My personal scoring system, by the way, is that when the nth person drops out, you get “n times how far off you were for that candidate” points. You win by getting the fewest points possible.
So far, then, I have only one point.

the problem is most of these people are dead but kept on life support by sunday talk shows.
If you live in or near DC or NYC then you don’t have campaign around the country, running up bills. You just get out of bed and drive to the local national studio and pretend to be running.
They’re dead. But like Terry Schiavo the media doesn’t want to pull the plug.

Since I could not care less about the Republicans, I’ll make a comment for the Hamilmaniacs instead: in case you missed it, Leslie Odom Jr (aka Aaron Burr) was on Seth Meyers’ show last night. I have it on the DVR at home, so no spoilers!
Tommy
@Omnes Omnibus: You and me both. About the only thing I have been right about, even close to right about, was that once Trump was in the lead and that started to change, he’d call voters “stupid.” But not so sure I was going out on the limb on that one.
Just an aside about Jindal.
My father and I have a lot of connections to LSU and friends that teach there. Not what you’d call super liberal, but not remotely mouth-breathing Republicans either. After Katrina hit they all told us they felt he was about the only “adult” in the state in an elected office. Impressed by him even if they didn’t vote for him.
To a large extent why he became governor.
And he did somewhat well at first. Even the “inside the beltway” crowd thought he was the “adult in the room” of the Republican party for like 5 seconds.
Not followed him closely, but then he went off the rails almost overnight. Best I can tell he knew he wanted to run for President and he started to try to appeal to the far right, not only in what he said but the agenda he supported in Louisiana.
Louisiana is always like 49 or 50 in the categories you don’t want to be 49 or 50, but Jindal has cemented LA will be there, no matter what the next governor does, for another generation. For a state I love more than the state I live and was born in, that pains me!!!!!!!

Now Jindal is going to spend his time helping out Vitter’s campaign. Great news for Vitter-NOT.

@trollhattan: What I find interesting is an Edwards might be beat Vitter. When I first heard the name I ran to Wikipedia and said no, no, no, not the son or realtive of the Edwin Edwards my mom used to type memos for to put my father through LSU (I was a fetus at the time) or the same Edwards when I was there in school many years later.
NOT the same Edwards family name. I breathed a huge sigh of relief!
But with so many low information voters I wonder if the race gets tight towards the end, and they always seem to, this might be the 1 to 1.5% percent Vitter needs to win? Just wondering outloud.

Graham was on All Things Considered this afternoon. Also too, from my understanding, there is no love lost between Jindal and Vitter and Obama has a higher (not positive, but higher) approval rating than Jindal has in Louisiana. So Vitter don’t need Jindal…it’s more likely to work against him.
The sad fact is, John Bel Edwards is doing as best as anyone can in taking it to Vitter, and yet Vitter still has a chance to win this shit. Cause when those folks are in the booths, they more often than not will vote based on ideology.

Not unless you mouse over, and notice that it doesn’t turn red.
It’s a pretty common standard on the Web that text in some saturated color, usually blue or purple, indicates a link. It’s very unusual to use the same color for bold text as well, and it’s confusing.
I honestly didn’t notice until someone pointed it out above that there even is a visible difference between links and bold text: you have to remember the distinction between blue bold text and blue not-bold text, which is definitely not usually an important one.

White Americans long for the 1950s, when they didn’t face so much discrimination

Yes, you read that headline correctly.
In a new poll released by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) on Tuesday, a whopping 43 percent of Americans told researchers that discrimination against whites has become as large a problem as discrimination against blacks and other minority groups. And an even bigger share of Americans — 53 percent — told pollsters American culture and “way of life” have mostly changed for the worse since 1950.

FIRST LOOK: “THE WIZ LIVE!”
Posted on November 17, 2015
“NBC embarks on its latest musical holiday tradition: a three-hour LIVE event production of the groundbreaking Broadway show that brought Oz to life in a funky sing-along journey down the yellow brick road.
“The Wiz Live!” is adapted from “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, with a book by William F. Brown, and music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls. The production opened on Broadway in 1975 at the Majestic Theatre and won seven Tonys, including Best Musical. The original massive Broadway hit spawned a feature film starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. Now, an award-winning creative team, the imaginative Cirque du Soleil Theatrical and a diverse cast of showstoppers create an eye-popping new take unlike anything ever seen.

There are still things that demonstrably do not work, but I’ve been restraining myself from commenting until we get to some official end point where the rebuild is declared finished, on the (repeated) assurance that “we’re reading all your concerns and we’re going to take care of them.”
Has the “new” commenting system even been launched yet?

@Tommy: I’m the last one who would encourage anybody to leave, well except for a couple who got the boot (perhaps before your time, though you may remember Caligula).
However, I take exception, vehemently, to your assertions that you’ve been abused because you’ve received some criticism of graphic design choices (including me) and reports of less than pleasing user experience (also including me). It’s offensive. Commenters here are users of the site, and the idea of site design is to have good user experiences.
In addition, apologies to my beloved raven, your behavior when you “lost your cool” is completely unacceptable. You fucking threatened users of this site, that while you were in “god mode” you could make their lives difficult both here and elsewhere. You “would never, ever do it ,of course, but you could.” That. is. a. threat. I don’t especially worry about doxxing, but the havoc that could be created with knowledge of an IP is considerable. I wonder, every time I post here now, if I should be doing so with a proxy. Thanks, man.
As a recipient of that threat, I remain extremely offended that a suggestion that you might wish to apologize was “not gonna happen,” or words to that effect. I recognize that many people disagree with me, but your loss of cool was so far over the line that it was hard to believe you didn’t have a time out.
I don’t think you should leave, but you should know that I never open this site comfortably now that I know you have access to my IP, and how angrily you react to any critique. Perhaps I will need to use a proxy.

I think the reason we’re divided into two camps is Apple vs Android, unfortunately. On my iDevices, I have a few minor annoyances that quickly clear up with reloading. It sounds like that is not the case on Android devices?

@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q):
FWIW, several of us have strongly advised Tommy that at some point he needs to make a calm, well-thought out apology for that meltdown, on the front page, preferably read and approved by someone more cool-headed before it posts. Not sure if we’ve gotten through, though.
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
@Omnes Omnibus: I thought I was being polite. But I stand by my objections to behavior, unpopular as I know they are in some quarters. The Other Chuck’s code (thank you thank you thank you) makes the site readable, but no less in need of caution to visit. And that pisses me off. But, I recognize that you can’t bitch much about a free site.

@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q):
What should be clear is that he did not actually “lose his cool”. He wasn’t taunted or angered into making the God Mode statement, or talking about commenters who he considered trolled him 24/7. That’s just who he is.

@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): I can say that I know at least one respected commenter who is uncomfortable about coming back while Tommy has a set of keys. I think the blog would be a smaller place without that commenter’s POV.

@Mnemosyne (tablet):
I’m not seeing an “Apple vs. Android” thing. It’s just that various (sometimes different) things are not working in the several environments.
There are things that don’t work, at least for me, in the Windows environment (with Firefox), but a lot of the problems do seem to crop up with the desktop site and Android. For example, on my tablet (Nexus 7) the desktop version of Balloon Juice comes up, but there are no pop-out navigation “wings” to go to the next or previous post. And, since the designers removed the hard-coded links to same that existed before, now the only way to get to a new post—or even see that there is one—is to exit to the Balloon Juice main page (or open it in a new tab) and proceed from there. This seems like a pretty big thing, not a “some people are never satisfied” quibble.
As I have mentioned, my Android phone appears to be using the old mobile version of the site, and it works the way it did before November 1—not stellar but okay. (Big beefs: no comment numbers; any refresh takes you back to the top of the post; various weirdnesses with replying and editing replies.)

@Betty Cracker: It was November 6 or 7. I can’t search the new site well enough to find the specifics for you. I internet wrong.

@Steeplejack: The reason I lost my other comments was because I had wiped the cache on this Kindle and forgot I needed to reenter my info to post one, and then it didn’t fix the problem anyway. This site opens on both Kindles to old posts, and I have to scroll through a day’s worth to get to the current one. And refreshing always takes me to the top, not back to where I was. And this is the only site where that happens. But whatever. I also am waiting for the new full length move on the redesign. Drama aplenty behind the scenes I bet.

@Corner Stone: I’m chary of visiting without a proxy, but, I’m nothing if not one with more guts than brains. As someone who’s gotten in the face of a few people who’d actually killed other people, a couple of whom when I was not in the defense business. But I know I should be more cautious in this situation because I can’t see trouble coming, and once it does, real damage could be done.

@Steeplejack:
I’m using the “regular” site on my iPad and I get the cool “wings” that let me go from post to post. It’s also a reasonably normal size down the center and I can pinch to increase the font size. I’m also getting the cool pop-up video and picture links and numbered comments. I have very few complaints on the iPad. Same story on my (Mac) laptop.
It’s more of a mess on the iPhone, so I’m still using the old mobile site. I did have a new mobile site briefly appear that had comment numbers and other bells and whistles, but it disappeared after a refresh.
So I do think a lot of the problems people are reporting are platform-specific at this point, but unfortunately most people only have one platform so it’s hard to pinpoint the problems.

Yep. Just did my search-fu, and those are the exact two comments I would start with.

@Steeplejack: In this particular case, it appears that no one either takes it seriously or cares. For the record and the kibitzers, I wasn’t a part of the original conversation that lead to the threats.

@Mnemosyne (tablet):
That actually makes the problems easier to run down, because they’re more specific. The developers should have—and check the site features on—at least one device for each “environment.” What I think is part of the (root) problem is that they didn’t do this, or did it somewhat casually. I remember a commenter making a remark about how the new site looked on a cell phone, and one of the designers replied with a comment about how that was good feedback because he hadn’t seen that before. WTF. Same thing with the “no navigation wings.”
ETA: And I’m not saying every possible permutation of every environment. I’m saying Mac/desktop, iPad/desktop, phone/Android, tablet/Android, Windows/desktop/Chrome, Windows/desktop/Firefox, Windows/desktop/I.E. Maybe a few others.

@Mnemosyne (tablet):
he apologized. tough shit if that’s not enough for you.
Satby
@tybee: normally the apology is TO the specific people involved and takes responsibility for that person’s part without weaselling about being provoked. Not a general “yeah, things got out of hand” statement. He made the threat specifically to people, I was clearly one of them, and he has not apologized really.

I have to agree with fixing “Dontate” – misspellings make me sad. And blue for bold is just wrong. But if Cole told you to make bold blue, maybe you should just say, “You guys are bitching to the wrong guy. I do what my client says, that’s how I get paid!”
Otherwise, personal criticism of your style, just let that roll off you back. None of their business how many times you tell us you went to LSU! What your parents did, etc.
In my family, we were way more likely to talk about Poltics, Religion and Sex than anything else. This is part of why I’m happy to slam stupid politics here and anywhere else, family tradition. My branch of the family was mostly R, of course that wasn’t as clearly stupid in the 50s and 60s. Wasn’t as treasonous as it is today.
We were very unlikely to talk about money. I never knew what my folks had in the way of salary and equity until they were retired for years, and were anticipating that we would inherit what they didn’t spend on travel. They loved to travel, and I do to.
But you talk about what you want to talk about. People slamming you for the site, I think many of those people need to reload their OS and software tools. I see them fuss about stuff I have literally never seen, and I’m on this site several hours a day, late at night, after dinner.
Chrome may be 90% of what is wrong with their experience. Firefox is the standard browser and has been for years.
People slamming you for what you post about on open thread, you should just be out of fucks to give! None of their business!!!
Keep up your end of the conversation, and all is good. See you at 3 am some night! My best to you this morning.

Pictures, great photos, of little kids, not in camps, just sleeping on streets and fields.
That is so tragic. I can’t stand to go all the way down that list of photos, I can’t see through my tears. And this is what the Republicans want us to fear! What brave big adults they are, those lying scumbags! Hate them with the flaming heat of a sun!
If I really believed they were afraid, I would feel bad for them. But I know that they are saying things they don’t really believe to instill fear in their constituents, us, just as the terrorists want them to! In a just world, those guys fomenting fear by lying would be in cells down the hall from the terrorists using bombs and guns…

I started a pool for this at work with about 8 coworkers. Very interesting to see the thought process from people on both sides of the isle and some that are not super politically interested. As of now I am winning, but I mistakenly put Cruz way too early and will suffer for that.
