@rikyrah: So true. I love Christmas carols but not when they start playing them in stores from Halloween.

@rikyrah:
I think that’s part of it. There are only, what, 65-70 real songs (lets leave crap like Walkin In My Winter Underwear and Granma Got Run Over By A Reindeer out of this) and there is not much difference between the singers and their versions (lets ignore the horrific PTSD inducing Springsteen thing). Really more than a couple of days of that spoil the lovely stuff.
Non Christmas music for those tired of it. Malhari from Bajirao Mastani, this song annoyed the killjoys in India which included Bajirao’s descendants, who called it ahistoric (which it is, but nevertheless enjoyable). Its a commercial movie not a PhD thesis for crying out loud.
@efgoldman: tomorrow. Usually there was a Noche Buena put on by friends of the family on Christmas Eve. This is my Dad’s long time research collaborator and his wife, who was my Mom’s long time speech language pathology partner. But they’ve been sick this past year, and while I’m sure their kids are doing a Noche Buena, its likely very small and just for family.
I’ll get Chinese tomorrow. I already have a post on it cued up (not so subtle notice to the other front pagers to check the scheduled posts before posting…)
Probably Not Safe For Family. Unless your family appreciates burlesque.

Of Anne Laurie’s videos, I liked the last one best — I really like a choir like that one. Maybe I should try to attend the mid-morning service at St. Thomas Church in the morning. They have a choir school and the combined men’s and boys choirs are great.
The magnificent Gloria– Misa Criolla – Jose Carreras
From the notes: Jose Carreras performs “Gloria” from “Misa Criolla” by Ariel Ramírez. The Misa, a mass for tenor, chorus and orchestra, is based on folk genres such as chacarera, carnavalito and estilo pampeano, with Andean influences and instruments. It is also one of the first masses to be celebrated in a modern language. Ramírez wrote the piece in 1963-1964.
@Adam L Silverman: Quintet? I only knew of two. And I am the right age.
For a non-churchgoing agnostic, I really like my holiday music.
There’s something wrong in a world where I only heard “Christmas Bells” the first time this season last night, becuase of an internet streaming radio, but I’ve got a repetitive stress injury from tuning the terrestrial radio away from “The Bell that Wouldn’t Jingle” at least three dozen times since Black Friday.
The holiday, winter and Christmas music selections, the actual recordings, on the commercial radio have been contracting down to about 50. Weird, old, and forgotten stuff, like handbell ensembles, “meditations”, the Ultra Lounge Chirstmas Cocktail series, a Big Band Xmas, and plenty of old jazz and opera renditions do the trick for me.
Heck, even Martha Stewart’s “A Martha Kinda Christmas” is better than the radio!
A reminder to those with Netflix streaming that “A Very Murray Christmas” is available for streaming. It’s more of a musical special than anything else and has a lot of fun cameos.
(One cameo people might not “get” right away — the French pop band Phoenix shows up. Their lead singer is married to Sofia Coppola, the special’s director.)
Seriously, I’m a lapsed Catholic who got that joke right away, but it took me ten years and binge watching on FXX to get “Skip Church’s”,the place where the Bluths always went for Sunday brunch.
Wow, I could really go for a Skip’s Scramble.

@ThresherK: They did five Snoopy and Red Baron songs. The Christmas one was the the third – came out about two years after the original. They actually, amazingly, did a music video for the first one with someone in a Snoopy suit in a biplane in a simulated dog fight with someone dressed as the Red Baron: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxJbY5N74zo
I managed to flip to PBS a bit ago to whatever Trans-Siberian Orchestra show they’re showing this year just in time for their electrified version of Caroling Bells.

@ThresherK: I basically try not to go out until Christmas is over. The drivers down here are out of control! I almost got t-boned this afternoon about 3 when on my way home with the four foots from the dog park. Old guy in an SUV who didn’t understand our color coded system of stop lights. I’m thinking of mounting twin fifty caliber machine guns on rotating bases on my car.

@ThresherK: I’m in Florida. Northern Pinellas County. Not sure how much longer. While I’ve got a packet in for an assignment that would keep me down here, I’ve got others in that would take me back up north(ish). I expect to hear in January now that the spending bill has passed.
Love the “Father Christmas” performance by a fat Greg Lake (ELP) and a bald Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), two old warhorses from the prog rock era. They still know how to play though, which gives me comfort going into my old age.

I really dislike Christmas music. Just my opinion.
It’s the overt commercialization that’s done it for me. I just can’t stand the marketing.
Edited to add: I mean this was a big mean bah humbug which was not warranted for Anne’s great thread.

I posted this on twitter for DougJ, but I’m sharing it with on this post too, since it’s a “holiday music” post.
