Adam L Silverman
@prob50: One of the big problems, and it happens every few years, is the need to be able to generate scoring. About 15, maybe 20 years or so ago they rolled out new rules limiting how big goalies gear could get. They had a problem that the goalies, of course, wanted the biggest gear they could effectively move in to increase their overall size and cut down the amount of space to get a puck into the goal. What they didn’t seem to pay attention to is that the goalies were also getting bigger. Many, if not most, of the goalies today are significantly bigger than they were a decade ago. And the goals themselves and the size of the rinks are the same. When you combine this with the fact that the other players are also bigger and faster you wind up with less space and in a lot of games low scoring. So it makes sense, at least to me, to increase the size of the playing surface to open the game up even more and to increase scoring. While I’m a goalkeeping fan, so a low scoring game with a ton of shots and great net minding is something I really like to watch, most people want to see a lot or scoring.

@Adam L Silverman:
The biggest problem in the NHL is that they allow too much crap. watch all the hooking and holding and interference. The game is designed to prevent the best players from excelling. They get dragged down to the poorer players level & when that is not low enough we have some goons ready willing and able to cause a ton of CTEs. One of the reasons 99 had so many goals was the refs enforced the rules for him. If they did that for everyone the game would open up, be faster, have a lot more scoring chances & great plays.
A really noticeable difference is watch an NHL’er go into the corner for the puck & how he behaves. He is not thinking of how to play the puck out or make something happen he is looking to get hammered & trying to protect himself. Watch these women play, they are dangerous coming out of the corner because their thought as they go in is not to protect them self but to make a great play with the puck. Unless you are a fan of physical abuse the womens game is a whole lot more exciting

Anne Laurie
@ruemara: That was some interview, wasn’t it? But it did confirm the suspicion I had from growing up in the Bronx & decamping for the midwest: “True” NYCers (and not just the ones born there) consider anyone who leaves the Big Apple to be lazy at best and a narrow-minded coward at worst. It really read like the interviewers were making fun of the clueless old man… he’d had a chance to stick around and scrum with all the other 60s socialists competing for city council slots, but nooo, young Bernie ran away in search of easier pickings. He couldn’t even stick it out in the Second City! He ended up holing up in the boonies of Vermont, where rich NY hedge fund managers have their summer places, carrying water for the least-diverse constituency outside suburban Atlanta…

I’m was watching Rachel on the DVR, they just showed Bernie at a rally in WI. Damn, he looked awful.

@Anne Laurie: I didn’t really take it that way at all. I was looking at his answers to questions on his policies.
David ?Canadian Anchor Baby? Koch
@MomSense: All he does is repeat his stump speech like a wind-up doll. And when they ask him a topic that isn’t in his stump speech he sputters he doesn’t know the answer and needs “paper” to determine a position (“you’re asking me a very fair question, and if I had some paper in front of me, I would give you a better answer”) and he sounds like Abbott and Costello on topics for which he’s clueless:
Now they would never let a Clinton get away with “I don’t know – I need paper” or “Who’s on first? – I don’t know, 3rd base!”. And for someone who’s been in the senate and congress for 25 years it’s embarrassing. But since he’s just a gadfly they humor him. Nevertheless that is why only 1 newspaper with circulation has endorsed him (seattle times)

When they ask him about what to do with captured terrorists he’s completely lost (“Actually I haven’t thought about it a whole lot.”). Nah. He’s only in the Senate and running for commander and chief, why would he think about that. I wish they would have asked him, “would you read them their rights?” just to see his hard drive crash.

No, they were Trotskyites (think the division between Rome and Constantinople). They had hated Stalin and at the time most orthodox Marxists were not going to be anything but pro-Stalin (ok, ok, certainly not all, but that is why the “most”). There were reasons for this, some to do with the Purges, some to do with the war. And some with the Cold War. At that time, so the story goes, the neo-con predecessors concluded they were very opposed to the communism of the USSR and gradually they became liberal hawks. I believe there have been several studies of this group. After the Democrats began splitting over the war (Vietnam) many transferred their allegiance to the Republicans (whose grasp of foreign policy was becoming enfeebled), and have basically been the foreign policy advisors ever since. But it isn’t their origin and this year a few seem to be seeing if their old liberal hawk clothes still fit. Anyway, that’s a sketch; not stuff I have looked into for years.

@Major Major Major Major: Wow. I wondered what I was missing when the ferry went past. I think actually going there would’ve seriously creeped me out. May I ask, what prompted your visit/interest?
Your cat, it goes without saying, is beautiful.

@Kay:
Not a surprise, this was going on all over the country, and probably lots of other countries. Power run amok. I’ve always thought the oath of celibacy for priests was foolish, other religions seem to get along fine with married clergy.
Sad sad story to read. The worst part is when a child grows up and goes away to State College for Penn State education, they go to that local priest for help, and he’s an abuser too.
One more reason of eleventy million why I’m not religious. Organized religion is so often managed by people who are nuts. I know many hard working, intelligent good people who are really into their organized religion, but the ones who are nuts are SO nuts I just can’t go there.
