Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

I really should read my own blog.

I think the worst concert I saw back in the ’70s was Jethro Tull. Jethro Dull, more like. They had some good music, but they sucked and blew that night.

But in the spirit of the thread I will offer something from a ’70s concert that was excellent: B.B. King, “The Thrill Is Gone.”

Bonnie Raitt opened for him and joined him at the end of his set. She did a great version of “Everybody’s Cryin’ Mercy.”

@jacy: In December 2008 I was scheduled to have a meeting with a budget examiner from OMB. I got there, and he told me he had to cut the meeting short – he had won the office lottery to go to the White House Christmas party for the EOP staff. He was all dressed up for the occasion, including a really sharp-looking set of Lego cufflinks and tie clip.

So there is another use you can put the leftover Legos to.

It’s woofy cold here in NoVa: 25° now and going down to 17° overnight. Then only 20° tomorrow and 10° Saturday night. I’m driving to Rehoboth Beach tomorrow morning, but it’s about the same there. Anyway, overnighter at the beach with good friends, probably an excellent meal or two in there somewhere. And I always like getting out on the road.

We haven’t had snow in weeks – can see it on the mountains but all the streets and stuff are clear – and its not predicted to be below freezing for a while (snow keeps hovering in the 10 day forcast but it doesn’t arrive – just rain and a little sleet). Bears have been seen walking around.

Last Saturday night I was listening to the ’60s channel on SiriusXM while I was out and about, and I got hooked into Peter Noone’s show, because quite often he tells genuinely funny and interesting stories about Herman’s Hermits and the ’60s music scene. He was on some long story about a night out clubbing with a “leggy model bird” who he suspected was using him to get into places and would jettison him as soon as she got within range of Mick Jagger. He told it well, with dry and self-deprecating wit. Kept repeating the phrase “leggy model bird,” which stuck in my head all week.

    My Republican candidate deathwatch:

    Loose Cannon: Trump

    Jackhole: Cruz

Damp Squibs of the Establishment: Bush, Christie, Gilmore, Graham, Jindal, Kasich, Pataki, Perry, Rubio, Walker

Kooks and Wowsers: Carson, Fiorina, Huckabee, Paul, Santorum

Carson, the last Kook, and the remaining DSEs are all fading fast. Carson’s done what he came to do, i.e. his brand-building project. The DSEs are clinging to a faint hope that both Loose Cannon and Jackhole will spontaneously combust and hand one of them the nom, but this seems unlikely to me. It’s now a race between two candidates whom the party establishment despises, and whom it fears can’t win in November.

Unless Loose Cannon and Jackhole do indeed both spontaneously combust, I don’t expect any more surprises. Indeed, I wouldn’t be surprised anymore to see the ultimate Republican nightmare 2016 ticket: Trump/Cruz.

Trump will probably put Sanders on the ticket.

They both oppose immigration reform. They both wanted to throw the first Black president out of office in 2012. And Sanders insists Trump’s white working class base are really Sanders voters.

    Match made in heaven Queens/Brooklyn.

I think Trump would pick Ivanka for VP, she was on the Apprentice the one time I watched a couple of minutes of because I had lost the remote in the cushions.

    @Mary G:
That’s as good a VP choice as any for Trump as any other, and as rational a reason as I’ve ever come across.

@TheMightyTrowel: Good for you :) My animals are all either very old (the 17-year-old Pomeranian), or heading that way – 3 cats that are now 13. I’ve been hankering for a new, younger pet, but I just can’t right now. Have fun!

@Amir Khalid: And he’d really love to fuck her(well, if he wasn’t married and she wasn’t his daughter). OK, now I feel a sudden need for a shower.

ETA: I’m not really all that sure the being married part would be that great an obstacle for THE DONALD. Now I really need a shower.

@Steeplejack: Saw Ringo Starr and his all Starr band this past October. He knows his limits, put on a good show. His backup band had former members of Toto and Santana. While Ringo would take a break, we’d get a couple of songs like “Rosanna” and “Africa” or “Black Magic Woman”. Sounded bang on. It was a hockey arena in a small city, about 90% full. @Calouste: Cruz/Trump would be a possibility. Trump isn’t the sort that likes to work as hard as a President needs to but it gives him all the glory, the access-all-areas ticket, the use of the Presidential jets and all that entails.

@benw: Crest of a Knave was a much better album than …And Justice for All. Not even really close, Metallica started their long ugly slide into self-parody with that album. Speaking as a huge fan of their previous albums.

They shouldn’t really have been in the same category though, “Hard” Rock and Metal are too dissimilar.

Speaking of Jethro Tull, they hold the distinction of performing one of the best AND one of the worst concerts I’ve ever been to. I caught the “A Little Light Music” tour in the early 90s at the Orpheum in Boston. It was set up as two shows, an acoustic performance, an intermission, and then a traditional electrified show. So many great songs. Fantastic. Saw them a few years later and >YAWN<. Even back then, even at the great show, Ian's voice had suffered a lot from age.

@TheMightyTrowel: I couldn’t stop smiling. I felt that way when I brought home my current pair from the humane society. Still wondering who would ever have let them go. Brunswick and Deja vu wave paws at Gambit and Storm ( great name choices!)
