Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

We still have time to mess this up!

Why Do They Do This?

This post is in: I Can No Longer Rationally Discuss The Clinton Campaign

FacebookTweetEmail

This is the kind of thing that just makes me want to pull my hair out:

After setting up an impressive team of Nevada veterans, including some noteworthy Hispanic operatives, Hillary Clinton arrived in May to lay down a marker on immigration reform.

She met with DREAMERs, who endorsed her last week. She talked a better game on executive orders than President Obama. Her team exuded confidence, especially since Bernie Sanders didn’t even have an organization in Nevada.

That was then.

After the disaster in snow-white New Hampshire and the near-death experience in colorless Iowa, Team Clinton suddenly was trying to make Nevada sound as if its rainbow of voters did not exist.

“There’s going to be a narrowing in both places (South Carolina and Nevada) — we’re clear-eyed about that,” Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon told NBC’s Chuck Todd, as reported by BuzzFeed’s Ruby Cramer. “There’s an important Hispanic element to the Democratic caucus in Nevada. But it’s still a state that is 80 percent white voters. You have a caucus-style format, and he’ll have the momentum coming out of New Hampshire presumably, so there’s a lot of reasons he should do well.”

***

The facts:

Nevada’s Hispanic population is about 27 percent. African-Americans and Asian/Pacific Islanders make up; almost 10 percent. That is, nearly half of the state’s population is made up of minorities.

The Democratic caucus population was 35 percent minority in 2008, according to exit polls, and is expected to be as high as 40 percent in 2016, according to local Democratic sources. This is nothing like the 90 percent white caucus participation in Iowa, for instance.

This is the kind of thing that is just maddening. It’s the massagers and the spinners and the Baghdad Bobesque aspect of the circles around Clinton that just make me (at least) mental.

Watch this video:

That woman right there on stage does not need the idiots who keep doing this shit to keep dragging her down. They’re killing her.

But Hillary, truth be told, just isn’t a very gifted politician. And while Sanders focuses relentlessly on the big themes that preoccupy voters, Clinton’s campaign feels like it’s all about her — her résumé, her mettle, her 25 years of suffering through the indignities of public service. “I’m with her” is the slogan for a campaign that seems to signify nothing beyond the joyless accretion of personal loyalties.

I don’t think Ralston has enough clout with corporate media to damage HRC with his stuff, he is crude and rude and impertinent with VSP political celebrities.

But maybe the problem is what Ralston wrote at the end of this local muckracker bulletin:
” I don’t smell a rat. I smell something much more pungent from the Clinton campaign: fear.”

HRC is channeling her inner Rubio, and panicking about the fact that the NH primary turned out exactly as predicted?

Or Ralston is blowing something way out of proportion because he needed some HRC filler to keep his local fans tuned in?

Bernie Sanders believes he can do a better job at leadership than President Barack Obama, a statement that drew a quick rebuke from Hillary Clinton’s campaign as she and the Vermont senator ramp up their brawl in the Democratic presidential primary.

Sanders, in an interview with MSNBC that will air Thursday night, said he did not believe Obama had closed a gap between Congress and the American people. “What presidential leadership is about is closing that gap,” Sanders said.

Sanders’ words landed like a bomb in Clinton-land, where a spokesman for Obama’s former secretary of state said lecturing the president on leadership was “absurd.”

    Brian Fallon @brianefallon

The idea of Bernie Sanders, who has little to show for his 25 years in Congress, giving leadership lectures to President Obama is absurd.

@Jasmine Bleach: Kinda hard to square these two sets of statistics. If we are to take Pew’s 15% latino turn out vs. 25% of overall population, then the remaining 25% of non-white turnout from only 10% of the overall population.

In other words, we need to believe that Latinos turn out is drastically under proportion, while non-Latino, non-white turnout is drastically over proportion.

I just think it’s expectation setting so fair game.

I do wonder about where they’re going with this argument though.

The argument in Iowa was Iowa isn’t representative of the national Party because it’s so white and so liberal. Okay, so Clinton has strong AA and Latino support so while that isn’t really an explanation for Iowa, is it as explanation for why she might be stronger in other states. Saying Nevada is 80% white, however, shifts that a little.

Is she saying she has an actual disadvantage with white voters v Bernie Sanders? She has to be, right? Because if he has a disadvantage with Latino voters (or she has an advantage) and they’re 20% that leaves 80% where each candidate has an equal chance, which should still give her a substantially better than even shot. She starts with an advantage with 20% OR he starts with an disadvantage with 20%, they split the remaining 80% white where the two candidates have an even chance.

Last September the CBC held their annual dinner. President Obama was the keynote speaker. Hillary Clinton attended. Joe Biden attended.

Guess who was a no-show. It was the same guy who said racism is over 3 months after the Ferguson murder.

Well, here’s what you got. What you got is an African-American president, and the African-American community is very, very proud that this country has overcome racism and voted for him for president. And that’s kind of natural. You’ve got a situation where the Republican Party has been strongly anti-immigration, and you’ve got a Hispanic community which is looking to the Democrats for help.

But that’s not important. You should not be basing your politics based on your color. What you should be basing your politics on is, how is your family doing?

    Tell it to James Blake.

Obama’s taken quite a bit of Wall Street money, and who defines the “status quo” better than the two-term sitting President? I think what’s confusing is that, while his platform makes perfect sense for an Independent, it’s awkward for someone running as a card-carrying member of the Democratic Party. This is what it would look like if Jill Stein suddenly became a Dem.

How are the “big guns” of the party going to campaign for him if he wins the nom? Who are his surrogates going to be? No current Dems can plausibly make the case he makes, because the Democratic party isn’t really revolution-based. Some might make the case that it should be, but that function has traditionally been filled by parties farther to our left.

Washington, DC – Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) and Aviation Subcommittee Chairman Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ) today introduced the Aviation Innovation, Reform, and Reauthorization (AIRR) Act, legislation that establishes an independent, not-for-profit corporation, outside of the federal government, to modernize and provide U.S. air traffic control (ATC) services.

our system is incredibly inefficient, and it will only get worse as passenger levels grow and as the FAA falls further behind in modernizing the system. Furthermore, the FAA’s overly bureaucratic certification processes are handicapping American companies and causing us to fall behind our competition.

I don’t think Sanders is “the bigger problem” in anything because I think Clinton will be the nominee. I’m not convinced there’s a “Sanders Revolution” but I think they have the perfect right to try to start one.

It doesn’t matter that much. If she wins no one will care that she felt she was at a disadvantage with white voters (or something!) versus Bernie Sanders but I have just never heard any candidate make this argument before in a Dem primary, including Obama, who is black :)

@MomSense: “Bernie bros” and not “Obama boys” (the term used by the Clinton campaign in 2008)? Lewis endorsed Hillary in 2008 over Obama. When Obama kicked butt in the South he then switched to Obama. In October last year Lewis endorsed Hillary. Today he again endorsed Hillary, this time using the CBCPAC as his official platform (not to be confused with the CBC).

In dissing Sanders, Lewis said that he never saw Sanders at any civil rights march, but he saw Bill and Hill.

Unfortunately, there is a picture of Lewis marching with Dr. King. Three heads behind MLK is Bernie Sanders. Also, Bill and Hill weren’t there. Hillary was a Goldwater Girl at the time and Bill was chasing skirts somewhere.

In endorsing Clinton Lewis unfortunately proved the worth of his endorsement.

@different-church-lady: On July 22, 2014 on “Meet The Press” SOS Kerry said that the US had absolute proof of the exact location where the BUK missile that knocked out MH17 was fired from. So far the US has not turned over this evidence to anyone, including the Dutch investigation.

The idea of the Russians or the rebels shooting down the airliner has generated reams of negative propaganda. It has been the basis for a number political actions against Russia. It took Americans years to figure out that the Gulf of Tonkin incident was a staged event to justify the increase in the Vietnam War. Judith Miller of the NYTimes lied to Americans about WMDs, which was used as justification for the invasion of Iraq. I recognized the same patterns in the MH17 story as the past lies from such examples as I’ve offered.

It’s been about a year and a half now since Kerry claimed to have evidence. We live in a society where we accept the government lying to us. I demand proof. different-church-lady, you can choose your level of proof for moving us into this new Cold War.

@sparrow: Well, I don’t know where you’re going with that, but I obviously didn’t land the parallel.

Gamergate unleashed some atrocious abuse of women and POCs in the gaming world. I am not sure how much of it was actually inherent in the movement, but I am sure there were a fair number (and I could believe a majority) that were pure in their intent. But a failure to reign in the misogynists and racists has made the brand toxic.

Failure to police the brand has consequences in meat space, and it has consequences in cyberspace, as well. , the potential for ratf**ckery is kinda obvious. I don’t think you can turn a blind eye to it.

@Gin & Tonic: Okay, maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t. But Sanders has had plenty of evidence about his participation in the civil rights movement. Lewis’ comment was absurd, and he apparently ticked off Ellison with his endorsement. Also, the endorsement from Lewis was on behalf of CBCPAC, not the CBC. And in case anyone forgot, John Lewis endorsed Clinton in early October of last year.

I marched with the Black Panthers in downtown Newark on election day 1968. I didn’t see Sanders or Lewis there.

@magurakurin: Or maybe they prefer their candidate. Radical, I know.

I honestly think that the Lewis attack on Sanders was a low blow, implying that he was a liar, and I say this as someone who’s admired him for his lifes’ work. It’s hardly surprising that young people who didn’t know his history would react badly to him calling their preferred candidate a liar on paper-thin grounds, and to use this as a weapon to attack all of them is obnoxious. The people complaining here intensely dislike Sanders, have apparent contempt for his supporters, and nothing that they could do would please them. So forgive me, perhaps, if I’m not outraged.

@Marc: The Sanders’ camp is trying to paint the CBC PAC endorsement as another example of a big, establishment political machine going against the wishes of its grass roots members. It’s fucking silly. The CBC PAC is the political arm of a group of 46 men and women. 36 of which have openly endorsed Clinton and one who surely will either before South Carolina or after. Keith Ellison is angry because he is basically alone in his endorsement of Sanders. The whining about this looks really, really bad. It doesn’t to you, great.

@Bob In Portland: You see, this is the thing.

You can’t say young women are going to hell if they don’t support Hillary, and get to have that accepted as just one of the facts going forward.

You can’t say you never saw Bernie at any civil rights march but you saw the Clintons, when there’s photo evidence of you marching with King and the same photo shows Bernie Sanders marching with you, and the Clintons are not in the picture… and have that accepted as one of the facts going forward.

You can’t DO a narrative of ‘he says he never saw Bernie at any civil rights march’ if the photo shows Bernie also in the same frame! You can’t do that narrative.

    February 12, 2016 at 9:43 am

@FlipYrWhig: They’re talking about a different picture of ‘Bernie’ standing talking to a civil-rights event. Because in the world, there’s more than one picture, which is why I said ‘marching’.

You see, this is the problem. You can’t simply make up shit and have it accepted as truth that’s not allowed to be questioned. It’s a dishonesty problem and it’s getting worse and from where I’m standing it looks a lot like Hillary joining the republicans in the ‘say anything’ race.

I don’t like that, and I don’t remember any of you hammering away on this talking point until you had Lewis saying something that is possibly true (because I guess if you’re making civil rights marches back then, white people joining you is not interesting at all, not worthy of notice) but seriously misleading if not outright dishonest.

The rest is just a hype machine cranking up to argue about what the definition of is, is.

    Snopes says this:

Sanders’ involvement was brief and localized, his sacrifices limited to one arrest for protesting and a bad GPA from neglecting his studies. But Sanders was, in his own right, an active participant in the movement during his three years at the University of Chicago.

Although Sanders did attend the 1963 March on Washington, at which Lewis spoke, most of his work was in and around Hyde Park, where he became involved with the campus chapter of CORE [Congress of Racial Equality] shortly after transferring from Brooklyn College in 1961. During Sanders’ first year in Chicago, a group of apartment-hunting white and black students had discovered that off-campus buildings owned by the university were refusing to rent to black students, in violation of the school’s policies. CORE organized a 15-day sit-in at the administration building, which Sanders helped lead. The protest ended when George Beadle, the university’s president, agreed to form a commission to study the school’s housing policies.

That spring, with Sanders as its chairman, the university chapter of CORE merged with the university chapter of SNCC [Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee]. Sanders announced plans to take the fight to the city of Chicago, and in the fall of 1962 he followed through, organizing picketers at a Howard Johnson in Cicero. Sanders told the Chicago Maroon, the student newspaper, that he wanted to keep the pressure on the restaurant chain after the arrest of 12 CORE demonstrators in North Carolina for trying to eat at a Howard Johnson there.

Sanders left his leadership role at the organization not long afterward; his grades suffered so much from his activism that a dean asked him to take some time off from school. But he continued his activism with CORE and SNCC. In August of 1963, not long after returning to Chicago from the March on Washington, Sanders was charged with resisting arrest after protesting segregation at a school on the city’s South Side. He was later fined $25, according to the Chicago Tribune.

ETA And if your campaign and its supporters have gotten to a place where they need to question the motives of JOHN FREAKIN’ LEWIS, consider that you have lost the plot.

ETA2 Just say that Bernie Sanders was fighting like hell for the civil rights movement 50 years ago and still believes in its vision today. Why would that be so hard? Why does there have to be so much hype surrounding every damn thing he’s ever done?

    February 12, 2016 at 4:45 pm

Danny Lyon on his photographs as talked about on Snopes:

“In 1962 and the spring of 1963 I was the student photographer at the University of Chicago, making pictures for the yearbook, the Alumni Magazine and the student paper, The Maroon. By the summer of 1962 I had taken my camera into the deep South, and become the first photographer for SNCC.

“That winter at the University of Chicago, there was a sit-in inside the administration building protesting discrimination against blacks in university owned housing. I went to it with a CORE activist and friend. The sit in was in a crowded hallway, blocking the entrance to the office of Dr. George Beadle, the chancellor.

“I took the photograph of Bernie Sanders speaking to his fellow CORE members at that sit-in. Bob McNamara, a close friend and CORE activist, is in the very corner next to me in the picture. Across the room from me is another campus photographer named Wexler, who taught me how to develop film.

“I photographed Bernie a second time after he got a haircut, as he appeared next to the noble laureate and chancellor Dr. George Beadle. Time Magazine is now claiming it is not Bernie in the picture but someone else. It is Bernie, and it is proof of his very early dedication to justice for African Americans. The CORE sit-in that Bernie helped lead was the first civil rights sit-in to take place in the North.”

There would be no point debunking stuff that wasn’t intentional lies. As I thought, the attempt to write our guy out of history and not only claim he wasn’t there, but that he was making it up, is lies.
