCA
@Jerzy Russian: Up and West.
Jerzy Russian
@BillinGlendaleCA:
Good for him. It is nicer out here.
OzarkHillbilly
@Jerzy Russian: Nicer than what? Hell?
geg6
My sympathies, Cole. The only places I hate more than Vegas are Texas and Florida (with a few exceptions in both states). This is why I’ve quit attending national conferences.
Jerzy Russian
@OzarkHillbilly:
Actually, I am not sure of that. All of the people I like to hang out with will surely end up in Hell, so it will eventually be the place to be.
Tommy
@geg6: Vegas. My brother who is many years younger than me used to think it was so cool I went to Vegas a few times a year for conferences. On the company dime. Now he goes 4-6 times and year and understands. Hates it. I am like I told you so.

Pope John LXVI
By John Podhoretz
The pope endorsed the Iran deal, the UN’s environmentalist goals and what amounts to a worldwide open-borders policy on refugees — and offered a very specific view of how to promote development in the Third World that’s straight out of a left-wing textbook.
“The International Financial Agencies,” the pope said, “should care for the sustainable development of countries and should ensure that they are not subjected to oppressive lending systems which, far from promoting progress, subject people to mechanisms which generate greater poverty, exclusion and dependence.”
We’re told we must not view the pope’s expression of views on contemporary subjects through the lens of day-to-day issues — that we belittle him and ourselves by examining his words through an ideological filter.
Because of the awesome position he holds, and by dint of his own teachings and his life and teachings before he rose to service as the Vicar of Christ, Francis is said to be deeper and loftier than mere politics.
Sorry: When the pontiff sounds less like a theological leader and more like the 8 p.m. host on MSNBC or the editor of Mother Jones, what’s a guy to do?
Pope Francis is entirely within his rights to become the world’s foremost liberal. But, since that’s what he is, it can’t be wrong to say so.

I hate Vegas and when I used to commute to LA (for 4-5 week jobs) I’d try to go through Vegas in the middle of the night and as fast the law would allow (and by that I mean, as long as the Fuzz zipped past me at 100+ I figured I was ok).
Safe travels and I hope you remembered your pants.

@Gimlet:
Gimlet, I implore you. Please please PLEASE provide links. The pieces you quote are often very interesting, but it is beyond frustrating not to be given the source and a link for the full read.
I know I have (politely, I think) asked you for links on at least three occasions. Several others have asked as well. If you are going to share information from other publications, it is conventional courtesy to provide a link to the source.
Please.

http://nypost.com/2015/09/25/pope-francis-is-just-another-liberal-political-pundit/ It appears that this is the Podhoretz opinion piece. NY Post appears quite the outfit.

Safe travels.
I do hope that you go on a Hoover dam tour-totally worth it.
And that you get some food suggestions from Diners Drive-ins and Dives .
I'mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet
@SiubhanDuinne: I agree that links are nice, but don’t let it get to you. Highlight a sentence or two, copy, paste into Google, is usually a reliable way to get to the source.
Cheers,
Scott.

Happy jet trails, John.
Have some Thai food for me.
PS: Who’s got piglets and frat brothers care?

@I’mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet:
Seconded.

As the old joke goes:
First prize is two nights in Las Vegas! Second prize is three nights in Las Vegas…

Also, John, Vegas is a tricky place for food. Get far off the strip to get decent food: go where the locals go, if at all possible.
We were glad we had a car the last time we were there (my only non-work trip to Vegas). I also recommend a trip to Red Rock Canyon, and to Hoover Dam. I haven’t been since the crazy new high bridge was built. I’m curious but I’d only fly to Vegas now to be a landing spot to access Zion N.P. & Bryce Canyon.
Cckids
Hi, John & welcome to Vegas! Though I hesitate to call it home after the hate that’s getting thrown at my town :)
There are fun things to do without gambling. You’ll like Blue Man. Check out the art at City Center, or the Picasso exhibit at Bellagio. Go to the Mob Museum. If you can get off-strip, go to Red Rock Canyon (early, it’s still too fricking hot), or to the Desert Springs Preserve.
I’d tell you to see the cat circus at Planet Hollywood, but it’s dark this week.
Hang out & people watch, this is a good place for it. You’re here on weekdays, so crowds will be smaller.
And have a good time! As Lincoln supposedly said, “Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Not always true, but it fits when you’re here for a few days.
Origuy
Several people have mentioned Red Rock Canyon and Hoover Dam, but how about Valley of Fire State Park? About an hour outside of Vegas, it’s got petroglyphs and some beautiful rock formations.
SoupCatcher
In N Out and Tommy’s both have Vegas locations.
Enjoy!
SoupCatcher
@SoupCatcher:
Harumph. Didn’t get the Tommy’s link in there in time.
Suzanne
@Cckids: Word. Vegas isn’t my favorite place to go by any stretch, but one can decide to make the best of it and enjoy some novelty.
I mean, shit. I had to go to San Antonio for a conference earlier in the year, and I ended up on the Riverwalk during Spring Break. Holy drunk bros. Not my scene. Guess what? I had fun, because I kept an open mind, and understood that it is okay to not do the same shit I usually do on Saturday night.

@rikyrah
Made a point of steering clear of that show after those articles about what a virulent, hateful homophobe Guy F. is came out a few years ago.

@raven: Gram Parsons!

Back in the late 60s/early 70s LV was my stopping off place on my every 3-4 months trip from UC Boulder and my home in SoCal. It was great for a starving student, cheap hotel rooms and cheap all you can eat buffets. It still had a somewhat sleazy presence which I enjoyed especially in North LV. Was there in the early 90s and it was terrible; the sleazliness was gone and the ca$ions had gone for the middle class and so not so cheap. Bring back the sleaze!
Turbulence
Hey Cole, granted, Vegas sucks, but you should go see a Cirque de Soleil show while you’re there.

@raven:
Nothing against the Cowboy Junkies, but I strongly prefer the original, from “Grievous Angel.”
SiubhanDuinne
@I’mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet:
Yes, and that’s what I do. Trying not to let it get to me, and if it were an occasional lapse I wouldn’t mind and wouldn’t say anything, but gimlet seems to have a passive-aggressive aversion to providing links/sources.

@geg6: Before I retired we had our conferences in New Orleans. It was wonderful.
Great food, great music (both jazz and a symphonic orchestra) and a huge learning experience, along with lots of private sector sales efforts.
It was all good, very good. Pre Katrina, haven’t been there since the Bush catastrophe.
Princess
@SiubhanDuinne: Hmm, srv is just the same. Coincidence? I wonder if anyone has ever seen the two of them at the same time?
A guy
New Orleans was a gem before Mother Nature tried to cure the problem?,. Lol. I travelled to New Orleans for the 93 sugar bowl. It was an absolutely disgusting place. My only problem with bush for failing finishing it off when he had the Katrina chance.

Another option if you have a car and it’s hot as blazes is to go up to Ski Las Vegas. I did the drive a number of years ago and you can get up into the pines and (relatively) cool air. Obviously not ski season cool, but refreshing. Ahhhh.
