Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

In my day, never was longer.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

The revolution will be supervised.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Trump is really cornered on this off-the-record conversation. They’re trying to get him to release the recording. Trump responds by going off on tangents. And refuses to release the tapes. Not good optics.

Trump knows that OTR is potentially fatal, as does everyone else. Cruz and Rubio won’t let it go, but Donald won’t accede. Hillary’s team must be salivating at this stuff. Sunday TV and in commercials are where this stuff is really going to kill Trump, not the debate, which is just serving to show how much of a nerve it hits.

    @lamh36:

What OTR convo are we talking about? I missed the news about it?

Trump talked to some NYT reporters, and some people say that he reassured them he wasn’t really serious about that kick-out-the-Muslims-and-Mexicans stuff.

Cruz and Rubio have been blathering about that to other media outlets non-stop, partially to paint Trump as another lying billionaire. But mostly, I suspect, because shrieking RELEASE THE TRANSCRIPTS!!! has been such a go-to rallying cry against HRClinton — it comes naturally, and if it brackets Mr. NY Values with the Hildebeast in Repub voters’ tiny minds, all the better!

Holy crap. From the Guardian again:

Trump takes a question about an open letter from military leaders and intelligence figures including Michael Hayden warning that the military would refuse to carry out a President Trump’s order to torture terror suspects.

“They won’t refuse. They’re not going to refuse me. Believe me,” Trump says.

Then he says “we should go waterboarding and we go tougher.” He refers to “these animals over in the Middle East chopping off heads”.

Trump is pressed on whether the military could follow his orders to violate the Geneva conventions on the treatment of enemy combatants.

“I’m a leader,” Trump says. “If I say do it, they’re going to do it, that’s what leadership is about.”

I didn’t say it made sense, to us mostly-sane people. But yelling that Trump is secretly in cahoots with That Hillary Lady is probably the best weapon the other Repubs have against him, at this point.

What other contrasts do they have? ‘Vote for me, my lies aren’t quite so outrageous’? ‘I have more experience at that profession you despise people for being experienced at’? ‘Give me enough time, I’ll put on a bigger televised event than the professional reality show presenter’?

GOP primary voters keep telling us they want the biggest, shoutiest, most xenophobic misogynist bigot they can find. Rubio and even Cruz can’t compete with Trump on that. Here’s what Kim Jong Un actually said today about North Korea’s nuclear posture:

He said North Korea “must always be ready to fire our nuclear warheads at any time” because enemies were threatening the North’s survival.
“At an extreme time when the Americans… are urging war and disaster on other countries and people, the only way to defend our sovereignty and right to live is to bolster our nuclear capability,” he was quoted as saying.

    @Steve in the ATL:

It’s more that we have so little information about North Korea that we just don’t know. We can make some guesses about how much material they have.

They have set off four underground explosions, but that’s not the same as having a weapon. And the best guesses are that those explosions haven’t gone as planned. So extrapolating from that, my guess is that they don’t have anything they can put on a missile, although they might have one or two weapons they could put on a ship or a big airplane.
