Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

No one could have predicted…

Let there be snark.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Let’s finish the job.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Open Thread: Yet Another GOP Debate Tonight

by Anne Laurie|  February 13, 20164:38 pm| 80 Comments

This post is in: Election 2016, Open Threads, Republicans in Disarray!

This time on CBS:

… This will be the last debate before South Carolina’s Republican primary on Feb. 20, and it will take place at the Peace Center in Greenville, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET…

“Face the Nation” host and CBS News political director John Dickerson will serve as the main moderator for the debate. He will be joined by two panelists: CBS News chief White House correspondent Major Garrett and The Wall Street Journal’s Kimberly Strassel.

CBS News will offer multi-platform coverage of the debate, with extensive coverage before, during, and after the debate via CBSN, the network’s 24/7 digital streaming news service…

Not sure I can stand to watch another one of these clown shows, especially with Major Garrett smarming up the audio.

Fans of political bloodshed will have noted that South Carolina has a reputation to uphold, although I doubt CBS will allow the locals much traction…

I think the irony in that last tweet about the civility of South Carolina politics didn't fully register.

What could possibly be learned from watching this? That the GOP candidates are crazy, hateful and just plain bad? Which shouldn’t have been very hard to figure out long ago. That the closest person they have to an actual human is Kasich and he’s horrible?

Save yourself the brain cells and just loath them now.

It was striking me this morning when I heard there was yet another debate tonight how much NASCAR republicans are running the party now. A lot of people here are aware of the shared love of opera between Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Scalia died today at a ranch in Texas. I was raised not to speak ill of people who can no longer speak back, so I will just say that the music world will surely miss a devoted operaphile. And I’m sure Justice Ginsburg will miss her seat mate at performances.
