Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

In my day, never was longer.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

No one could have predicted…

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Everybody saw this coming.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

I was promised a recession.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Thurston wishes you all a very fashion forward 2016:

I hate myself for even writing that. Devon bought the coat, btw.

PS- this is what he looks like when I am not dangling treats and a camera in his face:

If any American city would be looking for a solution at the intersection between “nasty, destructive drunks running in packs” and “high-minded social uplift, preferably with support for local artists involved”, wouldn’t you have bet on Boston to be first?

  43. 43.

    FlyingToaster

    December 31, 2015 at 10:21 pm

@JPL: And it’s functionally gone from Boston, now.

The loss of companies with headquarters here meant that after 3 years ago, they were unable to get the up-front sponsorships and the Boston org went bust. The city (under Menino) sponsored a limited version for one year, then last year was severely truncated and this year it was free looking at ice sculptures at Copley Place, a promenade down to the Common and fireworks at 7.

WarriorGirl and I went from when she was 2 until 5. They had dancers and bands and gymnasts and puppet shows (realllllllly good puppet shows) at the Hynes until 6 pm, then we’d go look at the ice sculptures while the parade went by, then we’d hike up to the Auditorium T stop and head out to Newton Centre (to be picked up by HerrDoktor and taken home). She was up here a few minutes ago complaining about not having First Night AGAIN.

    December 31, 2015 at 10:53 pm

@FlyingToaster: I was up there for a conference in early December and saw a magazine article about how FirstNight has really fallen on hard times.

J’s parents lived in Concord, and we went to FN a couple of times while we were courting in the late ’90s or so. It was *cold* but amazing. We saw the Blue Man group perform there, and got a look at some of the first Segways zooming around in the parade (ridden by cops).

It was a really great event. I couldn’t believe that Boston wouldn’t move Heaven and Earth to keep it up. I understand WarriorGirl’s disappointment!

Here’s hoping they find a way to get it to thrive again.

    Cheers,
