Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

I did not have telepathic declassification on my 2022 bingo card.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

No one could have predicted…

Republicans do not pay their debts.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

How many chickens can you see?

Ever since I saw the awful “Jurassic World” the other day, I can’t stop seeing the velociraptor in them.

The most obvious hen (orange, at left) is my favorite: Ravenclaw. She’s the most adventurous.

I don’t know how to single out an individual tweet, but Kevin Kruse caught a Jeb ad using a NYT graph showing a collapse in trust in gov’t and blaming Obama. Trouble is, the steep drop it shows took place under Obama’s predecessor. Can’t remember that guy’s name just now.

Scaramouche! Mama mia! Bring ’round the mirthmobile, it is the 40th anniversary of “Bohemian Rhapsody”! Brian May:

    RECORDING ‘THAT’ RIFF

The heavy bit was a great opportunity for us to be at full pelt as a rock band. But that big, heavy riff came from Freddie, not me. That was something he played with his left hand in octaves on the piano. So I had that as a guide – and that’s very hard to do, because Freddie’s piano playing was exceptional, although he didn’t think so. In fact, he thought he was a bit of a mediocre piano player and stopped doing it later on in our career.

GETTING THE SONG PLAYED ON RADIO

We were told it was going to be a hard sell, but it ended up being easy because Kenny Everett stole the tape from a playback session we had to launch the Night At The Opera album and took it upon himself to go out and play it to death.

That made everybody else sit up. All the rest of the radio outlets thought: “Oh God, we’d better get on this quick or else we’ll be left behind!”

    Haha. MSM caught doing journalism.

Sen. Rand Paul’s so-called “filibuster” against the budget deal, a move his campaign hyped repeatedly and which the Kentucky senator used as a rallying cry at last night’s debate, wasn’t a filibuster at all.

In fact, it wasn’t even a long speech.

The presidential hopeful took to the Senate floor at 2:46 p.m. and ended his remarks less than twenty minutes later.

I think Jeb’s only path to honor is to disappear into the Bermuda Triangle. Question is, can there be a state funeral with no body?

The pair of Russian Bear Bombers had failed to respond to radio calls as they advanced toward the vicinity of the USS Ronald Reagan, and four F/A-18 Super Hornets were deployed, U.S. Navy officials said. Once under American escort, the Russian bombers skimmed the water at an altitude of 500 feet and came within one nautical mile of the aircraft carrier.

A sad day when the Russians humiliate the crew of Ronald Reagan’s namesake.

This weakness is going to get a lot of people killed.

    Luvvie has written about Zola:

    ………….

Lessons from Zola’s Story: The Great Saga of Trapping and Mayhem
    Awesomely Luvvie — October 29, 2015 2 25
By now, you’ve probably heard about the epic tale told by a woman named Zola, about a trip to Florida involving Jess, Z, and Jarrett. If you have not heard of this story, you have not been on the internet for the last 36 hours, and you were probably being productive with your life. Kudos. The rest of us, meanwhile, have been hemmed up as we’ve been riveted by the tales of trapping gone wrong, told by Zola on Twitter. HERE IS THE STORY. READ IT.

I have spent the last day hollering at this story. Zola’s story gave me drama, suspense, comedy and thriller. It was like a ratchet Lifetime Movie and it is worthy of big screen. I’m honestly waiting for someone to run Zola a book deal so I can give her my money because she is a gifted storyteller.

One thing I really appreciated about the story, are the lessons Zola passed on to us. There were so many things to take away to apply to your own life. You might not realize that you could extract teachable moments from tales of 2 strippers taking an ill-forsaken trip to Florida, America’s penis. But you just gotta open your eyes and look all around you. There’s inspiration everywhere.

For example, I never knew “Vibing over our hoeism” is a perfectly acceptable pasttime. Does that mean you create a hoeism playlist and jam together in bonding of shared love of the traplife? Because if so, that sounds great and should be an Apple Music commercial. Or a Spotify playlist we can all subscribe to.

    Ahem.

No link to the polling firm; no crosstabs. I’m going to call it “Rasmussen” and remember Scott runs an R+9 to R+13 bias, and discount everything against Clinton by 9 points (at minimum), which reverses every slide using that data.

Ditto with Hispanics, African-Americans, Women, and anyone other than white guys.

There’s a lot of wishful thinking here about grassroots; I was looking at NH (which is next door) and Iowa (I grew up in Missouri and I have a sister in Nebraska). In NH you need very committed activists, which is precisely what Jeb seems to lack. His air war on Manchester, Concord, and Boston-area TV is not yielding much at all, even if he is taking votes away from Kasich (yet to be verified). He needs to take votes away from Trump. In Iowa the air war is likely to be more effective; but the caucuses do require you have dedicated activists at every single caucus, not just a “coordinator” to handle a dozen counties — some holding one caucus and some holding multiples, and sending a guy to the county seat at 10pm with the results to tally them all.

Sure they have weaknesses, but a lot less than other teams.

NE hasn’t even really used their secret weapon yet. Won’t be used tonight either.

I’m very interested in this game because Miami has played real well since they fired their terrible coach, but it’s been against two weak teams. So, is it real? We’ll find out tonight. On paper the Dolphins are well matched against the Patriots- they can run, they can make big plays, they’ve got a good defensive front line.

When Dunkirk happened, no one in Britain, even Churchill, had the slightest idea how this was all going to end, in detail. They didn’t know that the US would for sure enter the war and make the emphasis Europe, for example, which Hitler so conveniently gave FDR cover for. Even then, how exactly mainland Europe was going to be assaulted was totally up in the air at the time. In retrospect, it all looks so obvious, but everything is obvious in retrospect. ¡Heb! does not have any obvious path to the nomination now that he’s managed to come within inches of being tossed to the kiddie table.

He’s a troll who is pretending to be a paid Bush troll to mess with people around here. That’s it. I think he picked Bush because a) he figured liberals would be mad about the very idea of another Bush in office and it would be easy to rile people up and b) he figured Bush would be in it til the election and he’d get a whole year of fun out of it. Joke’s on him I guess.

(Paid trolls are not going to be posting here. They’re going to be in newspaper comment sections and places where more of a cross-section of voters will be. Trolling here gets you nothing but angry Democrats. Which may be fun but isn’t worth spending money on.)

    Send this to Jeb:

Last summer, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida asked the U.S. Department of Education to “demonstrate leniency” toward Corinthian Colleges by permitting the wealthy for-profit company to continue accessing millions of dollars in federal financial aid while it was cooperating with a federal investigation.
Ten months later, the company shuttered its remaining 28 campuses, instantly displacing some 16,000 students just days after it was fined $30 million by the Department of Education for a scheme involving “confirmed cases of misrepresentation of job placement rates” for as many as 947 students. The decision to close shop came after years of federal and state investigations into the company.
The top-tier Republican presidential candidate had made his plea in a letter—obtained by Bloomberg Politics—dated June 20, 2014 and addressed to Jim Shelton, the deputy secretary of education, and Ted Mitchell, the undersecretary for post-secondary education.

The US got a default judgment against them yesterday. Rubio took 27,000 in donations last year.
