Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

This really is a full service blog.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Republicans in disarray!

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

We will not go back.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

When I was faster i was always behind.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Fight them, without becoming them!

It’s Friday, thank merciful dog, and the second season of “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” has dropped on Netflix, so I’ve got that going for me. Any plans this weekend?

I got to finish a novella for use in an upcoming class I’m teaching on “How to E-Publish” that I’m teaching this Monday.

Also, my parents need me to look at their computer on Sunday when I go over for dinner. It’s their 50th anniversary coming up, I’m searching for ideas for a nice gift that has gold involved.

Jackie Robinson – Race Man – through and through

    ………..

    Jackie Robinson: Militant Black Republican

“I’m a black man first, an American second, and then I will support a political party—third,” said Robinson in 1968.

    BY: LEAH WRIGHT RIGUEUR

    Posted: April 13 2016 3:00 AM

On a Saturday evening in February of 1966, over a thousand mostly white Republican men and women crowded into a Cleveland hotel banquet hall, eager to hear Jackie Robinson’s opening keynote for the annual Ohio Republican Conference. The baseball icon-turned-political activist did not disappoint.

“I am not what is known as a good Republican,” Robinson declared upon taking the stage. “I am certainly not a safe Republican. I am weary of the black man going hat in hand, shoulders hunched and knee pads worn, to ‘Uncle Tom’ to the enemies of our progress.”

In the context of today’s political chaos, Jackie Robinson’s militant pronouncements feel alien, especially when one surveys the racial wreckage of the modern GOP. The Republican Party’s approach to race right now can best be described as anarchy, as Donald Trump gleefully turns dog-whistle politics into full-blown nuclear alarm.

As party leaders scramble to address the Trump invasion, they’ve sidestepped accountability for the GOP’s role in creating the current climate. Largely absent in all of this are the voices of the party’s racial minorities. A few scattered examples have emerged as critiques of both Trump and the GOP at large, but none have done it with the comprehensive ferocity that rivals that of Jackie Robinson.

For years, conservatives have tried to claim the political legacy of Robinson without acknowledging his actual complicated “militant” politics. Although he campaigned as an independent for Richard Nixon in 1960, later changing his affiliation to Republican, and forged a close working relationship with New York Republican Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, Robinson was always cagey about his GOP identification.

“I’m a black man first,” he once calmly stated, while appearing on a 1968 television program, “an American second, and then I will support a political party—third.”

THE WORST PART OF BUZZFEED’S SHOCKINGLY SELF-LOATHING “27 QUESTIONS BLACK PEOPLE HAVE FOR BLACK PEOPLE”

    Damon Young, 4/13/16

It’s been a little over 12 hours since I first saw Buzzfeed’s “27 Questions Black People Have For Black People.” It was shared on the timelines of quite a few of my friends yesterday afternoon, but I didn’t get a chance to actually watch it until last night. And still, 12 hours later, I’m shocked by how bad it is.

    …………………

But mostly, I’m shocked by the level of GFA (Gotdamn Fucking Awful) this was. It was so abjectly GFA that I watched a second time to verify how GFA it happened to be, and a third time just to make sure there wasn’t any satire I missed. Like maybe this was one of those meta jokes within a jokes about the type of Black people who think and say shit like this. But it wasn’t that. It was a video curation of every space on the self-loathing Black person bingo card.

    …………………………

Also, it actually makes me sad that there are so many seemingly smart and witty and successful Black people so firmly ensconced in anti-Blackness. People either hurt so badly they’ve internalized everything negative they’ve seen about Black people or in possession of such a jaundiced view of Black culture that they feel the need to distance themselves from it. (Or both.) I already knew they existed, but I don’t know. Watching this was like peeking into a hot dog factory. You already know they use all types of pig toenails and pigeon beaks to make them, but actually seeing it happen with your own eyes turns your stomach. It’s fucking depressing, man.

I find the Writer Beware blog a valuable resource.
    http://accrispin.blogspot.com
Lots of scam artists out there preying on aspiring writers, trying to sell all sorts of overpriced editing and representation services. There was one outfit advertising itself as a “translation” service (so that writers could expand into international markets) and it turns out the outfit was merely one lady in her home office using google translate, and charging hundreds of dollars per page for the privilege.

The poetry gets collected in a “limited edition” anthology that is then sold to the poets, who are the only people who actually read the book. It’s getting hard to tell the players without a scorecard

Students from Indiana University took to Twitter to caution fellow students of a man “dressed in white robes” who was seen on campus “carrying a whip.” A university dorm resident advisor subsequently sent out a cautionary email to studebts in his building, and campus-wide chaos ensued.

While a mix-up between a Klansman and a priest seems unlikely, McPeak, who serves as the director of campus ministry at the Saint Paul Catholic Center at Indiana University, said he could understand the confusion.

The woman recently married one of Mr IOL’s co-workers which is how she wound up in Iowa, but she’s apparently a well known singer in Brazil. Her name is Bruna Melo and there were a ton of listings for her online.

    Hello, friends,

Last week was not one of the better weeks of my life. Woke up Sunday before last with sore foot, which kept feeling worse. Wondered if I’d dropped something and broken bone, finally got taken to emergency room, MD came in, took one look, said ‘Gout’. Which don’t kill you, but it Hurts Like HELL.

Anyway, Mayo Clinic website suggests that coffee drinking can ameliorate gout. As I’ve never been good at making coffee from ground beans (descendent of tea-drinking Irish), wondering yf you’ve any advice for beginner, on coffee varieties and bean sources (there is a well-regarded specialty coffee bean seller a few blocks from my home), equipment and procedures, etc, or if you know of books or websites…

Have reasonable budget for getting started, but quite small kitchen to play in, no excess counter space to dedicate to coffee brewing. Live by myself, so only one or two cups at a time.

Thanks for any advice you can give me about this. (Thoughts on making a pitcher of iced coffee for the summer, and on the merits and failings of various artificial sweeteners are also welcome.)

Do you like or dislike the flavor? Brewing method affects the strength and flavor of coffee, so would need to know your general opinion of the stuff. Simplest is a pour-over filter arrangement (hot water goes into a filter cone containing ground (preferably fresh) coffee directly into the cup). Tiny initial cost and a good way to try different beans and roasts.

@JAFD: I managed to switch to diet coke after years of trying and failing when my attempt happened to coincide with a cold that lasted over a week. Apparently my tastebuds/sense of smell were dulled enough that I got past my usual trial period. It would taste fine for one week, then all at once I couldn’t stand it about one week in each time. Now I don’t really like real coke. Everyine is a bit different on which sweetener they tolerate, you will have to try them, however if you do have trouble, I recommend looking forward to your next cold and using it.
Some of the sweeteners cannot be stored in the fridge so read the labels. I basically just use it in my soda because that is my weakness and therefore I don’t know much about the manually added stuff. I do wish they would invent a sugar free sweetener Lucky ‘charms cereal.

My advice is not to go crazy at first. If you’re not sure you’ll continue coffee drinking over the long term, you can buy ground beans so you don’t have to get a fancy grinder. I personally make coffee (decaf, actually) with an Aeropress, which combines the virtues of small size, reasonable cost, simplicity, and making good coffee. It uses hot water from the stove and requires no permanent counter space, so it’s a good choice for a small kitchen. If you stick to coffee making, you can invest in a quality burr grinder.

I don’t think that the choice of LBJ had much to do with it. And the GOP up to Nixon, had always attracted black votes. And there is this.

Robinson openly questioned John F. Kennedy’s commitment to civil rights in 1960, calling his vows to eradicate discrimination “insincere” and endorsing Richard Nixon. The move was not unusual at a time when 40 percent of black voters routinely pulled the lever for GOP candidates.

RE: But he turned against the Republican party and specifically against Nixon after the Southern Strategy.

Apparently, Robinson had a newspaper article published under his name that furiously blasted the racism among the Goldwater GOP. This was before Nixon and the Southern Strategy. And there is this.

“A Barry Goldwater victory,” he wrote in his autobiography, “would insure that the GOP would be completely the white man’s party.”

I’m catching up on Robinson’s story, and didn’t see the recent PBS biography, but there is lots of good information available about him. I’m curious about his time in Canada.

“She has been suspended while we investigate the matter,” Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs wrote in an email to the Times.

Zimmerman was hired by the Sanders campaign on Tuesday, and the news was followed by a Wednesday Washington Free Beacon report with a screenshot of a Facebook post by Zimmerman.

Speaking of coffee, I realized last year I am horribly addicted to caffeine, and its a real addiction.

I’ve been fasting twice a year for 15 years and it was always brutal. By 6pm I’d get this headache that would get worse and worse until I could nothing but lay down and ride it out. Then I heard someone discussing how painful it was to give up caffeine and I was like, “Can that be it?”.

So the last two times I’ve fasted I’ve had some green tea in the morning and voila! No headaches at all. In fact I felt so good I’ve fasted for 48 hours just because I could. So it was the lack of my usual coffee which was causing the headaches, not the lack of food. It’s shocking how powerful that addiction is. My body needs it now.

I’ve been weaning myself off caffeine ever since, because I don’t dare go cold turkey.

Oh, and I got tickets to tour the Japanese Teahouse at the Huntington on Sunday. My local niece was supposed to go with me, but her mom decided to pitch a fit about not being asked soon enough. Gah!

ETA: Corrected above — tomorrow is Shakespeare day at the Huntington, Sunday is the Teahouse tour.

    @JAFD:

There are endless, highly debated, “best” ways to brew coffee. Ditto varieties to buy. You are not going to know which methods and coffee kinds you like without some experimenting.

The two most important variables you can control are grinder and water temp. Burr grinders do make a difference. But are pricey. Water temp is usually around 205 F, no higher.

But if you really don’t like coffee, there is no point to buying a pour over kettle witn a thermometer. Or a burr grinder. So start small. Go to a nice coffee store. Tell them what you’re doing.

Get a Hario drip cone with filters. Or a french press. Or an aero-press. (or view and read about those online and order at Amazon. Warning you will find a million You Tube how-to’s on all). Have them grind two different half pounds for you with their lovely grinder to fit whatever maker you get. And start your testing. Then try two more varieties based on what you did or did not like about the first two.

Then you will see if you really want to deal with futzing with stuff, or you do not have that sensitive a palate, and just want a nice, temp sensitive brewer with a carafe that is easy to use. Or the gout has resolved.

If you haven’t read Krugman’s blog entry for today yet, take a look. He really captures what has been bugging me about Sanders. I another one of those who have gone from “not my first choice” to “please make it stop,” largely for reasons that have to do with attitude rather than positions. Krugman says:

What you see, on this [the South shouldn’t count] as on multiple issues, is the casual adoption, with no visible effort to check the premises, of a story line that sounds good. It’s all about the big banks; single-payer is there for the taking if only we want it; government spending will yield huge payoffs — not the more modest payoffs conventional Keynesian analysis suggests; Republican support will vanish if we take on corporate media.

In each case the story runs into big trouble if you do a bit of homework; if not completely wrong, it needs a lot of qualification. But the all-purpose response to anyone who raises questions is that she or he is a member of the establishment, personally corrupt, etc.. Ad hominem attacks aren’t a final line of defense, they’re argument #1.

In other words, simplistic, and then uncompromising and self-righteous about it. To me, Krugman has been a reliable guide for decades through thick and thin. He’s hardly soft on Clinton or Obama when he disagrees. I can’t believe some of the contempt I’ve seen heaped on him these days by certain Sanders supporters. (Obviously not everyone is to blame for the actions of some.) I think he has Bernie’s number.

@JAFD: I’ve slowly worked my way into a pretty good coffee habit. From a height, there’s two kinds of beans, ‘regular’ (e.g., Colombian) and darker ‘roast’ (e.g., French Roast, Italian Roast). The roasts have a stronger flavor, but somewhat oddly, regular beans have more caffeine than the roasts. FWIW, I keep a canister of a mixture of regular and roast whole beans in the freezer, and grind them just before brewing.

If you ask a restaurant person about how to make good coffee, there’s one rule– ‘Keep it clean’. Generally speaking, keep your coffee-grinding and coffee-brewing stuff clean and you will make good coffee. The hand-waving explanation is that the oils in in the ground beans will turn rancid after a while.

I do recommend buying whole beans and grinding it yourself. I’ll horrify the gourmets and say that you should use an inexpensive blade grinder– they are cheap, they last forever and they’re easy to clean. Later, when you become a fanatic, you can get a burr grinder, which is expensive, fragile, and hard to clean.

You can find a lot of baseline information about how much coffee and water and whatever to mix together– and if you don’t like the result just try something else. It’s your coffee.

@JAFD: My husband has gout — it’s well controlled without meds, just the occasional flare-up (maybe half a dozen in the 20 years we’ve been a pair). Anyway, I never knew coffee was good for gout sufferers, but my husband does drink coffee daily; I’ll have to mention to him that he’s not to give it up!

I second the suggestions from others to check into a French press. It’s not expensive, doesn’t take up much space and makes a nice cup. If you’re near a big supermarket, you may be able to grind beans at the store, and then you can keep your coffee in the freezer to keep it fresh, and you won’t have to bother with a grinder.

Since you’re a coffee novice, maybe you’d be better off drinking it black if you find that at all palatable. I got my start drinking coffee as a child by draining my mother’s cups of creamy, sugary coffee every time she turned her back. As an adult, it wasn’t easy to wean myself off the sugar (I do not like artificial sweeteners), and I’m still unable to give up half-n-half, which isn’t particularly good for me.

Best of luck controlling the gout. It can be just awful. My husband can’t even bear to have a sheet touch his foot when he gets it.

For ice coffee just add cold water and a couple of ice cubes. It is tasty and takes essentially no extra space in a kitchen.

    Hello again !

The Mayo Clinic also mentions cherries as beneficial. I love cherries. Friend told me of her friend that drank liquid from jars of maraschino cherries, not sure about that ;-)

OK, I _like_ coffee, but never got into making it for myself and drinking it on a regular basis. Told myself, OK, if it’s good for what ails me, let’s get into _getting the good stuf and making it properly_. So looking for advice on ‘where to start’ and maybe ‘where to start looking for advice’.

Problem, I guess, is that I’ve never gone thru the ‘This Is Good Coffee, And This Is How You Make It’ ‘socialization process’. So have little knowledge of ‘exactly what I like’ or ‘what I like better than that’ or ‘how you get from ground beans to the result you want’.

Speaking of Brazil, leave near a neighborhood largely of Brazilian/Portugese immigrants, have tried coffee at coffeeshops where as much Portugese is spoken, and liked it better than Starbucks. Many brands of coffee imported from Brazil in local markets. Must try some.

    @JAFD:

You will probably want mild roast beans, as the more roasted they are the more bitter it is.

We use stainless thermos-style coffee makers, which you can pre-heat with boiling water, something you are probably used to making tea. Drip style coffee makers seem best to me, french-press make good coffee, but are a pain to clean up after, and you make one cup per press for one drinker, so you’re fooling with it all morning.

We have a Mr Coffee at the camp, which has a reservoir you can take to the sink to fill with as much water as you want coffee. Here at the main home we have a Cuisinart which takes longer. You will want a grinder, which is a little electric gadget which chops beans finer the longer you hold the button down.

There are reviews and such, but I found most of them more stupid than wine reviews. But there are middle-of-the road articles online that can inform you about this stuff. I started drinking coffee about 3 years ago, before we went on a long trip, I find that tea out is usually terrible compared to tea at home. In fancy hotels, coffee is pretty good. Use heavy cream if you like, I’m not sure if that contributes to gout or not.

There are drugs that help with gout, my dad got into it after starting chemo and it (the anti-gout drugs) work well for him. He could probably blame side effects on the chemo drugs!

    Good luck.
