Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Come on, man.

No one could have predicted…

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Republicans do not trust women.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

Petty moves from a petty man.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Feral Swine Menace Frosty

Actually, these pigs were so small we wondered if maybe they were someone’s escaped micro-herd of pet potbellied pigs:

image

Could be baby ferals too, but we didn’t see a sow lurking nearby. It’s a mystery.

I did come across an interesting idea here – the payout for wrongful death shootings by Chicago cops should come from the police pension fund & not the city. It seems that might break the blue wall of silence.

Besides, the union will just ask the City to contribute more if the fund is liable.

    From IMDB:

Haskell Wexler, a cinematographer by trade, practically invented the technique invented we know today as “cinema verite” with this striking drama that plays so much like a documentary, you’d never guess it was fiction without being told. It’s less a story and more a voyeuristic look into the lives of ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances, in this case reporters who are covering a political convention and other Chicago locals who are just minding their own business when the legendary riots break out at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

Even more groundbreaking is the approach Wexler takes in framing the film’s final scenes. He had ample warning that there would potentially be some unrest at the convention, so he decided to thrust his cast right into the thick of it, sending them to the foyer and front entrance of the Chicago Convention Center and the crew right along to film the events. No one knew exactly what would happen, making this perhaps the most creative and timely piece of “improvised” drama in the history of filmmaking up to this point.

Every documentary filmmaker who chooses to make his/her film about actions and events rather than simply a bunch of talking heads owes a debt to Wexler and his creative team on “Medium Cool”.

@Schlemazel: My idea was for police officers to be paid a standard amount, say $15 an hour for a 40 hour week, a bit more for overtime. They also get a monthly bonus award based on hours worked that month. The monthly bonus is paid out of a sinking fund i.e. the bonus depends on what’s in the fund and no more. The bad news for them is that all wrongful death payouts, abuse compensation awards etc. come out of that fund too. More claims, less clams.

So, Ramadi is about to be fully retaken from Daesh forces. Why is this not big news? I.e. if Daesh is an existential threat to the US and our way of life, isn’t everything about it important? Strange.

@catclub: Why isn’t it big news that the Republicans won’t authorize military force if ISIS is such a big threat? Because the existential fear is a sham that the media is happy to go along with.

    @OzarkHillbilly: Cops still have pensions.

In NYC, the uniformed workers have unions and pensions (cope, firefighters, corrections officers, and sanitation workers). Although the cops got a smaller raise than what they wanted from the City this past year. The cop union played a game and went for arbitration, thinking they’d get more that way but the arbitration panel gave them about the same as what the City was offering them. Bloomberg kept putting off the contract/salary talks and left them for DiBlasio.

@schrodinger’s cat: Do you live where there is snow? I had a gen II Prius-only thing I had to do was to replace the auxillary battery. Prius’s don’t like snow very much-their traction control gets twitchy. The RAV4 hybrid is now out, and it only adds $700 to the base price.

@Howard Beale IV: Yes I do live in snow country, specifically Massachusetts. I asked my friend from upstate NY who has had a Prius for the last 3 year about the snow question. All he said he does is put snow tires in winter and that is enough. Prius is one of the most common cars here in the People’s Republic.

  69. 69.

    Howard Beale IV

    December 27, 2015 at 9:25 pm

@schrodinger’s cat: If you’re going to flip for a dedicated set of snows then get the Nokian Hakkapiletta’s or if you don’t like changing tires then the WR G3’s will do the job nicely – the stock tires on the Prius suck-at least get the WR G3s (top rated high-performance all-season by Consumer Reports.) I live in the Twin Cities – the Prius is also a fairly common sight around here was well, but the twitchiness of its traction control was eating on my nerves and I needed more room to haul things around and AWD, so I got a RAV4 Limited.
