Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

We still have time to mess this up!

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

The willow is too close to the house.

This really is a full service blog.

Putin dreamed of ending NATO, and now it’s Finnish-ed.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Republicans don’t trust women.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Every single one of us knew that this toxic stew of ignorance, arrested development, and gun worship would, in the end, boil down to something like this:

mahleur

Can we mandate that as part of their jail sentence they be required to get high school degrees?

On Friday, the occupiers upped the ante on their demands to the FBI. They won’t leave the refuge 30 miles south of Burns, they said, unless they first secure pardons for everyone involved in the occupation – not just themselves.

Previously, the four had said they would leave the refuge if federal authorities promised them they would not be charged with crimes.

I have to admit, I’d be kind of fascinated to know what leverage they think they have to be making demands. And when they’re rejected, increasing their demands.

I have to admit, I’d be kind of fascinated to know what leverage they think they have to be making demands.

The key is the word “think”. My impression is that their current negotiations are based more on hope than on thought. The only logic I can think of is that they figure the feds want them out without bloodshed, and they’re giving up that leverage by leaving. It’s also possible that they don’t believe any of them will be let out without charges, so they’re desperately trying to negotiate for something most of them could already get just by leaving.

@NonyNony: They are just sad losers. I read in news reports after the leaders were arrested, and I guess more was known about the preparation, that they spent several months planning the refuge takeover. Months. Think about that. Months.

And the first thing they had to do was send out an SOS for dry socks and snacks. When I read about how they harassed people in Burns, it was oafish and sad. From what I read, they just ran into random people who worked for the BLM (how, in what capacity, who cares?) and followed them home and threatened them.

If these people won’t leave, maybe best hope is that they all fall into a postprandial stupor after bingeing on snacks, and the law can quietly walk in and disarm them, before gently waking them up. Politely, of course, for they are sovereign citizens and must not be disrespected.

Why do you want them to go away?

And it’s clear that, whether you support him or not, Sanders’s campaign is the home of the prevailing grass-roots energy in this race. The most recent financial reports, for the period that ended in October, showed that the amount Clinton raised from donors giving less than $200 decreased from $8 million to $5.2 million, while Sanders’s low-dollar take nearly doubled, from $10.4 million to $20.2 million. Clinton raised barely a quarter of the amount from grass-roots donors that Sanders did. Whatever the ultimate result, that shows the Sanders campaign has accomplished extraordinary things in volunteer mobilization and small-donor fundraising, period.

No matter who wins, though, this primary season has shown — even before the voting begins — that our eventual nominee will need to figure out how their organization can replicate what the other candidate has done so well.

    Clinton…..$111,584 contributors 538
    Sanders…$.57,434 contributors 493

who’s grass roots are longer. my answer is neither, as I don’t believe money equals speech or energy.

As to Sanders’s online supporters. I should be more specific. I’m tired of going to a news site and having his supporters clog up posts attacking non-believers. Clinton’s supporters did the same in 2008. I, like most people, wanted the Clinton supporters to stop, as well. This cycle, it’s Sanders’s supporters who are out of control.

He said Clinton was getting money from one or another “industry” because her individual donors were filling in “nurses” or “work at a bank” or something. Both Clinton and Obama called him out on it.

In Iowa, a September Quinnipiac poll showed Sanders with a nineteen point lead over voters making less than $30,000, while Clinton led voters making over $100,000 by fourteen points. This week another Quinnipiac survey gave Sanders a four point lead overall, while showing income divisions sharpening even further:

@JPL: But he does have a point. Reagan though the CIA did fund and train bin Laden.

PRINCE BANDAR: This is ironic. In the mid-’80s, if you remember, we and the United — Saudi Arabia and the United States were supporting the Mujahideen to liberate Afghanistan from the Soviets. [bin Laden] came to thank me for my efforts to bring the Americans, our friends, to help us against the atheists, he said the communists.

    Isn’t it ironic?

KING: How ironic. In other words, he came to thank you for helping bring America to help him.

    PRINCE BANDAR: Right.

KING: And now he may be responsible for bombing Americans.

    PRINCE BANDAR: Absolutely.
