Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

I’m more Christian than these people and I’m an atheist.

The lights are all blinking red.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

No Justins, No Peace

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Battle won, war still ongoing.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

I was confident that someone would point it out and thought why not me.

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

When we show up, we win.

This country desperately needs a functioning Fourth Estate.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Everybody saw this coming.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

No one could have predicted…

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Chutkan laughs. Lauro sits back down.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

BREAKING: NHDP Chair Pens Letter to Secretary of State Stating Sanders Is a Democrat https://t.co/GtwNSR1Ua9 #fitn #nhpolitics

— Judy Reardon (@JudyReardon) October 29, 2015

Yes, my title is snark. Or, in the words of underrated author R.A. Lafferty: Tongue so firmly in cheek as to protrude from the vulgar bodily orifice.

From the linked article:

New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Raymond Buckley has written a letter to N.H. Secretary of State Bill Gardner stating Sen. Bernie Sanders is considered a member of the Democratic Party. The letter will be submitted to the Secretary of State as part of a package establishing Sanders satisfies the New Hampshire state law requiring a candidate to be a registered member of the party whose nomination he or she is seeking in order to appear on a New Hampshire primary ballot…

Shortly after Sanders announced last spring he was seeking the Democratic nomination for president, Secretary of State Gardner questioned whether Sanders would satisfy state law since he is not registered to vote in Vermont as a Democrat. Vermont is one of several states that does not register voters by party affiliation.

In the past, Gardner has not found that to be an obstacle. He raised no concerns when former Vermont Gov. [Howard Dean] filed to run in the Democratic primary for President in 2004 or when George H. W. Bush filed to run for the Republican nomination for president in 1980 and 1988 and George W. Bush filed in 2000 and 2004, even though their home state of Texas does not register voters by party… But Gardner suggested that Sanders potentially could be treated differently from the two George Bushes, Al Gore and Howard Dean because the fact Sanders in the past has declined to accept Democratic nominations for U.S. Senate elections in Vermont.

Political parties, however, get to determine who their members are, not the government, according to the U.S. Supreme Court, and that is why Buckley’s letter to Gardner stating Sanders is considered a member of the Democratic Party is so significant…

Despite the ongoing speculation, there is no question that Sanders’ name will be on the ballot for the New Hampshire presidential primary. The only question is whether he and the Democratic Party will be forced to go to court to get his name on the ballot.

More details at the link. No idea why Gardner, who is himself a Democrat, would decide to be so punctilious about Sanders, except that he’s one of those Granite Headers Staters whose primary allegiance is to New Hampshire’s valuable “First in the Nation” status…

I never liked that Sanders wasn’t a Democrat, but he should be on the ballot.

It would have been an interesting issue if Sanders were from a state that allowed party registration.

    …

Will the Democratic Party screw a significant fraction of it’s membership?

Would the Democratic Party have three Republicans in the first of their few Democratic debates?

    …

The second question answers the first for me. YMMV.

Keeping Sanders out just means that the NH primary would mean even less than it already will. If you want to keep the quadrennial bucks flowing, you want a contest on both sides.

@NotMax: thanks, i can’t imagine having that view every day. the original plan was for sunrise, but the forecast showed rain for several mornings in a row. truth be told, i was more scared on the drive up since i could see where i’d be going if i screwed up.

the backside of haleakala from hana, now that was harrowing to me. although once past the rough and narrow cliff-side roads, it was very scenic.

Hoping you had a wonderful and relaxing visit. Unusual amount of rain this summer and fall, for sure.

Stuffed in a drawer or box somewhere in the abode is a photo of a rainbow across the isthmus, stretching all the way from the ocean at Kihei to the ocean at Paia.

@Gin & Tonic: There is a current use of “ethering” that arose from the rap music world starting in the late 90s, which is how I suspect Weigel is using the word:

Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones aka Nas (American Rapper)… Had an ongoing beef with fellow New York rapper Jay-Z. Which began from Memphis Bleek (Rapper affiliated with Jay-Z), having references to Nas from his debut album ‘Coming of Age’

Nas retaliated in 1999 on his album, Nastradamus.

This carried on and the diss record, Ether, was released on Nas’s album ‘Stillmatic’ in December 2001.

This diss track, is widely recognised as one of the best of it’s kind throwing insults at Nas’s rival left, right and centre.

This rivalry ended in 2005, where Jay-Z brought Nas onstage and they performed together.

{Zombie Paul Harvey in his hip-hop outfit (he’s changed a lot since he died)}: “And now you know…the rest…of the story.”

Except that stupid Urban Dictionary entry doesn’t actually define the term. You can sort of get it from the couple of examples given, but . . .

Instead of apartments (of which there are relatively few), look for what are called ohana cottages.

Homeowners are allowed to build a separate cottage on their property. Intended to be used by extended family (ohana), in reality they are rented out and the income used to pay (or help to pay) the mortgage.

Ohana rentals have slowly crept upward, but still values to be found in 1- or 2-bedroom cottages outside of the big towns.
