The Full Donald

This post is in: The Brown Enemy Within

FacebookTweetEmail

Here we go:

Donald Trump, the leading contender to become the Republican party’s nominee for US presidential candidate, has called for a “total and complete shutdown” of the country’s borders to Muslims in the wake of the San Bernardino terrorist attack.
[…] Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said Trump’s proposed ban would apply to “everybody”, including Muslims seeking immigration visas as well as tourists seeking to enter the country.

The obvious next question concerns the Muslims still in the country. Perhaps there’s some kind of facility where they could be housed in the interim?

Trump needs to double down on the hate after being called out as a coward by the PotUS last night. The 27% will gobble this up and the media will tut tut the “divisiveness of politics”, but there will be no pushback. I keep expecting to see a new black shirt arise in this country, maybe wearing trucker hats to “Make America Great Again”?

@Southern Beale: Well, once you get the public on board with banning Muslim immigrants, you can then trail-balloon internment camps for the Muslims that are here, and then right onto the boxcars.

    That why the poem works:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

It warns of a gentle escalation from one group to the next, with each step concentrating support into a smaller and smaller population who is increasingly protected from future actions. That’s exactly how the GOP designs their strategies – from restricting voting rights to reducing political power of certain groups. Each success makes the next success slightly more likely because those who retained power were unaffected and are more likely to support the next restriction of rights.

    @SiubhanDuinne: Agreed.

Friend of mine from law school is a Pakistani-American born in the good ole U.S.A. Grew up in one of the Mountain States. Highly devout Muslim. (I’m being vague here out of paranoia as he has worked a semi-high profile job in DC in the past.) Parents are small business owners, owning multiple business – immigrant success stories.

He’s a former national defense Republican (much like our blog host, the Bush years disgusted him and he’s now an Obama fan.) Earned a highly prestigious Truman scholarship to pay for grad school. Served with a prestigious NGO in DC working on international conflict resolution and rule of law. Spent a couple years in Afghanistan in Kabul working to help the Afghani government try to establish a modernized legal system. Advised NATO on various legal issues involving the intersection of U.S., international and Islamic law. Current fellow with a public university law school, focusing on U.S.-Islamic comparative law.

As a good Muslim, has been to Mecca for the Hajj. Always fasts during Ramadan and complains how hungry he is for a peanut butter sandwich on Facebook for moral support from friends. His views on Islam could probably be described as 180 degrees opposite of whatever the fundamentalist clerics are preaching. He is also a Denver Broncos fan but I forgive him for that.

He recently had to attend the funeral of a relative who passed away at age 20. While at the funeral at the cemetery, a some white rednecks drove by in a pickup truck, shouted “F&ck you rag heads!” and then shot their guns in the air.

I know who the loyal Americans are. And who aren’t.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney blasted Donald Trump’s Monday call for a “total and complete shutdown” of all Muslims from entering the U.S., saying it goes against the foundation of religious freedom.

Appearing on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,” Cheney argued that the proposal “goes against everything we stand for and believe in,” adding that his comments follow a “mistaken notion.”

“I think this whole notion that somehow we can just say no more Muslims, just ban a whole religion goes against everything we stand for and believe in,” Cheney told Hewitt. “I mean, religious freedom’s been a very important part of our history and where we came from.”

Appearing on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,” Cheney argued that the proposal “goes against everything we stand for and believe in,” adding that his comments follow a “mistaken notion.”

Oh, I get it. Cheney doesn’t want to ban all muslims from entering the United States. He just wants to assassinate them while they’re abroad.

“Right now, today, there was a story in the New York Times that if you read it carefully mentioned something known as the Joint Special Operations Command — JSOC it’s called. It is a special wing of our special operations community that is set up independently. They do not report to anybody, except in the Bush-Cheney days, they reported directly to the Cheney office. They did not report to the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff or to Mr. [Robert] Gates, the secretary of defense. They reported directly to him. …

“Congress has no oversight of it. It’s an executive assassination ring essentially, and it’s been going on and on and on. Just today in the Times there was a story that its leaders, a three star admiral named [William H.] McRaven, ordered a stop to it because there were so many collateral deaths.

Source: Seymour Hersh interview in March, 2009. The New York Times article is innocously titled “U.S. Halted Some Raids in Afghanistan.”

@Gin & Tonic: Yeah, I’m not sure I agree. Germany’s arch conservative judiciary made a decision to rubberstamp the treatment of Jews under the regime early on, and that decision emboldened the Nazis. Without the judiciary, perhaps the invasion and Einsatzgruppen would have gone along as planned but the ethnic cleansing inside Germany would have ground to a halt. In fact, there were times in Germany even very late where certain actions were stopped by angry citizens. Niemoller wasn’t pissing in the wind. There were a lot of break points.
