Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The lights are all blinking red.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Fight them, without becoming them!

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

We will not go back.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

True, but Joe died over a year ago. The intertubes has somehow resurrected and killed him again. ETA: he passed on December 22, 2014.

Yesterday or so, the Facebooks were burning up with the news that Jean Stapleton had died. (She died in May 2013.)

And a few weeks ago, I got sucked, or suckered, in — for the second time, I’m afraid — by the news that Bob Denver had passed. (He did, in 2005.)

I’m trying to train myself to double- and triple-check dates before I pass these along. Wonder how they get started so frequently.

Whew. For a moment there I thought I had come unstuck in time. I remember well when he died.

One of the greatest rock concerts, no darn it, the greatest I ever saw was the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. This was only partly because his opening act was Van Morrison, who was in fact who I had come to see. I’m dating myself no matter what here, but I was very young. I couldn’t even drive there, I had to hitchhike.

Also, an inspiration for one of the best music videos ever:

OT, but potentially of interest as current news:
No bond for Ammo Bundy, his brother Ryan, Jason Patrick, Ryan Payne, and Dylan Anderson. Ammo’s counsel plans to appeal.
Joseph O’Shaughnessy was permitted to be released under home detention and GPS monitoring, and Shawna Cox to be released with conditions once the occupation of the refuge is over. The magistrate was undecided about bond for Santilli. The government will appeal the release of O’Shaughanessy.

The appeal will be to the US District Judge; the bonds were set – and denied – by a US magistrate judge. There is an automatic right of appeal to the US District Judge, so none of this is procedurally unusual.

this worked so well last time…

“You know, people often ask Trey Gowdy and myself, what did our investigations do?” Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) told Boston Herald Radio on Friday morning. Gowdy currently chairs the House Select Committee on Benghazi, while Issa conducted his own investigation in 2012 when he served as chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
“Well what they did is that they opened up an opportunity for the American people to sort of smell what’s in the garbage can,” Issa said. “And I think that’s the reason that a devout socialist who wants to nationalize almost everything in America is close to and probably will beat Hillary here in New Hampshire. It’s not because they like Republicans. It’s because they don’t trust Hillary.”

@Omnes Omnibus: A frequent proximity to stolen cars and one very profitable and well-timed, well insured fire (in fairness, it’s been years since I read this article)

@efgoldman: Well, he was, but the charges were dropped

The brothers were indicted for grand theft. Darrell argued that he had no knowledge of William’s activities; William claimed that his brother had authorized him to sell the car, and he produced a document dated a few weeks before the robbery that gave him power of attorney over his brother’s affairs. On February 15th, with the investigation ongoing, Darrell returned to the San Jose dealership and repurchased his car, for seventeen thousand dollars. In August, 1980, the prosecution dropped the case. Darrell insisted that he was a victim, not a criminal. William had produced evidence that he had the legal authority to sell the car, and the injured party was reimbursed.

@efgoldman: To be honest, I really loved my state job. I was also quite good at it. As for the rest, it just a bad couple of weeks. Happens everywhere. If you weren’t retired, I would advise you not to let people know of your competence. It comes back to haunt you. I was taking care of things that needed to be done this week that my equivalently positioned colleagues weren’t able to handle. Part of my annoyance. And my boss is totally over-worked and over-stressed and her nature is to react by lashing out over little things. I hate private sector jobs.
