Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

When I was faster i was always behind.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

This post is in: Assholes

FacebookTweetEmail

The new president of Mount St. Mary’s, a private Catholic college in Maryland, is a former businessman who worked at a number of banks and consulting firms, including Bain. He has a simple plan for dealing with underperforming freshmen:

This is hard for you because you think of the students as cuddly bunnies, but you can’t. You just have to drown the bunnies … put a Glock to their heads…

The provost who dissented from this modest proposal was canned (but kept his tenured faculty position). Two faculty members, one with tenure, were also canned, for insufficent loyalty.

Obviously, the guy’s an asshole — more importantly, as seems to be the case with many other Bain alums, he’s a stupid asshole. Mount St. Mary’s cost of attendance is a few bucks shy of $50K per year. As someone who recently went through a college search with my kid, I can attest that otherwise undistinguished private schools sell themselves in part by convincing parents that $50K will buy their precious snowflakes more of the individual attention they need to succeed in the big, bad world. Putting a Glock to the head of little Johnny or Mary the first time they go out and get so drunk that they miss an exam is not part of the sales literature of Mount St. Mary’s competitors. But if this guy wants to run a $50K scared straight boot camp, he’s certainly working to fill an otherwise unoccupied market niche. Perhaps the invisible hand of the unfettered free market will pull the trigger on its Glock of freedom and put the new president of Mount St. Mary’s out of its misery.

This quote apparently came out in the student newspaper.

And then the faculty advisor of the paper was fired, banned from campus, for unspecified “disloyalty”.

Way off topic, but the FBI is moving in on the fab four in The Malheur. It’s an unbelievable situation. Somehow the morons are communicating with an FBI phone, Michelle Fiore is right in the middle of the damn thing. It’s being broadcast through the net. I’m not good at links, but check out the Oregonian website.

I listened to some of it. The FBI negotiator is named Mark, Fiore is furiously demanding that she be allowed to the refuge. David Fry is threatening all kinds of bullshit if Mark doesn’t let her in there. She’s basically interfering with an FBI arrest. She should go to jail for this.

I took six years to get through school. They sent me home twice, and I ended up graduating with a 2.50 G.P.A. And, shit, I was as lucky as hell. Lucky because my father ran one of the libraries at school, so was on the faculty–though he never had to step in and advocate for me–and because the school itself committed itself to its students. That was between 1986 and 1992. I assume it’s still the same today, since, well, schools are meant to be, you know, schools, and not some Wall Street counting house. Shit. I bet this asshole isn’t long for the job, and good riddance.

This notion that “education should be run like a business” simply galls me. Education is a public good that benefits everyone. Injecting the profit motive into a public good, just corrupts and poisons the well for everyone – it diminishes the outcomes. Robert Kuttner wrote a great book several years ago that asked the essential question, “Should Everything Be for Sale?” In the case of education, the answer is an unequivocal “No”!

@SFAW: That’s the attorney representing Ammon Bundy. He and his firm are currently under investigation for ethical violations in going to the refuge during the occupation and providing guidance on what they felt the occupiers could do that was and was not legal. Depending on how the complaint to the Oregon judicial ethics committee turns out, there’s a chance they themselves could be indicted as co-conspirators.

As for Fiore, she and Cliven Bundy were supposed to travel to the refuge and meet with the four holdouts tomorrow. That was their announced plan. There is no way the FBI would allow either of them in, and if they managed to find a way in, there is no way the FBI would allow them out. In the case of Fiore, she had no immunity for anything she is doing as part of her job as a state legislator. Because what she’s doing is 1) outside of those duties, 2) not being conducted within her state’s actual legislature, and 3) she’s not a legislator in Oregon, so she can’t even claim constituent representation or service. If she decides to fully inject herself into this, even if she isn’t arrested, she is going to place incredible pressure on the Nevada GOP legislative leadership to expel her. Right now Jon Ralston is probably happy as a clam in mud that he now has material for his reporting for months and he doesn’t have to do any hard work to get it.

Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Because the dead people at Ruby Ridge and Waco- including children- make for more gruesome political theater than do pepper-sprayed protesters.

There’s a reason that the brutal, often fatal treatment of Civil Rights demonstrators worked so effectively in accomplishing the goals of the movement. Kent State was more effective in ending US involvement the Vietnam War than all of the protests that preceded it.
