Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

A consequence of cucumbers

Hot air and ill-informed banter

And both sides don’t have their campaign managers rough up protestors. Only Trump does that. One could go on and on – and that’s just today, in the last few minutes. Fournier is a discredited hack.

    Has Fournier (or anyone else) actually come out and praised “Shape of Earth: Opinions Differ”?

    I mean, of course it makes business sense, you don’t want to alienate the crucial flat-earther audience. Next thing you know they’ll be saying the whole mainstream media has a pro-round-earth bias, and that’s why they only listen to talk radio… but has anyone held it up as an ideal of reportage?

    @Doug!: @jacy: Ron Fumier sounds like a clown in dire need of being hit while walking down the street by a speeding dumptruck. And taking a long, insufficiently anesthetized time to die. And having his “health care” provider(s) charge him exorbitantly for its “services” (e.g., the $47,000 medevac charge recently reported over at GOS) while his “health insurance” provider(s) deny all claims. And having said “health care provider(s)” successfully sue his estate & take every penny of it.

    I never thought we would see gay rights mainstreamed.

    And I certainly never thought I would see an American President visit Cuba while still in office.

    I never thought that the Republicans would approve of these progressive and delightful events, and in fact they did everything in their power to prevent them, but President Obama has nonetheless prevailed, and with quiet dignity.

    I am very proud of him and I should think any Democratic candidate would want to run on “more of the same”.

    @Roger Moore: Funny you should mention that. For a time I considered buying a handgun as a deterrent to burglary (having been burglarized exactly once, 25 years ago). Not really interested in gunning down an intruder inside the house–bloodstains are hell to get out of carpet–but would rather they not come in at all.

    Then i realized that

    (1) If I didn’t let it be known that I had a gun, no potential burglar was going to be deterred from B&E until & unless I shot one down on the premises, and

    (2) Once it did become known, I’d have to carry it with me at all times–otherwise my house would be broken into within 10 minutes of the next time I left to steal the gun. And carry it prominently, otherwise I’d still come home to find the place tossed in search of it. And even then,

    (3) I’d probably be ambushed by a mugger the next time I came home in the dark night, again in order to steal the gun.

    That put an end to that idea right quick.

    @Uncle Cosmo:
    Not everyone gets the dichotomy of owning a gun. They want the power, don’t understand the responsibility. Or the real costs.
    Not sure why but this popped into my head upon reading your comment.
    One of the best lines in Mash, tv not movie, Radar to Frank Burns, “They steal because they are poor, it’s the only way for them to stay alive.” Of course the response was classic conservative, “They should get a job.”
    Conservatives don’t get that there is a greater level of responsibility, that of societal responsibility. That level that we have not towards ourselves but each other.

    @sharl: The Fournier Transform converts any argument into
    ‘both sides do it.’

    @catclub: Can we hope that there’s an Inverse Fournier Transform that provides actual information?

    Cheers,
    Scott.

    @I’mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet:
    No
    If there is anything Fournier involved in any formula the output is always bullshit. No way to fix that, it has a poison effect of every thing it touches.

    ETA It’s why he thinks that both sides are the same, every thing he touches turns to shit so everything in the world must be the same.

    You probably wouldn’t last long dive-bombing their comments. RW blogs tend to be trigger-happy with the banhammer. Its like they revel in purging the heretics.

    @patroclus: @patroclus: Well, Chuckles Todd said Harry Reid did the same thing in 2008 that Mitch McConnell is doing today, so there’s that (speaking of tumbrels). He then asked Reid 3 times why he blamed Republicans for wanting a justice sympathetic to them.

    Please. Fournier doesn’t actually believe both sides do it. It’s an argument. He’s a partisan Republican hack.

    Yes, there are two sides. Maybe more. Both or all sides do things. Not the same things, but things. Whether the different things done by different sides are equal in integrity, impact, magnitude, or respect for civil governance is, at best, an estimate and at worst an exercise in rationalizing. When finding the balance between the things different sides do becomes the primary goal, the only way to achieve it is to discount differences, and to do that, you have to distort the truth.

    Didn’t Fournier also tweet that he was the only objective person in political punditry? The guy is a delusional, clueless hack.

    I know this thread is dead, but I’ll tombstone this, and maybe link to it again in the days ahead. NYU’s Jay Rosen is not having the bothsiderism:

    “Depends on your point of view…” These are weasel words for political journalists:

    @catclub,
    @I’mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet:

    The presence of Four(n)ier Transform jokes here: most excellent
    The fact none occurred to me: humbling, and leaving me a bit remorseful

    But the excellence wins out…

    @Bobby Thomson:

    Bingo – you are correct.

    The only reason to say ‘both sides do it’ is if you can’t defend the side of the argument you are on.

    In all other cases, you claim superiority.
