Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Donald Trump, welcome to your everything, everywhere, all at once.

This really is a full service blog.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

I’m more Christian than these people and I’m an atheist.

Maybe you would prefer that we take Joelle’s side in ALL CAPS?

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

This blog will pay for itself.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

I desperately hope that, yet again, I am wrong.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Optimism opens the door to great things.

This country desperately needs a functioning Fourth Estate.

We’re Back … And The World’s Still Terrible

Last night’s GOP debate was a lot of fearmongering talk about ISIS. Let’s also not forget Ted Cruz’s love of the word “carpet bombing,” Ben Carson’s need for boots on the ground, and Trump making bold statements about not only representing the Republican party as opposed to running independently and his call to ban Muslims from entering the US.

Team Blackness had a lot of words–some fueled by whiskey–about the debate, the Planned Parenthood attacks, Daniel Holtzclaw’s conviction and other news that has happened in the last month while we’ve all been moving.

there’s been a distinct dearth of a certain style of ranting in my life. Ah, good.

Also, go figure. Mr. Affluenza seems to have gone AWOL. Mumsie too.

“Dr.” “Ben” is all for boots on the ground, as long as they’re not his.

And as was pointed out at length in the NYTimes, Cruz doesn’t have the slightest idea what the term “carpet bombing” actually means.

Students chant ’16 shots’ at Emanuel’s Urban Prep event

WRITTEN BY FRAN SPIELMAN POSTED: 12/16/2015, 10:29AM

A normally friendly forum for Mayor Rahm Emanuel turned hostile Wednesday when student protesters chanting, “16 shots,” interrupted a ceremony called to jump-start a “citywide strategy” aimed at providing expanded opportunities for “every child and young man of color” in Chicago.

Emanuel announced creation of a “My Brother’s Keeper Cabinet” at Urban Prep Academies, 6201 S. Stewart. It’s a charter school that boasts of sending 100 percent of its African-American male graduates to college.

‘STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS’ REVIEW: THE THRILLS ARE STRONG WITH THIS ONE RICHARD ROEPER on December 16, 2015

    It’s a return to greatness.

Nearly 40 years after “Star Wars” exploded the pop culture universe and practically became a religion for generations of fans, and a full decade after many of those same fans felt betrayed and defeated by “Revenge of the Sith,” the seventh “Star Wars” movie could well bear the same subtitle as the original:

    “A New Hope.”

What a beautiful, thrilling, joyous, surprising and heart-thumping adventure this is. “The Force Awakens” pops with memorable battle sequences, gives us chills with encore appearances by stars from the original trilogy and introduces more than a half-dozen terrific Next Generation characters.

If the U.S. presidential election were held this weekend, director-producer-co-writer J.J. Abrams might carry the day based on geek support alone.

“The Force Awakens” is set about 30 years after the events of “Return of the Jedi.” Of course Abrams begins with the familiar blue text telling us this all takes place “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” and then we get the iconic yellow crawl text giving us some basic backstory and letting us know where we are now.

And then boom! We’re off and running. (More often, flying and soaring and zigging and zagging.)

OK, the Balloon Juice seems to be seriously broken right now. I keep getting “yoursite.com” when I click on my Balloon Juice bookmark.

And, just like that, it seems to be fixed.

It’s fixed – Brief hiccup from typo and then worse mis-paste due to panic from the original typo.

Anyway, SSL should be enabled and forced for all.

Mistrial in the Freddie Gray cop case.

@SiubhanDuinne: Hmmm….reason for mistrial? When I was on jury duty, I sat in a case of food stamp fraud. Somehow, some very damaging information got slipped into the pile of evidence that had been admitted by the court and it was skewing the jury something fierce against the defendant. So the judge had no choice but to declare a mistrial.

Looks like another site issue here: in the previous version of this site, Elon’s pieces posted in triplicate.

I’m not an IT person, but I’m guessing this might be a tricky issue to fix…good luck!
