Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you are in line to indict donald trump, stay in line.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

I’m just a talker, trying to find a channel!

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

In my day, never was longer.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

So many bastards, so little time.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

T R E 4 5 O N

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

It’s a doggy dog world.

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

The frogs are rarely mistaken.

I was confident that someone would point it out and thought why not me.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself. We’re allowed to grow past that.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

…and a burning sense of injustice to juice the soul.

And, of course, at this point the only vaguely plausible “Establishment” candidate is Rubio. Who has pretty much the same set of cockamamie policy beliefs as Cruz, he’s just better at hiding them and cloaking them in seemingly-inoccuous language.

@dmsilev: And more important to the establishment, Rubio’s “beliefs” are whatever works at the moment to get elected, and he’s much more likely to go along with the establishment program if elected (based on his having espoused sincerely held beliefs at both ends of the GOP spectrum on immigration.)

I don’t think Cruz’ beliefs are any more sincere, but Rubio seems to believe whatever is best for him, whereas Cruz goes for whatever is best for him at the expense of everyone else.

Cruz is a dangerous, power hungry psychotic; Rubio is a bush the shrub twin (maybe even more stupid if that is believable) and would be a complete tool for neocons and teabaggers; bush the so-called smarter is an utter tool of big business; chump is a power seeking actor who would rubber stamp much of the thug congress passes; and all the rest are clowns with issues too big to get near the steering wheel of the clown bus. The worse past is this really is the best the thug party has to offer and far more sane then much of their voter base – talk about scary! Where are the Goth’s when you need them … lest Darkness does Fall … .

I have a theory about why Ted Cruz is so unattractive– he’s a bad actor. And I mean that in the sense of ‘acting’ as a sort of skill. He has to put on an act– as many politicians do– and he’s very, very bad at it.

And that must really frustrate him. He’s so smart, after all– and actors as a group have the reputation of not being the sharpest tools in the drawer– but he just can’t do it right. He memorizes his lines, he gets every little gesture down pat, but it still looks fake. The difference between good acting and bad acting is microscopic, but everyone sees it immediately.

To take a specific example, Tilda Swinton is, to put it gently, an airhead. But her performance in, e.g., Michael Clayton was amazing and hypnotic. How did she do it? Cruz will never understand that, or approach that– not ever.

And there’s also the silly passage in one of the Gospels–Matthew?–where the dead in Jerusalem rise from their graves and go berserking after Jesus dies.

@MattF: I think that comes from his debate training. I have said before that whenever he’s speaking you can practically see him counting the beats for each carefully chosen pause.

The thing about Cruz is that it’s easily evident that he thinks everyone else in the world is inferior to him. That’s why his demagoguery is so hollow. You can tell he thinks everyone listening to him is a peon waiting to be manipulated. I think Trump is a megalomaniac who craves everyone’s approval. Cruz is an unloved, loveless sociopath who sees “people” as a means to amass overwhelming power.

Speaking of “Establishment Rubio”, it’s worth a gander to click on Vox on our blogroll. Interesting recent article entitled “Marco Rubio’s strategy is utterly baffling”. @Baud: Every astronaut who ever flew in space “fell off the Earth” while in orbit …(they are in continuous “free fall”. ) As for explaining gravity – try explaining light or anything microscopic in general, really. It all requires a common agreed upon “accept this” and then all else follows … mostly. Gravity as curved space makes sense as long as you ignore what is curved like one ignores what “waves” in light and exactly what makes mass … well, mass. Or what is a vacuum or what is time or its direction. All concepts break down as you look at the details – that is what makes quantum mechanics really a powerful concept unlike all previous theory’s – it avoids many unexplainable aspects of reality while clarifying most microscopic objects.

Does anybody here watch James Corden? I am a big fan and think his show is 10x better than Colbert’s.

    @MattF:

I have a theory about why Ted Cruz is so unattractive– he’s a bad actor. And I mean that in the sense of ‘acting’ as a sort of skill. He has to put on an act– as many politicians do– and he’s very, very bad at it.

    He oozes creepy.
