Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Everybody saw this coming.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

White supremacy is terrorism.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Not all heroes wear capes.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

In my day, never was longer.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Let there be snark.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

David Daleiden Had No Idea His Rhetoric Was Loaded!

The Breitbrats circle the wagons:

There is little doubt that David Daleiden is nervous that Planned Parenthood will blame Friday’s shooting at a Colorado Springs abortion clinic on him and his videos…

In a statement to Breitbart News, he flatly stated, “The Center for Medical Progress does not support vigilante violence against abortion providers. There are people at Planned Parenthood who I still consider friends and my thoughts and prayers are with them at this time for no one to be injured.”

In response to the inevitable charges against him, Daleiden said, “We only visited the Denver clinic in Colorado. PPRM CEO Vicki Cowart says Planned Parenthood still doesn’t know the full details of what is going on in Colorado Springs.”…

They include a laundry list of other anti-choice activists, every one of them shocked — shocked! — that their well-compensated efforts to prevent women from controlling their own bodies might cruelly be connected to some Angry Armed White Man deciding to act on the charges they sling so wildly.

I’ve been holding on to a Washington Post profile of Daleiden, cheerily titled “Meet the millennial who infiltrated the guarded world of abortion providers“:

… Daleiden developed an elaborate ruse. He posed as Robert Daoud Sarkis, an employee of Biomax Procurement Services LLC, a fake company he concocted to serve as a front for the operation. He registered the company with the California secretary of state, set up a mock Web site and even created Facebook pages for his fake employees.

According to a lawsuit later filed by the National Abortion Federation, the company chief executive’s “likes” included Hillary Rodham Clinton, “The Rachel Maddow Show” and stem cell research.

With $120,000 raised from about 20 donors, whom Daleiden refuses to name, Daleiden spent nearly 30 months living his Sarkis persona. He and six paid actors visited clinics in Texas and Colorado; attended Planned Parenthood and National Abortion Federation conferences, signing nondisclosure agreements he would later disregard; and lunched with top Planned Parenthood officials. Daleiden even managed to speak briefly, camera running, with Richards, the group’s president…

Money… is pouring in for Daleiden, though he will say only that the Center for Medical Progress has managed to recoup its costs.

Daleiden often says he likes the abortion providers he met. He calls Deborah Nucatola, the Planned Parenthood medical director whose casual comments about abortion procedures were his first big get, a “friend.” (It is unlikely she feels any reciprocal warmth, considering that the National Abortion Federation says she has been the subject of online death threats. Nucatola declined to comment through a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman.)…

Look, he’s just a careerist, a young entrepreneur turning his passion into a much nicer, more exciting gig than some minimum-wage retail slog or a series of dubious internships! Didn’t his teachers tell him to follow his dreams? Right Wing Watch, back in October:

As we explored in our recent report on the Center for Medical Progress’ attacks on Planned Parenthood, CMP founder David Daleiden worked in concert with a few longtime anti-choice activists in his effort to claim that Planned Parenthood violated federal laws with its fetal tissue donation program. One of those activists was Mark Crutcher, who through his Texas-based group Life Dynamics, conducted a very similar undercover video “sting” of fetal tissue donation practices in the late 1990s, with a similar goal of undermining legal abortion.

Crutcher’s claims fell apart when his key witness admitted at a congressional hearing that he had lied about witnessing “profiteering by fetal-tissue providers.”…

In an in-depth interview with the “Catholic Answers Focus” podcast last week, Daleiden recalled that in 2010 he had a “very detailed” three-hour conversation with Crutcher about this failed sting operation, from which he came away determined to copy Crutcher’s actions, only this time he would be better prepared to confront the “enemy” of Planned Parenthood…

He added that as well as learning about “the best tactics of the enemy,” he decided to focus on Planned Parenthood “so that nobody could deny that this was a Planned Parenthood problem and so Planned Parenthood would have to be held to account for their actions.”…

Six states have so far closed investigations into Daleiden’s claims, finding no wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood…

I second Mr. TBogg:

… When interviewed, Daleiden carefully parsed his words and flagrantly misinterpreted the words of the people caught on tape, thereby filling his nothing-burger of an exposé — for which he received a nice budget that allowed him to work on the project for two years — with red meat for the anti-choice crowd.

On a certain level — with the aid of the media which uncritically ran with his narrative — Daleiden was more than modestly successful. Republican lawmakers in conservative states were able to cut some funding for Planned Parenthood, while GOP presidential candidates had yet something else to grandstand about in order to woo the evangelical base.

With so much heat thrown off by Daleiden’s anti-abortion project, it is no surprise — and it absolutely cannot be to him — that someone somewhere would take his lies to the extreme and try and do something about it. With extreme prejudice…

…[I]t appears that Robert Lewis Dear shot up a Planned Parenthood because he was familiar with David Daleiden’s videotape lies. This is not to say that this is something that Daleiden was hoping for. But when Daleiden published his videos with great fanfare, he primed more than a few future domestic terrorists to take the law — God’s or their own — into their own hands.

David Dalieden didn’t pull the trigger — he just showed Robert Lewis Dear where he needed to aim the gun.

"Do we have to call this a domestic terrorist attack?" – Chuck Todd

Daleiden was on Glenn Beck a couple months ago and his demeanor was a whole lot different.

“And while I was speaking with her, she wasn’t suspicious of my character,” Daleiden described. “Everything, everything was going well. We were talking and kind of joking and laughing about something. And all of a sudden she looked straight in my eyes, and I saw almost like a flash of light run from one side of her eyes to another. Kind of like when the sun is flashing in a car, like driving on the freeway. And a flash from one side to the other, and all of a sudden, her eyes looked really hard and mean and aggressive.

“And for the first time during this entire project, I felt really afraid, like an actual fear, a fight-or-flight kind of response. I felt very exposed, like she knew everything about me. And then all of a sudden … back to laughing and joking, totally casual, normal. And I talked about that with several people afterwards, and some people have kind of a spiritual interpretation, and others have a more psychological interpretation. But on some level, we feel like that was the predator look or the predator instinct that you see in someone who is accustomed to killing people. This is a late-term abortion doctor who has terminated many, many, many big babies over the years,” he said.

He concluded, “That was probably the most significant moment that I had kind of early on encountering, as you said, the evil that we were going to be directly in contact.”

When someone has to lie in order to bolster their position, or to persuade others to their position, they have, by definition, already lost the argument. And if you are pro-life, you don’t go around killing people who are providing pap smears and mammograms.

These guys are smart, you have to give them that–or at least wily. They know that unless one of their own people goes off the rails and shoots up one of these places, they’re off the hook. “Oh, dear me, oh, how awful, we never meant for anybody to do anything like this, oh, no!” They scream about holocausts and nazis and butchering helpless babies for years and then when somebody takes their words to mean what anybody can see what they mean, all of a sudden, everything they ever said was allegory or something. But serious people buy it, and they know they buy it, and until the serious people wake the fuck up and stop buying it, this shit is going to go on going on.

And forty years ago we thought Tricksie Dicksie Nixie and his minions were ratfuckers.

They sorta were, but as much as I hated Nixon, I feel somewhat more compassion for him than for Daleiden. I look at it as Nixon was just trying to get back at the (nebulous) elites who he felt had wronged him because he was poor (or some such). Daleiden’s motivations were/are, to my mind, much worse

In a frantic effort to pin blame on the Planned Parenthood terror attack on Friday on anyone but the anti-choice right, Sen. The major omission in the piece is the crucial connection between Deleiden’s fraud and Dear’s murder — namely, Carly Fiorina. If GOP candidates don’t run with Deleiden’s fallacies, none of the rest occurs.

I’m with y’all on the notion that Daleiden is scum, yet I can’t help but note the irony of those of you hoping out loud that *someone* visits great bodily harm on him. In the off chance that *someone* takes you seriously enough to inflict injury or murder Daleiden, would you not be ultimately culpable under your own rhetoric? I suppose one might argue that his trespasses are so epic as to warrant such a violent outcome, but that’s exactly what the pro-unborn-life crowd argues when advocating death to “baby-murderers.” Addressing self-righteous violence with more self-righteous violence tends to make matters worse, not better. We should be capable of strongly condemning this idiot without being dragged down to his level.
