Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Republicans in disarray!

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Consistently wrong since 2002

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Everybody saw this coming.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

This really is a full service blog.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

We are aware of all internet traditions.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Reality TV Has-Been Endorses Colleague (Updated)

So, the rumors were true: empty-headed reality TV has-been Sarah Palin officially endorsed the ambulatory, hirsute, angry Circus Peanut known as Donald Trump, according to the NYT. With any luck, this will result in a YOOODGE intraparty pie-fight.

Update: Predictably, the anti-Trump RedState crew shat a cat:

The Palins are just such ridiculous people. Today’s crapshow really showcased the high-tension neurosis that defines everything they are nowadays. Ted Cruz’s campaign manager released a fairly innocuous statement saying that if Palin endorsed Trump, he thought it might hurt Palin’s image. Nothing personally derogatory about Palin at all, and in fact Cruz himself tweeted earlier today that even if Palin endorsed Trump, he would remain a fan of hers.

So Sarah sends out her daughter’s not-very-talented ghostwriter to produce this utterly classless attack on Cruz that basically makes a huge deal out of the fact that Ted Cruz has said complimentary things about her in the past, and concludes with “no one likes you…” Anyway, I’m sure Trump is glad to have the aid of this huge, super classy family.

A scant eight years ago, that sort of talk would have triggered the mighty RedState Strike Force to implement Operation Leper!

Please please please PLEASE if Trump does get the nomination, let is VP pick be Sarah Palin. She may have a grifter-cunning sort of smarts about how to latch onto a teat on the wingnut gravy train, but in terms of the electorate beyond whatever still-admiring/leering wingnut circles that get starbursts from her aura, the rest of the electorate sees her as dumb as a box of rocks with the tawdry drama of a Jerry Springer show participant from a cheap trailer park.

OT to note that the “both sides poisoned Flint” narrative is settling in: Fournier just croaked it out on MSNBC (no pushback), and Ted Cruz just blamed “government at all levels.”

Really wish we Dems, including Hillary, could just fucking say “Republican policies poised Flint’s water. It’s the inevitable outcome of hating government. Your children drink water that poisons them.”

    How hard is that?

We’ve really gone through the looking glass. I guess as we approach the wingularity event horizon, reality show becomes reality and vice versa. It’s like every ridiculous once-was from tacky movies and bad TV has been summoned from the crypt by The Donald. Kirk Cameron is stumping for Ben Carson. This country has become an embarrassing shit show.

As a History PhD (currently teaching full time but not on the tenure track) I am barely employable in this country… and the humanities academic job market in the entire Anglophone world is as at least as screwed up as it is in the US. I’m pretty sure that I lack the desired job skills and earning potential to get admission to any First World country. And that’s before the mass exodus and more intense competition that would follow a Trumpocalypse or similar disaster. My only “hope” would be things going so far off the rails that the anti-brown/gay/leftist/etc. persecution would be bad enough to give me a plausible case for asylum. Oh boy, I can hardly wait…

Really wish we Dems, including Hillary, could just fucking say “Republican policies poised Flint’s water. It’s the inevitable outcome of hating government. Your children drink water that poisons them.”

If Hillary were to do this (and she should), it would be a step in the direction of affirmatively showing that she is the fighter for the little people that she states she is. Folks like passion and they reward it. They really do. Some of Hillary’s best moments last year was her professionally emotive performance in front of Congress.

If she lets moments like the one you point to escape her, she is showing that she is not up to the fight.

This kind of shit is what steams me so when conservative assholes bleat about the unfairness of the “liberal press”. “Fair” would indeed be to dump this smoldering heap of blame where it belongs, at the feet of Republican sociopaths. Yeah, but, no. They won’t say that. At least the “serious” people won’t say that. It’ll all be, “Well, surely there’s blame to go around. Your Twitter account has several disparaging comments about women’s looks. You once told a contestant on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ it would be a pretty picture to see her on her knees. Does that sound to you like the temperament of a man we should elect as president, and how will you answer the charge from Hillary Clinton, who was likely to be the Democratic nominee, that you are part of the war on women?

@Bokonon: Obama’s so polarizing and partisan Bernie Sanders wanted a primary challenger in 2012, even thought about doing it himself.

Referencing his regular appearances on Thom Hartmann’s nationally syndicated radio show, Sanders said: “I do a radio show every week. Over a million people hear it in almost every state in the country. Those are working-class people, progressive people. There is a lot of disillusionment. They want the president to stand up for the middle class, for the working class of this country, and they want him to take on big money interests in a way that he has not done up to this point.”

The audio won’t be available until 7pm, but it’ll be worth the wait.

The accompanying story includes part of the clip:

And Palin praised Trump late last year on Fox News, calling him “the best thing to happen to the permanent political class since, oh I guess, the beauty of the Tea Party genuine movement rose up and shined a light on crony capitalism and then pulled the rug right out from under status quo politicicans who just kind of embraced that political class.”

When will Michael Bay have the definitive documentary out on Hillary’s emails.

EXCLUSIVE: Hillary Clinton’s emails on her unsecured, homebrew server contained intelligence from the U.S. government’s most secretive and highly classified programs, according to an unclassified letter from a top inspector general to senior lawmakers.

Fox News exclusively obtained the unclassified letter, sent Jan. 14 from Intelligence Community Inspector General I. Charles McCullough III. It laid out the findings of a recent comprehensive review by intelligence agencies that identified “several dozen” additional classified emails — including specific intelligence known as “special access programs” (SAP).

That indicates a level of classification beyond even “top secret,” the label previously given to two emails found on her server, and brings even more scrutiny to the presidential candidate’s handling of the government’s closely held secrets.

While the State Department and Clinton campaign have said the emails in questions were “retroactively classified” or “upgraded” – to justify the more than 1,300 classified emails on her server – those terms are meaningless under federal law.

    NEW MICHAEL BAY POST.

    January 19, 2016 at 7:19 pm

@Gimlet: As someone who has clearance at all of those levels this really doesn’t make a lot of sense. Anything that is special access program (SAP) only, let alone sensitive compartmented information (SCI) or even just Top Secret (TS), is compartmented. In order for this to have originated on her server – as in from her – she would have had to recreate from memory whatever it is that she read and or heard while in the sensitive compartmented information facility (SCIF). While that’s possible, I find that hard to believe. What would be more likely is that someone emailed her something that they had seen or heard. This would be called spillage and the receiver is not on the hook for any penalty, just the sender/originator. There is spillage all over the Internet. Technically no one with active clearances can read or access anything on Snowden because those news reports all contained spillage of classified information.

What I think is the most likely thing going on here is that she was sent things by people who thought it was unclassified. The reason for this is that classification, or steps up in classification, are not necessarily because a specific piece of information is classified, but rather because its combined with one or more other pieces of what would be on its own unclassified, but when combined are deemed to be either Secret (S), Top Secret (TS), Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI), or Special Access Program (SAP).

And while it may be true that reclassification after the fact has no salience under Federal Law, it happens all the time. Stuff is periodically reviewed to determine if it can be partially or completely declassified. When this happens it is sometimes determined that it needs to actually, because of changes around the world, have its classification increased. In other cases something maybe ambiguously marked, hung on a server of higher classification than needs be, and then it technically defaults to that level of classification.

McCain isn’t a hero, because he nearly sank the USN Forrestal CV-59 when he dropped his bomb load into a flight deck awash in flaming jet fuel. I’m hoping he works hard against Trump, who is more of a turd than a trump.

Palin is just – how to put this? – stupid, I guess will do. Everything she has done since her election as mayor of her little berg in Alaska has shown her lack of thought, lack of education, lack of knowledge. So she is perfect for Trump and his campaign.

It took her a while to be able to take a breath (in her case a tension-breaking yawn) and be able to follow directions and be praised. Once she was getting a lot of praise, she got addicted to it. She still loses her mind if she sees other dogs through the fence though. Sawyer tries to herd her away from the fence, what a good boy. Not that it does anything but he tries, and looks up to the house to be sure I’m watching.

I swear, if I thought I could afford it, I would sell off everything here and just move to southern Germany, preferably down in Swabia between the Black Forest to the West, the Swabian Alb to the east. South of Tuebingen, where I went to Uni for a year. My father and uncles who fought that last good war, WWII, would, I think, be disappointed by the irony of my choice, especially the two that advanced into Germany with Patton’s army.
