My aunt sent this to me yesterday and just made my day. I couldn’t wait to share it with you. (And I’m hoping I’m not repeating something that’s been posted previously because I’m nothing if not always behind on current memes)
Consider this your mid-morning open thread.

I haven’t seen it before– and, fwiw, being a week or two behind the BJ Zeitgeist isn’t such a bad thing. E.g., there won’t be any more need for intimate relationships with electrical sockets.

I read this New Yorker article this morning. There was one sentence I misread as, “He [Rubio] condones domestic violence and torture.”
I was halfway through the next sentence before I thought I better reread that. It actually reads “He condones domestic violence and torture.” It says something about the GOP candidates and my view of them that my original misreading didn’t raise immediate red flags.
SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel
@Eric S.:
I suspect one of those “condones” should be “condemns,” but I’m not sure which one you need to change.
MattF
@SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel: No, the second ‘domestic violence’ should be ‘domestic surveillance’.

He’s not kidding about that wall. I spend a lot of time working in Ontario. And a lot of work keeping my eligibility to cross the border up to date. Mexico, Germany, Holland, France: no problem. Here’s a stamp for your passport and have a nice day. But Canada’s looking for trouble in every car from the US. I understand why: a lot of us live right on the border and if we could we’d take all of their jobs when the unemployment rate went up. But why does this dictate that they have to know the full name, birthdate, residence, occupation, marital status and legal history of every member of my family so I can go fix a machine at a GM plant? If good fences make good neighbors, Canada wants to be the best neighbor ever.

The Archdiocese of St Louis is another blemish on that cities reputation, and Archbishop Carlson in an effort to up his game to compete with the previous Most High Holy Carbuncle Raymon Burke, he recently said in a letter to parishes,
Oh the horror...
I completely agree with this. May I suggest atheism?
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@OzarkHillbilly: I’m sure all the Republicans (and pundits) who told the Pope to stick to his beads will also tell Mr Burke to stay out of the Girl Scouts’ business.

Strictly FYI, but by the rules of the proportional allotment of R delegates in SC…
…Trump receives 100% of ’em, all 50.
Ultraviolet Thunder
@OzarkHillbilly:
That would ultimately solve this problem. Three colleagues live as near as I do to the border. Two of them have (‘minor’, they say) weapons violations on their records, and Canadian Immigration won’t issue them work visas. That leaves the whole Canada workload for me and one other guy, while the ineligible guys get to jet south in the winter and do jobs in the warm southern states. Classic reversed incentive: break the rules and get exempted from jobs nobody wants to do.

You mean my cat isn’t really stealing my thoughts?
Ultraviolet Thunder
@FlyingToaster:
I’m not surprised. Crossing the border back to the US is no picnic for me either. I’ve heard from Canadian colleagues that Homeland Security makes them jump through hoops.

@Ultraviolet Thunder: I think it has more to do with bringing illegal guns to Canada from USA.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@NotMax: I unmuted MSNBC just long enough to hear Marco sound for all the world like he was declaring victory by barely squeaking in to second place ten points behind the guy who’s about to start beating him like a rented mule. You think Cruz will give Trump permission to run that commercial that shows Marco and Obama saying the exact same things about the Gang of Eight immigration bill?
scav
@OzarkHillbilly: Unfortunately, yes. I was rather putting more of an emphasis on the wholes rather tha. specific individuals, and assuming the solid benefit was on the side of the GS and would leave the Catholic Hierarchy to posit their own net gain.

The American bishops think they are Catholicism, its sole definition and (as a group) decider. What the Pope, the lower church hierarchy, the congregation, and the rest of the Catholic world think is irrelevant. What they care about is punishing sex, and so in America that is all the Catholic Church cares about.
Ultraviolet Thunder
@Anya:
But they’re very strict about past behavior. A DUI in the US blocks you from entering Canada for 5 years. It’s not like they’re worried we’ll bring in booze. And one colleague just had an expired Cook County firearms owner card in his wallet when he was stopped for a traffic offense in Illinois. Even having that on his record bans him from Canada.
I need to get off this pet peeve of mine. Maybe Ontario won’t be freezing next weekend when I have to go work north of Buffalo.
beltane
@Ultraviolet Thunder: When I recently crossed the border to fly out of Montreal, the Canadian border patrol asked if I was carrying any firearms in my vehicle. I can’t blame them for being concerned about this.
As for DUIs, they are considered to be very serious criminal offences in almost every developed country other than the US. It’s not Canada that’s weird in this respect, it’s we who are “special”.

Nexus is a good plan, and it would get me through more quickly. I’m spending a few days next month updating my visa application so I might as well do the Nexus paperwork as well. I can probably expense the fees because it’s for work. The Nexus lane at the bridge sure seems to move faster.
It’s an odd contrast with entering Mexico. No visa required, no inspection and no questions. Just hand them a form on entry, take the part they tear off and keep moving. And it’s not like Mexico doesn’t have laws against DUI and firearms use.
Just One More Canuck
@Ultraviolet Thunder: Sitting on this side of the border, I’m kind of glad the Border Services are doing such a good job. It may delay people for a few minutes, but I’m ok with that

It’s just my personal beef about a work situation. I put 27,000 miles on my work vehicle in 2015, a lot of it on the 401 and 402. Working in Canada from MI is a hassle that’s mostly not Canada’s fault.
It’s easier to get into Mexico and that’s a benefit but I appreciate a great deal the benefit of being safe when I’m in Canada. Something I can take for granted in Ontario and most certainly NOT in Sonora or Nuevo Leon.

I am recovering from my shock of watching Reliable Sources on CNN. Brian Stelter interviewed Roger Stone who claimed Trump’s tweet about how POTUS would’ve attended Scalia’s funeral if it was held in a mosque was linked to Trump’s stand on Islamic terrorism (not sure if he said fandamantalism). The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. The recent actions of the Tea Party are prompting an exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they’ll soon be required to hunt, pray, and to agree with Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck.
Canadian border farmers say it’s not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal-rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night. “I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn,” said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield , whose acreage borders North Dakota . The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I didn’t have any, he left before I even got a chance to show him my screenplay, eh?”
In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them. He then installed loudspeakers that blared Rush Limbaugh across the fields. “Not real effective,” he said. “The liberals still got through and Rush annoyed the cows so much that they wouldn’t give any milk.”
Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons and drive them across the border where they are simply left to fend for themselves.”

Election officials said the number of Republicans who submitted absentee ballots more than doubled the number received during the presidential primary in 2008, and overall it was reported that more than 730,000 voters participated in the first-in-the-South primary this election cycle.
South Carolina GOP Chairman Matt Moore praised the record-breaking turnout on Twitter Saturday evening. According to Moore, 603,000 South Carolina residents voted in the 2012 Republican primary. Both Iowa and New Hampshire also attracted a greater number of voters this year than in previous presidential elections.

@Cacti: If it had made any difference it would have been a good strategy. He’ll have won his home state and two states that border it. He had to roll the dice.

The only explanation I can see for Sanders’s single-payer push is that he’ll negotiate it away for a public option, which wouldn’t be bad. (And to be honest I’d prefer a public option to single payer right now — the biggest driver of costs is the hospitals and drug companies, and reforming the insurance end of the spectrum isn’t really the thing to focus on right now.) That wouldn’t be bad. But both seem like non-starters until there are 60 dems in the senate again.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@FlipYrWhig: somebody here told me last week that President Bernie would be willing and able to play some hardball that Obama (and Hillary) couldn’t or wouldn’t. I asked for an explanation and was told it’s too complicated to explain.

@BR:
Negotiate it away how? In order to negotiate it, there needs to be some perception that either the public demands it or that one branch of congress will/has passed it.
I don’t see how any of that happens. This is why there’s been zero negotiation on repealing Obamacare – there’s nothing to negotiate when nobody questions that Obama would just veto it dead. There’s no risk of it being passed, so there’s no negotiation.
