Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

An almost top 10,000 blog!

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Second rate reporter says what?

Let’s finish the job.

This blog will pay for itself.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

DeSantis transforms Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself.

I’ve never understood this fear that Republicans have that a photo-op, or some other country’s propaganda/national pride, or conciliatory remarks (apologies) will weaken our nation in some way. They don’t have much faith in our country or Democratic values. Do they really think the United States is so fragile?

    Because they’re ridiculously insecure people.

You know that old study that said what women were most afraid of was that men would assault them, but what men were most afraid of was that women would laugh at them? The latter half of the equation is our modern right wing in a nutshell. Ridiculously insecure people, who use the political process and the apparatus of government to lash out and try to reestablish their own manliness-cred. (Of course, since the main source of their insecurity is the voice in their own head, there’s really no amount of lashing out that’ll satisfy them).

No, no, you don’t understand. Communist Cuba and all associated with it are clearly far far worse and a far far greater threat to US security than either the Soviet Union at its height or Communist China. That’s why we traded with the latter two and had to protect ourselves from the former.

Earlier, we had Glenn Reynolds blathering on about how David Brooks Created Donald Trump.

Now WaPo gives us What Republicans did 15 years ago to help create Donald Trump today.

Basically, trade deals with China. But this is kinda interesting.

The 2000 vote effectively unleashed a flood of outsourcing to China, which in turn exported trillions of dollars of cheap goods back to the United States. Over the next 10 years, economists have concluded, the expanded trade with China cost the United States at least 2 million jobs. It was the strongest force in an overall manufacturing decline that cost 5 million jobs. Those workers were typically men whose education stopped after high school, a group that has seen its wages fall by 15 percent after adjusting for inflation.

For blue-collar workers, the economic and political effects of permanent normal trade relations with China have swamped the effects of any other trade decision in the past 25 years. Economic evidence suggests the North American Free Trade Agreement, which passed on a bipartisan vote in 1993, did not cause anywhere near the same level of factory layoffs or wage losses — or any meaningful challenge to the GOP’s pro-trade orthodoxy in presidential nominations.
