@amk: I agree he’s talking about the two parties, and I think he’s right, Dems do tend to panic. But I think the media question is just as important. I get my Beltway coverage from EvenTheOnceAllegedlyLiberalMSNBC (did you see they’re gonna give morning joe another hour!), and Hillary Clinton’s campaign is treated as a rolling disaster– her lead over Sanders in Iowa is barely in double digits! Why doesn’t she just get out? And if you add in Joe Biden…!
And when she’s interviewed, as she was today by Savannah Guthrie (I caught some of it in my car) a good chunk of the questions seem to be endless variants on “Why do people hate you so much?” Does Jeb get that ? I genuinely don’t know
ETA: and on that network, I just saw a poll that shows Kasich has dropped from 12 to 6 in NH in the last month. One is pleased.

its an open thread and I did promise I would post this as soon as I could. I would wait until later but its time for bed.
Bleu Cheese Cheesecake:
crust:
1-1/2 C ground walnuts
3 Tbls Butter
Mix together in a bowl then press the mixture into the bottom of a 9” springform pan – see instructions below
Cheesecake:
2 8oz cream cheese
10oz blue cheese, finely crumbled
4 eggs
1/4 C sour cream
½ C toaster walnuts, chopped (this is optional)
⅛ tsp cracked pepper
Make sure everything is at room temp before you begin. Well, everything but the oven which should be at 350F (about 180C)!
Prepare a 9” springform pan. I line mine with parchment paper (bottom and sides and butter the paper or you could use spray release). Press the ground walnut crust into the bottom so its all ready for the cake.
A NOTE ON BAIN MARIE:
Someone here said they never use the water bath for cheescake. I use one every time because I believe the top will crack and the cooking can be uneven without it. But YMMV and you certainly don’t have to use it.
Building the cheesecake:
You can do this by hand (I have) it is a giant pain! A mixer with a paddle attachment is really what you want.
In the mixer bowl with the paddle, combine the cream cheese, blue cheese, black pepper and chopped walnuts(optional), beat on medium speed for about four minutes until the mixture is light and creamy, scraping the bowl a couple of times to make sure everything is combined. Then, one at a time, beat in the eggs (remember to scrape the bowl after each egg). Once everything has come together into a nice smooth mix turn the mixer down to medium-low and add the sour cream. Scrape and stir until everything is combined. Most Blue’s seem to be salty enough on their own but if you prefer your food saltier you could add a pinch when beating the cheese.
Pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Set the pan on criss-crossed sheets of aluminum foil and bring up the edges so that will prevent water from seeping in. Put the cake pan into the larger baking pan. Slide the center oven rack out part way and carefully pour in enough simmering water to come about halfway up the sides of the cake pan. Close the oven door and bake for 45 minutes. Turn off the oven and let the cheesecake rest for another hour as the oven cools (don’t open the door!). Take the cheesecake out of the oven (it should be slightly jiggly but not soupy in the center), cool it on a rack for another hour, then cover it tightly with plastic wrap and put it into the refrigerator overnight. You could also decorate the top with walnut halves if you wanted.
To me the cool thing about this, besides people not knowing what to think when you tell them that its a clue cheese cheesecake, is that this can be an appetizer, main dish or dessert depending on what you want to do with it.
As an opener I would put a small slice on a bed of young greens dressed with a walnut oil-raspberry vinaigrette paired with a riesling (the sweetness really goes well against the blue).
For a light main course you could have it with a salad or a fruit salad.
Cheese is often used as dessert in Europe and this would certainly be a different way to present it. I’d have citrus fruit with it and maybe a port wine.

Good football take mixed with insane political beliefs….
Are you Rush Limbaugh?
Right to Rise
@BillinGlendaleCA:
A Marxist believes, first, that all cultural, political, philosophical, and religious beliefs are produced primarily by material conditions. For example, a Marxist holds that the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution is not the purest expression of timeless principles and philosophical truths, but the mere product of the material forces of the late 18th Century, used as weapons in the struggle of the rising capitalist merchants of American vs. the ruling monarchy/aristocracy of Britain.
Marxists also believe that the history of humanity is the history of class struggle. Slave against master, serf against landlord, bourgeoisie against feudal lords. Through this struggle and conflict, society is propelled successively into “higher” stages through bloody class conflict. The last conflict is believed to be that of the “proletariat” or workers against the capitalists or “bourgeoisie”.
The genius of America is that it has shown an alternative to this dark, bloody, cynical take on human history, one which Jeb Bush shares.

The Gilded Age, the Pinkertons, the Transcontinental Railroad, FDR’s entire presidency – American history is thick with class struggle. The Bushes, with George’s policies that made the rich vastly richer and abandoned New Orleans’ poor to die, are neck deep in it. The only more powerful factor in American history has been racial struggle, and that is often interpreted as a version of economic class struggle with simplified labels.

Looking back in history, didn’t Karl Rove’s American Crossness PAC or whatever it’s called spend like $140 million in 2012 for no wins? And Sheldon Adelson spent more than $100 million on Newt and Mitt and got no wins? All that cash for nothing. Some of it probably even traveled in Brinks trucks.
What does 2016 have in common with 2012? I wonder…

@efgoldman: “It’s meant to connote excitement” was almost enough to make his Colbert interview worth watching.
Nothing could make me watch John McCain tonight. If Colbert owns, eviscerates, annihilates, decimates or desecrates the old warmonger, I’ll watch the clip.

@Yatsuno:
But here’s the thing. Trump Trio still represent a majority of GOP leaning citizens. By any measure, a sizable chunk of the electorate are deeply unhappy with the GOP and want action, even if that action would be bad for the country.
These people may have originally been cultivated by the phony grass route machinations that gave us the Tea Party, but that doesn’t matter anymore. These people are a legitimate force.
Jeb! or Rubio or Kasich may end up the being the nominee, but what happens if they ignore or disdain the wishes of these people?

Roughly $2 billion was spent on winning the presidency in 2012 roughly divided between Obama and Romney. Another $5 billion or so was spent on all the other races. Rove spent $300 million total and got zip.

Bush3 might be polling 11% nationally (well, in one poll at least), but he is 6th in Iowa on average at the moment. Those 8 days between Iowa and New Hampshire will be about whether Carson can follow up Iowa with a good showing in New Hampshire, how much Trump is going to win New Hampshire by, and how high Bush3 has to finish to not call curtains on his campaign.

@efgoldman:
I use the term “friends” in its political sense. I think the comparison of Jeb! and Philbin is rather unfair to Philbin – sucky coach, yes, in the days when I watched the NFL, but a decent man. Jeb! is just a slimy, entitled little weasel.

What a piece of work! Lindsey Graham wants federal aide for South Crolina. When asked about his vote against helping New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy, he said this:
“I’m all for helping the people in New Jersey. I don’t really remember me voting that way,” Graham said.
Pressed further, he said: “Anyway, I don’t really recall that, but I’d be glad to look and tell you why I did vote no, if I did.”

@Right to Rise: Late to what is most likely a dead thread, but I’ve gotta ask. Why the quotation marks around the words fresh look? Is it a fresh look or isn’t it? Were you meaning to emphasize those two words? If so, that’s really not the way to do it. By using quotation marks, you’ve called into question whether anyone is giving JEB? a fresh look at all. You’ve rendered your entire statement comical, a joke. But maybe that has been your intent all along.

I dont think Dems are panicking at all… plenty would prefer a Sanders victory. Just as plenty of conservatives would prefer Carson or Trump… Weigel’s tweet really has it all wrong.
What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?
@cokane: I think he was being sarcastic but I’m not sure. All the panic right now is definitely on the right.
cokane
@What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?: Well, I think Hillary’s people might be panicked a tad… but Hillary does not equal all Dems. And if that’s Weigel’s angle… well Jeb’s campaign is most definitely panicked (or already resigned to defeat). And I think most Dems are pretty confident Sanders or Biden could compete just fine against whatever trash emerges from the GOP field.
