Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Tick tock motherfuckers!

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Come on, man.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

In my day, never was longer.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

This Fucking Guy

This post is in: Activist Judges!, Gay Rights are Human Rights, Assholes

FacebookTweetEmail

Remember, before you read this, it is 2015:

Speaking at Georgetown University Law School Monday, Scalia said the Constitution guaranteed only religious and political protections, The New York Times reported, and that it was not up to judges to determine which other minority groups deserved legal protections.

“What minorities deserve protection?” he said rhetorically. “What? It’s up to me to identify deserving minorities?”

“What about pederasts?” he asked. “What about child abusers?”

“This is a deserving minority,” he went on, jokingly. “Nobody loves them.”

The number one reason I will crawl over broken glass to vote for a Democrat in 2016.

    Just the Italian Catholic ones.

I grew up in a predominantly Catholic city at a time when there was still lingering anti-Catholic feelings in much of the country. This was pre-1960 pre-JFK. It stuns me that someone old enough to remember those days could be such an inflamed asshole.

    Some miscellaneous governmental arglebargle:

So tonight, I was at a meeting of the Scottsdale City Council, because the building and site plan I’ve designed had to go before the Council for approval. We got it. Okay.

So I do not actually live in Scottsdale, for many reasons, first and foremost because it is full of the kind of people I hate. So I get to the meeting early, and meet up with my client and project team. A rando comes up to us and starts bitching about a proposed anti-LGBT-discrimination ordinance being discussed that night. As I am there in my professional capacity, and I am not a resident/voter, I would not engage this asshole. All of my clients were annoyed by the douche, and he kept hassling them, even though it was clear that they didn’t agree with him, and we were not there to speak on that issue. He kept saying that “being gay isn’t measurable!”.

Then they started the meeting with a prayer. Yaaaaay.

Then a bunch of people, including the wonderful UU minister of a congregation I sometimes attend, spoke in favor of the ordinance. Then a bigot pastor warned against how good Christians would be forced to violate their freedoms by taking pictures of gay weddings.

Then I had to listen to more complaining about my project from this resident jackass who is scared to people with mental illness, even though he bought a house a block away from a psychiatric hospital that has been there for 35 years.

While it’s great to cite our long tradition of providing refuge, and how many Americans are descended from refugees, I suspect those arguments fall into the usual liberal category of “if we just explain clearly enough, surely they’ll understand.” Even more so with the argument that turning this into a war against Muslims is counterproductive and exactly what Daesh wants.

For actually fighting back, I think a better argument is:

“You’re a bunch of bedwetting cowards who have been terrorized into doing exactly what the terrorist want. Congratulations, you must be so proud!”

    @BR:

    Yes, it’s a known problem.

Also, it is always helpful when reporting problems to note your platform (device, OS, browser).

    @Mnemosyne (tablet):

it’s hard work to look at the facts

Appellate judges, as a general rule, aren’t supposed to weigh evidence and determine facts. They can look at the trial court’s findings of fact in light of the record, but the standard of review, “clearly erroneous,” is pretty deferential.

    @efgoldman:

The “not a dime’s worth of difference” people, and the “not the candidate I wanted” people, and the “s/he’s not exactly what I want, and may have done something I didn’t like” people, are ignorant, don’t live in the real world, and deserve what happens to them.

Have you figured out a way for “them” to get what “they” have coming without us being collateral damage?

If there was ever a photo where that most excellent German word backpfeifengesicht leaps to the forefront of my mind, this is it. I like the translation “a face that cries out for a fist” best in this context.

My dad molested my sister. He attempted to molest me. He was not gay. In my lifetime, I estimate that about 40 percent of the women I have been acquainted with have the same story to tell. I believe that all of those heterosexual men have proven themselves to be pedophiles. And, I personally suspect Scalia to have bothered a few very young women himself. He is holier than thou just like my dad.

The number one reason I will crawl over broken glass to vote for a Democrat in 2016.

And while you’re crawling over broken glass to vote, millions of Democrats will be just too busy to bother.

I don’t know whether it’s easier to hate Republicans or to be disgusted with those Democrats.

I swear, having followed Scalia’s public statements for quite some time, that as he has gotten older, he has gotten more reactionary and much more of an outspoken wingnut.

Thomas, OTOH, was always a turnip. And Alito came out of his mother’s womb wishing he’d been born in 1450 instead of 1950.

@Schlemazel: Oh, it’s okay. He started off with saying he can be protected by creed.

And in that other case, he presumed to judge which creeds were valid and which were not. (Hobby Lobby, I think.)

If somehow Baud! doesn’t get the nomination, Clinton will likely appoint him to replace one of the two.

Why not both of them (, Katie)? Baud! has enough is easily more rational than any three of the RWNJ Justices put together.

If the Obama campaign in late 2007 and early 2008 didn’t excite you, then you probably have no soul. Or are a hardcore Naderite.

Is being a Naderite a bad thing? I think his long-term “plan” has benefited unmeasurably.

You know which plan I Mean, of course: the one where “things will get so bad under a Bush Administration, that a new generation of liberalism will result.” (Can I use quotation marks around a paraphrased statement?) I think it’s worked out surprisingly well, don’t you?

Self-proclaimed “Constitutional Originalist” doesn’t seem to have bothered to read the Federalist Papers. If he had, he would understand that the system of Separation of Powers that was designed by our Founders and enshrined in the Constitution was precisely for the purpose of protecting our democracy from the “tyranny of the majority”. In particular, I would refer him to Federalist No. 10.

The fact that this is the type of stuff that a high school student would be expected to learn in AP Government, but that this justice of the US Supreme Court seems not to know or understand is truly frightening.
