Let’s go Pens (for those of you who do not want to discuss the NFL).

So happy to have hockey back. I missed one or two Pens games last year and this year I am shooting for 100%.

Oh, and I did not know that Zandar posted the same damned thing about Carson. Wasn’t paying attention.

    OK, this is it, I’m admitting it up front:

    I like hockey, but I don’t follow the NHL because I don’t know the schedule.

    With football, it’s easy: Friday nights is high school, Saturday is college, Sunday is NFL. The exceptions prove the rule.

    Baseball? Everyday during the season, with the occasional Monday or Thursday off.

    Basketball? Big 10 plays Mondays, Wednesdays, and weekends during the season, more Sundays once the NFL season is over. Can’t figure out the NBA, so I don’t watch the NBA during the season.

    If I could figure out the rhythm of the NHL season, I’d be a little more actively involved as a Blues or Blackhawks fan.

    Is there a rule for when NHL teams play?

    Was happy to see the NY Rangers beat last year’s champs, the Chicago Rapehawks last night. Your Pens should be improved this year.

    @Richard mayhew:

    That sounds like the NBA. Two? Four? If I assume the first, the second is an imposition. If I assume the second, the first is going to leave me with a serious hockey jones. Also, there come these gaps of four or five days where there is no action at all, maybe longer, and who knows why?

    And are these the same days for the same teams throughout the season? No.

    I confess to a type of entertainment laziness: If I have to track down when the games are going to be played, I really don’t need to follow the team. This may also be why I don’t watch any new shows on TV until I can binge watch them.

    The NHL and the NBA need to carve out their nights of the week the way the NFL does: NBA Thursday! NHL Tuesday! Every team plays, every fan gets a fix, every water cooler supports an argument.

    Pens will go wherever their goalie “Flower” takes them. If his GAA is near 3.0 then Sid, Malkin, Kessel, et al, spend extra time backchecking and their points and offence (Canadian spelling) suffer. Pens also need to match teams that check hard and those w hot goalies. A team w a strong offence sometimes need to run hot goalies — bump him, agitate. See TB Lightning from last year. Open up space for the snipers.

    Talent alone will not take them to conf final.

    East teams to beat are TB, NYR, & Mont.
    West are STL, Min, SJ. Blackhawks will not repeat.

    I pick TB to beat STL in 7 for Cup. Bishop doesn’t have a stellar yr in goal for TB but Yzerman as GM is money. He has learned much from Scotty Bowman. Hitchcock finally presses the right buttons and gets STL to a finals but cant manage to win final game on the road.

    Or not…

    @Gin & Tonic: Sometimes, in October it isn’t. I spent a summer working in Raleigh and a couple of colleagues went to a Bulls game. They were stunned that I’d never been to a Triple A game. So what kind of baseball games have you been to then? A few World Series home games, I told them and that seemed to explain it. Clearly they were not serious baseball fans or they might have figured it out knowing where I was from…

    Again, the exceptions that prove the rule.

    I’m going to an NIU game on a Tuesday night in November. But everyone knows it should have been on Saturday, they’re just taking advantage of the Thanksgiving week to have a little more prep time. It goes against the rhythm of the college football week, but the rhythm is still strong.

    I think Blues went to Finals first or second year of franchise. But got swept (me thinks) – 1969 maybe. But Hitch wants to break that first round albatross. This should be the year unless Nashville plays gonzo. They have the horses and a smart coach.

    Be sure to view the full Phila-TB 3-on-3 OT session. There had to be ten odd-man breaks in 2:17. Oh, and a missed penalty shot.

    Seriously, check out the OT. Great stuff!

    @JG:

    We moved from a city where hockey didn’t exist to St. Louis in ’69. The Blues went to the Finals their first three years (68, 69, 70), never won, never returned.

    My brother-in-law bleeds for the Blues, but he’s pushing 70, so time may be running out. Blues fans are almost Cub-like in their suffering, but more hopeful (until this year).

    Hockey is my yearly mistress. I love it! Been a fan for 40 yrs. Played as a teenage for 6 yrs. I must have been a Canadian in a past life. First song I taught to my now 20yo daughter was Canadian National Anthem.

    I’m single now. I’m shocked!

    I don’t follow hockey much at all except for bandwagon Bruins fandom.

    And I’m cool with that, even if you’re not. I don’t care. I can’t invest in hockey given my focus on the NFL.

    From the chatter I hear the Bruins will suck this year, so I will pay 5% attention till March and then if they are in the playoffs, maybe more….

    I skated once in my life and I was holding hands with a girl when her “boyfriend” skated up and shoved me down, my face on the ice, my teeth ruined. Last time I ice skated.

    You’re shooting to miss 100% of the Pens’ games and then fail on the first hurdle?

    Could take up following soccer, Mr Cole. You know, the round football thing.
