Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

“A king is only a king if we bow down.” – Rev. William Barber

Come on, man.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

This really is a full service blog.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

This blog will pay for itself.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

How stupid are these people?

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

When I was faster i was always behind.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

No one could have predicted…

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

I've been thinking about what has happened. And I conclude the biggest factor is that Hillary Clinton learned how to listen. That's a BFD.

— AlGiordano (@AlGiordano) March 16, 2016

It's a big deal because my fellow New Yorker Donald doesn't get the "listening thing" and this is his greatest weakness.

— AlGiordano (@AlGiordano) March 16, 2016

Clinton supporters learned delegate math in 2008. Now they are burdened with passing down this math to Sanders supporters in 2016.

Hillary learns. That is absolutely clear to me. She has general liberal principles, but she does not stand still. That is a rare and wonderful trait in a politician. She learned a lot from her time in the Obama administration, and both her political strategy and her policies reflect it.

To me, the $64 question is whether Trump voters will have the patience to wait until November before they start rioting. If they start the fireworks at the convention, they’ll pretty much guarantee that he’ll lose in the general. And I think that even if he cruises to the nomination at this point, his fanatics will complain that the haters actually made delegates cast their votes before acclaiming King Donald as rightful Emperor of the World.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! If it’s not a total zoo, I’m taking the girls to an Irish pub for dinner tonight, where I will order corned beef, but they will probably get shepherds pie, because I’ve made that before. They missed the parades in Chicago (I’m a SouthSider, so two for us) and the green river. They were away at a Key club convention last weekend, so this is my only chance to give them a glimpse of the US version of St. Patrick’s.

You know what this reminds me of? That creepy pledge that the Kansas Republican Party demanded its members sign saying “I will at no point in the future find cause to transfer my party loyalties.”

As with everything else with Trump, there’s ample precedent for it in the Republican Party’s recent history, even though the official line remains that the Trump phenomenon just inexplicably appeared out of thin air less than a year ago.

@Barbara O’Brien: One big difference between your blog (where I sometimes lurk) and this one is that there are tons of sports fans here. They get into things to win, and Bernie does not look like that good a bet in the general. I think that’s most of what you’really seeing right now, up to and including the heckling (think ball fans booing the ump).

Personally, I’m skeptical about Hillary for some of the reasons you list but don’t see an alternative. So I’ll be canvassing, donating and the rest, all while hoping I’m going to proven wrong about the stuff I doubted.

@the Conster, la Citoyenne: This website is not your little club. Every day you post invective insinuating that Sanders and anyone who supports him (or who might like a more, rather than less, liberal country than the one we have now) is a racist. I am not a fan of Clinton for foreign and economic policy reasons (and also because she genuinely seems to like sucking up to Republicans and war criminals), but people like you make me think her presidency would be a terrible mistake.

The bigger lesson of 2008 was that you won’t win the Democratic nomination without the votes of Black people. This has been stated clearly by countless bloggers and pundits with supporting electoral data. Bernie knew (or should have known) this from very early on. Convincing Black voters to ditch HRC and vote for him should have been his primary goal and the focus of his campaign.
