    Eh, we forgive you ya rotten christ-killer!

    PBS ran a Rick Steves special on Easter through Europe. He covered several variations on the Passion Play but never mentioned the amounts of antisemitism present. Many of these plays, like the famous one in Oberammergau, came about as penance during the plague and went heavy on the “Its all the Jews fault!” stuff. I have heard that depending on the year some are still into that with other years downplaying that in favor of blaming the Romans. It all strikes me as odd; if you believe the Bible then Christs death was a necessity and a positive thing. If you are a believer then the roles of Pilate and the Jews should be celebrated for their furthering Gods grand plan.

    SyFy has been showing all the Chris Reeves Superman movies over this entire weekend.

    Watching them, you realize good acting really can trump the latest/greatest special effects.

    The special effects from the films don’t hold up, but the acting by Reeves et al in the at least the first 2 (I don’t hate the 3rd film with Richard Pryor, like some do) still holds up, IMHO

    @Schlemazel (parmesan rancor): Christ was a Jew. He preached a strong message of economic justice, against the rich and bankers. He was for peace, and told his followers to care for the weakest and sickest among us. He had a strong following of youth, but the powers of the time hated him and his message. Let’s face it, Bernie is the second coming of Christ. He has risen again! Hallelujah!

    Sorry, I found that too & we probably were posting at the same time.

    I can’t explain it but I love twisting ideas and forcing me (well, really everyone) to try to think of familiar things in new ways. I love this concept & what it means to try to think along this line:

    In his final book Den hemlige Frälsaren, Runeberg comes up with the argument that as God in human shape would be “made totally man, but man to the point of iniquity”, committing a sin would also not be beyond Him. More importantly, Runeberg states that a sacrifice limited to only one afternoon on the cross does not compare with the sacrifice of accepting shame and revulsion for the rest of history. Thereby, Runeberg concludes finally that He chose Judas as his incarnation. “God became a man completely, a man to the point of infamy, a man to the point of being reprehensible – all the way to the abyss. In order to save us, He could have chosen any of the destinies which together weave the uncertain web of history; He could have been Alexander, or Pythagoras, or Rurik, or Jesus; He chose an infamous destiny: He was Judas.”

    There was a discussion of the timing of Easter in the last thread. This was a big deal in seventh century Britain. The Celtic Church, based in the Scottish island of Iona, had kept to the old tradition of following Passover, while the Roman Church had modified that. The Irish monks from Iona had converted much of the north, while the missionaries sent from Rome had been converting the south. King Oswiu of Northumberland followed the Celtic tradition, while his wife Eanflaed came from Kent and followed the Roman ways. This created a problem because Easter ends the fast of Lent. In those days, pious Christians abstained from sex during Lent. So the King would leave Easter mass ready for a feast and a fuck, but his wife would not be ready for another couple of weeks. He called the Synod of Whitby to settle the matter; the Romans won.

It’s the first time I’ve done something alone that we used to do together that felt right. Peaceful even. Managed to regain some sense of clarity, and to understand that today was no day to hang my head. My beloved is at peace, and I can truly do no more for her. I have to continue on my walkabout, find my place in this world, to be able to live my life in a manner worthy of the love she so unconditionally gave to me. @rikyrah: As do I. She was worthy of every word. I’m not sure I was worthy of her, but I damned well will try to be.

    @Ben Cisco: That’s very touching – and heartening to hear you found something you enjoyed together than now feels not painful. You remain in my thoughts.

    @Ben Cisco,

    I know it is rather trite, but it is still true that you will always have her and your memories in your heart. You can always hold on to that.

    @Ben Cisco: That’s a great testament to your marriage Ben. And a wonderful way to remember and honor Mrs. Cisco and your 29 years together. {{Hug}}
