Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Let’s finish the job.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

“Cheese and Kraken paired together for the appetizer trial.”

This blog will pay for itself.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Faunasphere: Zaftig Felines Edition

by Hillary Rettig|  February 24, 20162:00 pm| 91 Comments

This post is in: Faunasphere, Nature, Vegan

Dear Juicers, Animal issues seem to be more in the news than ever before. Below is this week’s sampling. Let us know what you think of any of the below items, and please feel free to add any faunasphere-related news of your own in the comments. – Hillary

  • Gotcher vegan Girl Scout cookies right here.
  • Wonderful! Cat and dog deaths down and adoptions up due to increased socializing, mobile adoption vans, pet food pantries, and other New York City shelter reforms.
  • Good laws! Minneapolis City Council votes to ban cruel elephant bullhooks and Tempe, AZ, becomes the 120th U.S. locality to ban the sale of puppies in pet stores. Meanwhile, Honduras becomes one of the first countries in Latin America to penalize animal cruelty with jail time.
  • Tyson Foods: a mega-polluter.
  • Photo of fur farmed fox by Jo-Anne McArthur / The Ghosts in Our Machine. Used with permission.
Photo of fur farmed fox by Jo-Anne McArthur / The Ghosts in Our Machine. Used with permission.

“…whose lives and souls are destroyed by human excess.” Fascinating Psychology Today interview with Jo-Anne McArthur, considered by many the foremost photojournalist of animal exploitation.

  • Noted animal activist Brigitte Bardot (yes, that Brigitte Bardot) asks that you sign her petition protesting the plight of the “galgos,” the approximately 50,000 Spanish greyhounds who, at the end of each hunting season, are killed, often in sadistic ways, by their owners.
  • Incredibly moving, and a balm to those of us who have lost a canine loved one: a dog’s letter to his guardian on his last day.
  • Good news for the orangutans and everyone else: Borneo sets aside 168,000 acres of rain forest as a wildlife preserve.
  • Werebear may weigh in: research sez fat cats won’t hate you if you force them to diet.
  • There will come a day when no reasonable person would ask a child to lovingly raise and nurture an animal only to send him off to slaughter. “Known as the Trail of Tears, the dirt-floor tunnel of the Richardson-Bass Building is where the youngsters say goodbye to their livestock. While some of the youth are stern-faced and business-like, others cry openly….Such was the case with Kendyll, who hugged Oatmeal and kissed the top of his head.”
  • More Federal welfare for cattlemen: the annual Yellowstone bison “cull.” The stated reason is to prevent the bison from transmitting brucellosis to cattle, which scientists say has never actually happened. The more likely explanation: to clear grazing land for cattle. Cost to taxpayers of this program since 2000: $50 million.
  • Trader Joe’s and BJ’s announce moves to 100% cage free eggs. Cage-free /= cruelty-free, but it’s a great first step.

How about it Juicers? Can we at least agree that zaftig felines >>> human fat cats?

When Grown Ups Are In Charge

This post is in: Activist Judges!, Best President Ever, Republican Venality, OBAMA IS WORSE THAN BUSH HE SOLD US OUT!!, Peak Wingnut Was a Lie!, The Failed Obama Administration (Only Took Two Weeks)

Here’s President Obama, writing in SCOTUSblog* on what he’ll look for in a Supreme Court nominee (h/t Washington Monthly):

First and foremost, the person I appoint will be eminently qualified.  He or she will have an independent mind, rigorous intellect, impeccable credentials, and a record of excellence and integrity.  I’m looking for a mastery of the law, with an ability to hone in on the key issues before the Court, and provide clear answers to complex legal questions.

Second, the person I appoint will be someone who recognizes the limits of the judiciary’s role; who understands that a judge’s job is to interpret the law, not make the law.  I seek judges who approach decisions without any particular ideology or agenda, but rather a commitment to impartial justice, a respect for precedent, and a determination to faithfully apply the law to the facts at hand.

But I’m also mindful that there will be cases that reach the Supreme Court in which the law is not clear.  There will be cases in which a judge’s analysis necessarily will be shaped by his or her own perspective, ethics, and judgment.  That’s why the third quality I seek in a judge is a keen understanding that justice is not about abstract legal theory, nor some footnote in a dusty casebook.  It’s the kind of life experience earned outside the classroom and the courtroom; experience that suggests he or she views the law not only as an intellectual exercise, but also grasps the way it affects the daily reality of people’s lives in a big, complicated democracy, and in rapidly changing times.  That, I believe, is an essential element for arriving at just decisions and fair outcomes.

Also — just in case you were worrying (I wasn’t and am not) that President Obama might take seriously for a moment any suggestion that he should punt on this choice, here’s all you need to know:

The Constitution vests in the President the power to appoint judges to the Supreme Court.  It’s a duty that I take seriously, and one that I will fulfill in the weeks ahead.

I will so miss this man.

Good news everybody

The CDC  has released their initial 2015 uninsured population counts.  Good news, for all residents of the US in the US through September 2015.  Remember, this percentage will go down a bit more as Montana and Alaska are expanding Medicaid and the 2016 Open Enrollment period pulled in more people.

CDC 2015 uninsured rate

These numbers are a bit lower than Gallup and other sources because this data set includes kids and the elderly.  Both of those groups tend to have a higher insurance rate because there are more government programs aimed at those two populations.  Working age adults have a slightly higher than national average uninsured rate.

The many ways to cover everyone

by David Anderson|  February 24, 20164:35 am| 29 Comments

This post is in: Anderson On Health Insurance, I Hate All of You

The  Commonwealth Foundation  puts out a great PDF every year on international health system comparisons.  Here is Table 1 which describes the many different ways industrial countries cover their citizens. There is no single way that works.  Each pathway in these countries evolved from pre-existing institutions and constraints.

Just keep that in mind when there is a discussion about means and end and how we should not confuse means with ends.

Long Late Night Open Thread: The GOP Caucus in Nevada, Now in Process

This post is in: Cruz-ifiction, Election 2016, Hail to the Hairpiece, Open Threads, Republican Stupidity, Republicans in Disarray!, Assholes

Just under 10 percent of Republicans have pre-registered, surpassing total caucus turnout (8%) in '12. 10% is new baseline for enthusiasm!

— Jon Ralston (@RalstonReports) February 23, 2016

Trump's Las Vegas rally tonight is planning for 10,000 people. Four years ago just 33,000 voted in the NV GOP caucus. Do the math.

— AlGiordano (@AlGiordano) February 23, 2016

So an Obama conspiracy theorist, a race-profiling sheriff and a bloviating billionaire walk into a state and… https://t.co/SEVtr1s04i

— Jon Ralston (@RalstonReports) February 23, 2016

(Deservedly) harsh things were said about the less-than-optimum Democratic caucus in Nevada, but it seems like the Repubs are determined wipe out all memories of last weekend through sheer force of inepiptitude/venality…

I don't know of any org less prepared to deal with unusually high turnout than NV GOP. Also, no org less equipped to deal w/low turnout.

Carolina Panthers: “Rubio Winners” of This Year’s Super Bowl

by Betty Cracker|  February 23, 20169:31 pm| 105 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity, Assholes, General Stupidity

I’m at my kid’s softball game tonight, so I’ll be relying on you crabby bastards to keep me informed of developments during the Clinton-Sanders town hall and GOP Nevada caucus results. Here’s CNN’s take on leading-from-behind media darling-in-waiting Rubio’s predicament:

The nights of Rubio selling third place as a win are over.

Since Jeb Bush dropped out of the Republican race Saturday night, Rubio has quickly worked to lock down the party’s establishment — picking up former Bush donors and releasing a cascade of endorsements from governors, senators and congressmen Monday.

Though Ohio Gov. John Kasich remains in the race, Rubio appears close to locking down the party’s more moderate and establishment types. It’s a testament to his own political talent, but also a recognition that if the GOP is to stop Trump from winning its nomination, it’s now or never.

Now, Rubio has to get voters to buy in.

So, to recap, no more free turns in the winner’s circle for the show/show/place pony, and getting voters to buy in — got it.

My kid’s softball team is possibly the worst in the county. But they’ll still be Rubio winners, even if it’s another double-digit loss.
