Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This fight is for everything.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

“Squeaker” McCarthy

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Let’s finish the job.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

T R E 4 5 O N

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

So ALCS game six is all tied up in the bottom of the 8th and currently in a rain delay. Action is supposed to resume soon. Go Jays!

Please feel free to discuss whatever.

As a Red Sox fan, I find all the blue confusing. Also, these ballparks are charmless. Fenway Park in late October is a moody intense place where seemingly everyone in the park is on top of the action.

Betty, your fantastic sketch made me think of this quote from Bob Ross:

I think each of us, sometime during our life, has wanted to paint a picture. I think there’s an artist hidden in every single one of us. And here we will show you how to bring that artist out, to put it on canvas. Because you, too, can paint almighty pictures.

@benw: Thank you! I used to watch Bob Ross all the time — happy little clouds! He and my father almost got in a fist fight once (this was in the late 80s / early 90s, I think). Mr. Ross had set up his easel and was preparing to film a painting session at my dad’s marina, and my dad was pissed off because he felt like the taping was interfering with business.

So, summary of the Hillary event in Alexandria this morning — Good, enthusiastic crowd. It took a while to build, but by the time the speechifying started the plaza was full.

Hillary gave a very good speech. She devoted a good bit of it to recapping how Obama rescued the economy despite relentless opposition from Republicans, and declared that he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. She specifically mentioned Biden, saying she agrees with him that the Obama record is worth defending. She mentioned the law exempting the gun industry from liability, and how it was a present to the NRA, but didn’t mention Bernie, which is probably the best way to handle the issue. (It can’t really be called negative campaigning if she only mentions positive things about herself that he happens not to share.) Talked a lot about family leave, minimum wage, college affordability, voting rights. Plenty of good applause lines and some good stories.

The only things I would fault the campaign for were having the initial (brief) speakers, and then nothing for a long time before Hillary and McAuliffe came out. (Long waits are par for the course, but the big gap in the middle wasn’t.) More important, for an event that was billed as a grassroots organizing event (even though it was really a rally), there wasn’t enough organizing going on. Most likely this was because there isn’t going to be any campaign activity or offices until close to the primary in March, but it would have been good to at least try to get people to commit to something.

But overall, it was a fun event, a good speech, and I got to stand ten feet in front of the next president, which is pretty darn cool.

I roamed around, — it’s very walkable — visited the Torpedo Factory Craft Galleries and went into DC for a few hours at one of the Smithsonians. My friend and his intended had the marriage ceremony and reception in an old mansion over looking the river. It was a lovely setting. A good weekend all around.

Old Rose: 1,500 people went into the sea when Titanic sank from under us. There were twenty boats floating nearby, and only one came back. One. Six were saved from the water, myself included. Six, out of 1,500. Afterward, the 700 people left in the boats had nothing to do but wait… wait to die, wait to live, wait for an absolution, which would never come.

    I just love that line.
