Not surprised the Chiefs are winning, mildly surprised it’s this easy. My own personal power rating had the Chiefs at #7 and the Texans at #12 coming into this game.
I think the Chiefs will be the sexy pick in the next round, they’re playing better than either Denver or New England at this point.

Yes, Chuckie it is a great story. And in 3 years or less we’ll find out the truth, that E Berry took a mountain load of PEDs and/or HGH to come back faster and stronger than ever.

Home field, better record…
But playoffs are QB time, and it’s 2-time SB winner vs. guy making 8th career start.
If the Bengals can get some early breaks and keep a lead, maybe. If they get some bad breaks early, I could see it turning into a rout.

I’m thinking the Seahawks are ripe for an upset, because of the ease with which they won the first matchup.
I don’t think Lynch not playing is a huge loss, because they guy’s been on the shelf for half the season and isn’t going to be in top form. And in a crucial moment, Pete would go for the inside slant anyway. ;-)
The proposed stadium solutions in Oakland, St. Louis and San Diego are “unsatisfactory and inadequate” to keep the Raiders, Rams and Chargers in their home markets, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a report distributed Saturday to all 32 teams.

I don’t think the ‘Hawks play well in extreme weather
On the other hand, Minnesota doesn’t know anything about playing in the cold either. They’ve had a domed stadium until this year, and it’s been chilly, but not arctic all week.
Catching passes in the cold is more difficult, but not impossible. If AP is stopped, Minnesota has nothing else to fall back on. If the cold knocks 15 points off of Wilson’s completion rate, he’s still throwing 60%.
42.
Corner Stone
@Heliopause: Personally, I advocated the Texans trade for Matthew Stafford before the deadline. There are a number of reclamation type NFL QBs I would happily trade for. Nothing worth drafting. We have to get someone on the O side or lose JJ shortly, and probably Hopkins. Foster most likely will not see the field again as a Texan, but the RB spot has really ratcheted down in the last 3-4 years so not as big a problem as QB for us.
43.
Schlemazel
@Mike J:
We have a hockey game 1 block from the Stadium tomorrow. Games starts at 2. We know parking will be difficult and obscenely over-priced so are taking the tram. We don’t have to start out till after the drunks start puking INSIDE the stadium so thats good. I am prying for a huge blow out so the drunks start home early other wise we will be getting out shortly after the game ends & those same drunks will be puking inside the train cars. So thats one vote for an early 4-5 TD lead for the C-hogs
I don’t think anybody on either team has a lot of experience playing in zero degrees fahrenheit. The conventional wisdom is that bad weather is a “great equalizer” so we’ll see what that means.
46.
Schlemazel
@CaseyL:
Didn’t they kick Green Bay in the freezing playoffs?
47.
Mike J
@Schlemazel: I have a chance at getting a ride on a new boat for the racing series that starts next week. I have a feeling my chances go up if the Hawks win, because people will want to watch the game rather than stand on a pitching foredeck in the rain and cold.
48.

@Gimlet: Sounds like someone’s moving here to LALAland.
ETA: None of the current proposals(Inglewood, Carson) have a public financing component. The public will be on the hook for traffic improvements. Thank pasta the downtown project is dead, dead.
Catching passes in the cold is more difficult, but not impossible.
The Times had an article about what happens to the football in that kind of cold. Interesting stuff – I knew the balls got harder, but not that they also got smaller (which makes sense, if I’d thought about it: air contracts), and you have to throw a little harder.
I hope the team practiced in a simulation – like, in a giant meat locker.
ETA: @Schlemazel: That one was pure luck. Not that I discount luck at all, but Green Bay outplayed the ‘Hawks pretty much the entire game.
50.
Schlemazel
@Mike J:

Be that as it may it didn’t cause them to lose.
Just thinking, they’ve been going with recycled QBs for a while and maybe they’ll be thinking differently this time. On the other hand, no real kickass prospects available to them in the coming draft that I can think of.
60.
Steeplejack (phone)
Here’s hoping this game is better than the earlier one. Pittsburgh is a three-point favorite, and the over-under is 45.5.
Maybe they could let a couple psi out of the balls to compensate.
Careful! If WFL Commissioner Roger “What Can I Fuck Up Today?” Goodell hears about that, the press will end up calling it something like “Let-a-couple-psi-out-of-the-balls-gate,” although that’s a little cumbersome to say.
On the other hand, no real kickass prospects available to them in the coming draft that I can think of.
Maybe they can work a trade with Cleveland, I hear they have a pretty good QB – so good, in fact, that people used to call him “Johnny Fussball” or something like that.
@Steeplejack (phone): It can’t hardly be much worse. What a freakin’ debacle of deboring.

And he lied about how much he’d have to charge for pizza if he had to give his employees health care. And the Nationwide ads are just annoying whatever you may think of Payton Manning. But I just don’t like him.
@JPL: Boston sports radio blowhards this week: Pats still better than KC, Houston and Cincy. They sound like they did in 2010 when the Jets came here and won after losing 45-3 in the regular season. Only Houston would’ve been a safe game next week the way the Pat’s injury report stands today.
According to the NFL Record and Fact Book, the Steelers are among 16 teams that play their home games on grass. The others are the Browns, Texans, Jaguars, Chiefs, Dolphins, Raiders, Chargers, Titans, Cardinals, Panthers, Bears, Eagles, 49ers, Buccaneers and Redskins.
No mud today. Perhaps another day.

@JPL: Yeah, I heard the word “impressive” a couple times. They won the game, obvs, but 5 TO’s are hard to overcome no matter who you are playing. ETA: There should be a race to see who gets fired first, Lewis or the official that tossed the 2nd flag.

And the Bengals defeat the Bengals.
246.
Corner Stone
@different-church-lady: Bullshit. That was egregious by the refs. They should be thankful it’s football in the states.
247.
Cacti
Didn’t think it was possible for a team to out-dirty the Steelers, but, there it is.
for what I saw of the Bengals – Steelers games, it was sloppy. the mess at the end with the penalties is a huge downer for the Bengals, part of me would blame the player(s) responsible for that but it’ll likely be the coach who has to answer for the bad penalties. Coaches are supposed to instill Discipline…
If there is any justice, Steelers players responsible for illegal hits this game should be suspended for the next game.
249.
cokane
most bengals loss ever what the fucking hell. alot of cincy fans blaming refs, which maybe theres a case but still you cannot give the game away like that. so disappointing
250.
JordanRules
If you don’t do the dumb shit, the refs have no damn power. I mean seriously, they had the game won and lost their damn minds. I don’t give a damn what Joey Porter said to them.
And looks like AB is in concussion protocol and Big Ben is likely out next week. We won’t do shit against Denver.
251.
Corner Stone
@efgoldman: C’mon. Call that game up and down. The refs gave that game to the Steelers at the critical end. Hard to fight back against two personal fouls inside the last few seconds.
252.
Cacti
Could anyone other than the Cincy fans have made Rapistberger look like a sympathetic figure.
I mean seriously? Cheering a guy who’s injured and throwing garbage at him as he’s carted in for X-rays?
WTF?

@Corner Stone: yeah because a 32 year old player like Pac Man Jones shouldn’t know better than to run into a crowd and hit a ref 30 seconds after the play ended.
257.
Corner Stone
@Honus: He didn’t hit anyone after the play. Garbage time BS.
258.
Corner Stone
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: He was lookin’ afor the Widow Webb. But teh Deceiver had her in hand.
259.
Honus
@Corner Stone: right. im sorry your team fucked the dog, but they did everything they got called for. Maybe if they had won something before they’d know how to act at the end of a game when they have it won.
260.
RB1123
Stay classy Cincinnati.
261.
Corner Stone
@Honus: My team fucked the dog earlier in the day. But any honest observer understood the refs completely fucked the PIT-CIN game.
That was awful and completely unprofessional. Just garbage time.
262.
Corner Stone
@efgoldman: Have a cite for that? No? Didn’t think so.
263.
Corner Stone
@efgoldman: “Stupid shit like that” Like what? Have a ref call PF to the chip shot?
Sorry. You and Merrill Hogie with bologna don’t do it for me on what happened to gift this game to PIT.
Cats in a fracking handbag, glad it was Person of Interest on NetFlix instead of whatever happened to all of you. I guess the Stillers are going to Denver. hahahahhahaahahaha

Oh yeah. An up tempo offense and get the ball to Hopkins. Genius, Chuckie!

I will hope for the Bengals to beat the Steelers, but their track record says that Pittsburgh will beat them instead. Isn’t the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? sigh.

Yes, Chuckie it is a great story. And in 3 years or less we’ll find out the truth, that E Berry took a mountain load of PEDs and/or HGH to come back faster and stronger than ever.

@donnah:
Home field, better record…
But playoffs are QB time, and it’s 2-time SB winner vs. guy making 8th career start.
If the Bengals can get some early breaks and keep a lead, maybe. If they get some bad breaks early, I could see it turning into a rout.
Mike J
@CaseyL: Front pager at Field Gulls says he has a bad feeling about tomorrow against the Vikes. I hope he’s just stirring up the comment section. I’m not expecting a blowout of the same proportions as last time, but I think they can bottle up Peterson again, and I hope C-Mike can move it.

I am sort of halfway following it on ESPN’s web site, and it is painful to even to that.
Cacti
@Mike J:

Corner Stone

CaseyL
@Mike J: I have a bad feeling because of the cold. I don’t think the ‘Hawks play well in extreme weather (remembering how badly they lost to San Diego in 120-degree heat; and how just-damn-horrible they were against STL in the rain two weeks ago).
Mike J
@Corner Stone: Three down, twenty nine to go. Move them all to LA.
Heliopause
The Texans have not recently gone for the “franchise” type quarterback and I wonder if that thinking might change come next draft.
Corner Stone
I’ve actually always liked Alex Smith and wish him well moving forward.
Corner Stone

Mike J
@CaseyL:
Schlemazel
@Mike J:
Corner Stone
Damn, Alex Smith makes Ray Lewis look small.
Heliopause
@CaseyL:
I don’t think anybody on either team has a lot of experience playing in zero degrees fahrenheit. The conventional wisdom is that bad weather is a “great equalizer” so we’ll see what that means.
Schlemazel
@CaseyL:
Didn’t they kick Green Bay in the freezing playoffs?
Mike J
@Schlemazel: I have a chance at getting a ride on a new boat for the racing series that starts next week. I have a feeling my chances go up if the Hawks win, because people will want to watch the game rather than stand on a pitching foredeck in the rain and cold.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Gimlet: Sounds like someone’s moving here to LALAland.
ETA: None of the current proposals(Inglewood, Carson) have a public financing component. The public will be on the hook for traffic improvements. Thank pasta the downtown project is dead, dead.
CaseyL
@Mike J:
Schlemazel
@Mike J:
Actually, they have played outdoors the last 2 seasons and practice outdoors too. OTOH they still suck
Schlemazel
@Mike J:
Yeah, neither of those are on my list of top 1000 things to do before I die. But I hope it goes well for you.
Schlemazel
@CaseyL:
Be that as it may it didn’t cause them to lose.

Steeplejack (phone)

N. D. Kalu disagrees. However, I don’t. I wouldn’t trade Watt for anyone with the possible exception of Cam Newton.
Enjoying Stillers Bengals in the slop.
JPL
@efgoldman: True. I was over thinking it. If Pittsburgh knocked out Denver, then the Pats play at home, the following game. Right now, they don’t have a team to win next week.
Heliopause
@Corner Stone:
What about McCarron?
p.a.
@Davebo: Needs mud. Football should have mud.
Shana
@Steeplejack (phone): Actually, he just annoys me. He’s part owner of Papa John’s, and PJ is pretty scummy, and his pizza sucks. And he lied about how much he’d have to charge for pizza if he had to give his employees health care. And the Nationwide ads are just annoying whatever you may think of Payton Manning. But I just don’t like him.
Davebo
@efgoldman: Last I saw it was 45.5
Yep, not getting close to that.
Davebo
@Shana: Manning is wearing thin on me as well.
But that SNL commercial was pretty classic.
p.a.
BruceFromOhio
@p.a.:
No mud today. Perhaps another day.
Corner Stone

Heliopause
@Corner Stone:
OK, how about Ryan Leaf? Beggars can’t be choosers.
Corner Stone
@JPL: Yeah, I heard the word “impressive” a couple times. They won the game, obvs, but 5 TO’s are hard to overcome no matter who you are playing. Alex Smith played a solid game though, I think with only the one INT. 17 for 22 for 190 yards, something like 77% completion rate makes Alex look like a real playoff QB stud.
Corner Stone
@Heliopause: Can I beg Warren Moon to come out of retirement?
I mean, I keep talking about starting NFL QBs and others want to keep bringing in something else. Maybe Dan Marino is feeling it these days after a decade on NutriSystem?

Completion for zero yards and a dead receiver is just how they drew it up.

How the heck was that not a hit on a defenseless receiver, leading with the crown of the helmet and hitting him in the head. The one they called on the Bengals in the first half was nowhere near as bad of a penalty. I think Goodell’s stupid not using the best crew’s is a bust.
Richard Mayhew
Helmet to helmet in playoffs should be suspensions on advancement not fines as the incentive structure is to destroy opponents and pay 10k next month
MobiusKlein
how can the NFL allow head crushing blows to lead to game-changing turnovers?

Well, that’s a red rag from Tomlin to the officials. Expect them to call everything marginally dirty — and let’s be fair here, the Steelers are a dirty team — because he wanted more out of that dirtyish hit.
Corner Stone
Why not just let Burfict go for it at this point?
Bill Murray
@pseudonymous in nc: yeah but the Bengals are so riled up about the crappy calls that they will probably get all the penalties
Bill Murray
@Corner Stone: because they don’t want to like the Steelers?
Corner Stone
@pseudonymous in nc: Any team that has Harrison on the roster should never get the benefit of the doubt. That dirty motherfucker should have never played another down after the Colt McCoy hit a couple years ago.

@MobiusKlein: Frog and the Scorpion – it’s what they do.
Nobody remembers Madden being all giddy whenever someone would get the stuffing knocked out of them? It wasn’t that long ago.
The NFL isn’t about the sport, it’s about getting viewers and money for the owners. It doesn’t matter how many people get hurt or killed in the process. I thought everyone knew that by now.

Disclaimer: I have watch an Arena of football fans cheer for one side or another in the Tough Actin’ v. Tinactin tug of war. Multiple times. That’s when you learn to spot the folks who really want to win some free athlete’s foot medicine.

@CaseyL: These teams have hated each other for decades. As have their fans. Many arrests for brawls, especially at late games. And the Steelers fans often didn’t bond out.
Corner Stone
Of course it was a legal tackle, Nantz.
raven
Sweet
JPL
@Corner Stone: I had to mute my tv.
Corner Stone
Landry.Motherfucking.Jones.
raven
Why would he have his helmet on in a driving rain?
Apex802
Nance has boner. Rapist is on the sidelines.
Chester
Nance has erection. The rapist is on the sideline.
Bill Murray
@raven: doesn’t want to muss his hair
CaseyL
@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): That’s fitting, because it’s like a throwback to games in decades past.
ETA: Cincy scores with 1:50 left in the game. Wonder if Big Ben will go back in, shoulder or no shoulder.
JPL
wow
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Holy Crap.
Bill Murray
well, Big Ben will be back in after all. Unless he us way too hurt
Davebo
Told ya!
raven
What I say.
How bout that Dawg@!!
p.a.
I went away and a football game broke out!
I guess if Ben is to be questionable next week I root for Cincy to win, as having a better chance against 1anddone Manning than a Landry-led Steelers?@Corner Stone: Don’t forget ‘von Falkenheyn’s’ knee shot against Carson Palmer in a playoff game. (Cole would know the guy’s real name. Hope Shawn has hidden the sharp objects tonight.)
Steeplejack (phone)
Shnikeys.
Steeplejack (phone)
Worst two-point conversion attempt ever.
Richard Mayhew
@p.a.: Bengalsl would get new England ,kc goes to Denver
Steeplejack (phone)
Game over, man.
ETA: I spoke too soon.
Bill Murray
Burfict with the pick
Richard Mayhew
Get a healthy and safety check on Cole stat
JPL
The announcers are awful..
Bill Murray
and the Bengals Bungle it
Jim, Foolish Literalist
what the ding dong hell just happened?
Richard Mayhew
Fumble… No one wants this game to be over
CaseyL
Holy crap.
How can you play it any safer than running the damn ball? Maybe by just falling down and not risking a fumble.
Holy crap.
ETA: And, yup, here comes Ben.
p.a.
@Richard Mayhew:
auto correct strikes again?
I know if Cincy wins they go to NE, I’m more worried about someone going to Denver who can beat them so NE doesn’t go there; it’s a Pats house of horrors. I think KC won their game there this year.
Bill Murray
@JPL: but they have soothing voices and always back the conventional wisdom
pseudonymous in nc
This is a mental health crisis masquerading as a sporting contest.
Cckids
@Steeplejack (phone): Maybe not.
JPL
I now want Cincy cuz how bad would one feel to fumble with a minute and a half to go. .
Steeplejack (phone)
This is cutting into my Dalziel and Pascoe time, yet I cannot look away.
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
@pseudonymous in nc: That about sums it up.
p.a.
They need the what, Cincy 30?
Bill Murray
Huge tackle by 90 for the Bengals
raven
@p.a.: Ben got no arm.
JPL
@efgoldman: You are right.. Just now, it would have been a first down, but it wasn’t
CaseyL
I am so glad I’m not a fan of either of these teams; I’d be having a heart attack right now.
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
@raven: That’s putting it politely. They did cart him off for a reason, apparently.
Bill Murray
@p.a.: probably more like the 40. Boswell has been pretty good this year
Bill Murray
how much do the refs have riding on the Steelers? Same type hit as the one that put Bernard out, but only the Bengals get the flag
JPL
Well.. that’s not good
MobiusKlein
That was stupid
p.a.
WTF
raven
Fuck em with that cheap shit.
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
@MobiusKlein: Understated.
@efgoldman: Now you’re putting it politely. How to give away a game 101 motherfucker. And I don’t much care.
pseudonymous in nc
Can both teams lose?
Steeplejack (phone)
Stupid foul by 55.
raven
@Bill Murray: You don’t understand the difference between a runner and a reviewer huh? They explained it about 5 times.
Corner Stone
I hope these refs have an escort out of Cincy.
Bill Murray
Can I say again how I hate not using the referee units
Chester
The NFL not for long.
Onkel Fritze
There seems to be a certain lack of discipline on the part of the Bengals….
Corner Stone
Yeah, it was 55. Wevs.
David Koch
Wow – I’ve never seen such orderly chaos.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Zounds, gadzooks and gol blimey
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
As much of a snoozer as the early game was, this one was at least engaging.
I lied; I wanted the Bengals to win. I iz disappoint. or is it I haz a sad? I don’t know how to internet right.
Bill Murray
@raven: so you can lead with the crown of your helmet against a runner? Huh? But I bow to your superior superciliousness
MobiusKlein
Seems like Steelers were baiting for the second penalty.
Bengals are idots.
Was an exciting game until that turd
David Koch
Bengals – snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Corner Stone
These refs should be looking for state patrolman to exit. What a fucking joke.
Heliopause
That was like watching root canal. Donald Trump deserved to win that game more than either team.
p.a.
Any city that puts cinnamon flavored chili on spaghetti deserves nothing.
CaseyL
I’d feel bad for the Bengals if they hadn’t brought this on themselves. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, via a fumble and then disgraceful personal fouls.
The Dangerman
On “deciding play”, first 15 was deserved…
…second 15 was bullshit.
Ridiculous brain cramps at the end by the Bengals, but the Refs practically gave the game to the Steelers. Sick, sick, sick.
ETA: There should be a race to see who gets fired first, Lewis or the official that tossed the 2nd flag.
different-church-lady
And the Bengals defeat the Bengals.
Corner Stone
@different-church-lady: Bullshit. That was egregious by the refs. They should be thankful it’s football in the states.
Cacti
Didn’t think it was possible for a team to out-dirty the Steelers, but, there it is.
Just, wow Cincy.
PaulW
for what I saw of the Bengals – Steelers games, it was sloppy. the mess at the end with the penalties is a huge downer for the Bengals, part of me would blame the player(s) responsible for that but it’ll likely be the coach who has to answer for the bad penalties. Coaches are supposed to instill Discipline…
If there is any justice, Steelers players responsible for illegal hits this game should be suspended for the next game.
cokane
most bengals loss ever what the fucking hell. alot of cincy fans blaming refs, which maybe theres a case but still you cannot give the game away like that. so disappointing
Corner Stone
@efgoldman: C’mon. Call that game up and down. The refs gave that game to the Steelers at the critical end. Hard to fight back against two personal fouls inside the last few seconds.
Cacti
Could anyone other than the Cincy fans have made Rapistberger look like a sympathetic figure.
I mean seriously? Cheering a guy who’s injured and throwing garbage at him as he’s carted in for X-rays?
WTF?
Corner Stone
Crying AJ.
Ruckus
@p.a.:
And even leaving out the over cooked spaghetti it still tastes like something you’d scrape off your shoe before going in the house.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Corner Stone: did he point at Jesus whilst a’weeping?
Honus
@Corner Stone: yeah because a 32 year old player like Pac Man Jones shouldn’t know better than to run into a crowd and hit a ref 30 seconds after the play ended.
Corner Stone
@Honus: He didn’t hit anyone after the play. Garbage time BS.
Corner Stone
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: He was lookin’ afor the Widow Webb. But teh Deceiver had her in hand.
Honus
@Corner Stone: right. im sorry your team fucked the dog, but they did everything they got called for. Maybe if they had won something before they’d know how to act at the end of a game when they have it won.
RB1123
Stay classy Cincinnati.
Corner Stone
@Honus: My team fucked the dog earlier in the day. But any honest observer understood the refs completely fucked the PIT-CIN game.
That was awful and completely unprofessional. Just garbage time.
Corner Stone
@efgoldman: Have a cite for that? No? Didn’t think so.
Corner Stone
@efgoldman: “Stupid shit like that” Like what? Have a ref call PF to the chip shot?
Sorry. You and Merrill Hogie with bologna don’t do it for me on what happened to gift this game to PIT.
BruceFromOhio
Cats in a fracking handbag, glad it was Person of Interest on NetFlix instead of whatever happened to all of you. I guess the Stillers are going to Denver. hahahahhahaahahaha
