Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When we show up, we win.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

In my day, never was longer.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

I was promised a recession.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Republicans do not pay their debts.

‘Museums aren’t America’s attic for its racist shit.’

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Republicans in disarray!

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

When did car companies stop putting spare tires of some sort in cars?

I was perusing through car options on-line and a large number of the newer fangled cars no longer come with a spare tire. I’m not talking about a full sized spare, just the donut.

I remember when the donut tire was a sign of society going to hell in a handbasket because you no longer had full sized spare tires, though VW used to have full sized spares in their cars longer than any auto company I’ve seen.

Tire patching goo and an electric air pump don’t work on a side wall blow out and if you have a side wall blow out in a less than heavily populated area you would just be SOL.

Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg has a new book, America Ascendant, based on several years of public policy polling. A very cursory overview is in Huffpo

The Republican Party, as Greenberg describes it, is “a rural, white, married, evangelical, religious party in a country that’s becoming less married, more secular, more urban.” The “furious counter-revolution” the party has waged for a decade to keep the “new American majority” from governing, he said, has “alienated the Republican Party from the country.”

An interesting and, I imagine, poll supported bit of advice for the Dems in 2016 my not be liked by some:

Bill Clinton’s former pollster thinks it’s a mistake for Democratic presidential candidates to essentially run for President Barack Obama’s “third term.”

“That’s not what the country wants. It’s not what the base of the Democratic Party wants,” said longtime Democratic pollster Stanley Greenberg, whose past clients include Clinton and Vice President Al Gore. “The Democratic Party is waiting for a president who will articulate the scale of the problems we face and challenge them to address it.”

Greenberg thinks it’s time to go bigger.
    …
Greenberg argues in the book that these revolutionary changes, including a population that is growing younger and more racially and culturally diverse, will lead to a period in which America will be “exceptional again.” But he believes that renewal will require a period of sustained political reform, comparable to the Progressive Era at the turn of the 20th century, and the defeat of the “counter-revolution” being waged by the modern Republican Party.

In an interview at the link, he fleshes out his ideas a bit more.

    So anyway, that’s happening.

How much does the weight of a spare tire donut actually weigh? It can’t be enough to boost mileage much at all. I mean chuck in the extra sheet metal weight for having to accommodate the donut and you have maybe a hundred pounds on a three thousand pound vehicle.

    West Ham United myself.

This London fan map is amazing for the allegiances to the teams that aren’t in the Premier League, or at least aren’t every year. I’m fascinated at the differences between how Britons and Americans organize their sport. I can only think of two Scottish teams and one English team (ex-Wimbledon, now MK Dons) who have moved.

If Bledsoe had not had a season ending injury in 2001 (? can’t remember exact year) Brady would probably still be on someone’s bench, and the Pats would be like any other run of the mill team.

I definitely had TnH pied. There was no entertainment value there at all, and the responses were not entertaining either. RtR, OTOH, is a perfect simulation of a Bushbot, and that’s entertaining. Book it, libs! Although the racism was a bit much, and the new incarnation featured some of that at first.

@seaboogie: it’s really not that easy. If you start banning by ISP, then you are going to wipe out a lot of people. Banning by IP doesn’t work for most of us since we can easily change that. So really you are stuck banning by email and nym. Which is obviously a moving target, but it takes a certain amount of work on their part, so maybe they’ll go away

However, I can get a new IP address by telling my router “refresh”, or if the power goes out for either me (doubtful, I’ve got a UPS on the router/cablemodem/WAP, as well as both cable boxes) or for the ISP (the local servers are less than a mile away, but they have a generator).
