Figured we could use some cuteness as a counterweight to all the primary snarlies.
Anyone here ever had a pet rabbit? My little brother had one that we named “Cyndy Lop-ear.” It was the 80s.

Jack Ohman wins a Pulitzer. This makes me happy, much as a bunny might.

I had a co-worker who raised show rabbits, and she would show up to work with her arms slashed to hell and back. Apparently rabbits can be vicious.
On the subject of cuteness, while my usual napping buddy threw up on my bed and is now sleeping on a box in the hallway, but little black kitty is, for the first time ever, sleeping next to me on the pillow. She must sense how close to a total breakdown I am at. I’m not sure what I’m gonna do about her when I move. She was an inside cat until I adopted her, but now she LOVE the outdoors, and I’m determined to move back into an apartment.

Finally, a thread where we can discuss Hamilton‘s Pulitzer Prize!
… what?
Mike J
@Mnemosyne: Can we get back to politics?
Mnemosyne
@Mike J:
C’mon, you gotta love the pic that the NY Post chose to illustrate the story. That’s my imaginary future ex-husband Daveed Diggs on the left there.
The Post seems to be embracing the fact that their founder had a hit play written about him that’s breaking box office records.

@Mnemosyne: Wasn’t it you who told us about Hillary’s tweet after Ham won (Grammy? Something?)
I listened to The Election of 1800 for the first time today. I have not listened to the rest yet, but it’s on my phone now waiting for me to run out of Around Britain quiz shows to listen to. You haven;t sucked me in yet, but I feel myself slipping.
Betty Cracker
@Mnemosyne: There, it’s covered! Now we can get back to the very important topic of furry little animals…
Roger Moore
@Mike J:
Please?

@Mnemosyne:
That second picture is bullshit, though. What does Oprah Winfrey have to do with it, other than a celebrity fly-by?
Betty Cracker
@Mike J: Christ, not you too! Time for bed.

I have two pairs of rabbits, and also one foster bunny. I recommend them as house pets; most of them take to litter boxes pretty well, and they’re naturally active at dawn and dusk, which fits well with a work schedule.

@keith p:
I didn’t read the morning thread until long after it had gone dormant, but was horrified to learn of your flooding and transportation problems. I do hope those issues are at least getting under control.
Cats can be very sensitive to our emotions, and it sounds as though your little black kitty is tuning into yours. I wish you serenity as you cope with all the stuff life is throwing at you right now.
Mnemosyne
@keith p:
Double-check with Werebear, but your kitty should be fine going back to indoor-only as long as you give her plenty of cat trees and other ways to climb around the new place.
TaMara (HFG)
Speaking of cuteness. Bixby was mad at me the other night, because I was in a crap mood and was snarly at him all evening. So when it came time for bed, he reluctantly came in the room and instead of jumping up in bed, he collapsed quite loudly and with a hurrumph on the floor. Making sure I knew he was not happy with me.
He did later crawl in bed (how he does it and not wake anyone, I’ll never know, the big beast), so I guess I was forgiven or the floor got cold.
I love this dog-love his spirit. It was clear from day one he was not to be bossed. <3

wait, there’s a musical about Alexander Hamilton?
Betty Cracker
@Redshift: So a total of five bunnies! Wow. Do they hang out together?
Mnemosyne
@Mike J:
Yep, that was me. Hillz is an old-timer with Lin-Manuel since she was also a big fan of his previous Tony winner, In The Heights. She definitely threw herself into New York culture once she decided to make it her new home base.

Anyone here who lives in the northwestern suburbs of Atlanta (out toward Kennesaw) care to make a couple of restaurant reccos that will suit a veggie? A Sunday brunch recco would also be greatly appreciated.

@chopper:
There was one about Andrew Jackson first, but it never quite took off like Hamilton. I guess it’s harder to romanticize a guy who coordinated genocide than it is to romanticize a guy who facilitated the creation of Wall Street.
Plus the music isn’t as good.
Mike J
@SiubhanDuinne: North v South, Scotland v Wales, very tough questions for Americans because they’re pretty tough for Brits, and often have to do with a small county off in the middle of nowhere or a children’s show that *everybody* watched, except those of us who didn’t live in BBC range in the 1960s. Still fun, and I actually learn more from having questions I don’t know the answer to than something like Jeopardy where I do pretty well.

OMG, screaming bunny cuteness!!
I had a bunny named Taffy, that I begged and pleaded for when we were at the Detroit Farmers Market when I was about 10. Taffy lived in the basement, because my mother couldn’t withstand my pleadings, but couldn’t stand the thought of bunny beans all over the house upstairs. Died tragically young, probably from eating broom straw on one of his forays outside the hutch. I still feel badly about poor Taffy. Made me realize you do your kids no favors by giving in to their pleadings for pets you don’t really like yourself.

@chopper: Actually, I think it’s about George Hamilton.
My DVR did not record the season finale of Better Call Saul…. I am angry.

@Mnemosyne: Not that bad….but, yeah, the genocide is kinda hard to ignore (a lot of Native arts types are really not happy about the musical).

Company management sent Pulitzer pies!
(The labels are the names of the other musicals that have also won the Pulitzer — it’s not that common for musicals to win over dramas.)
Mike J
@Mnemosyne: Round Britain isn’t funny like QI, but still fun. I enjoy QI a lot, along with Buzzcocks and 8 out of 10 Cats, but “quiz show” is really just a rough skeleton for an improv comedy.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
That’s a straight-up crime! “Saul” and “The Americans” both have season-enders this week, leaving a bit of a programming hole. Although, “Thrones” and such are coming, as isn’t winter. It was about 90 today. Also 90 in Seattle, smashing all manner of eerie records.

@Mike J:
Thank you! I’ll give it a try!

@Mnemosyne: What kind of pies were they? Congrats!
Betty Cracker
@TaMara (HFG): Wow, two already? They seem like sweet dogs. I’ve never had a dog that big, but my sister used to have a St. Bernard. He was a big lug, also super sweet. We used to walk dogs together, and sis had to bring a shovel to bag the beast’s massive turds!
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Oh man, I’d be pissed. I watch it on Amazon at my leisure rather than broadcast, so I’ll probably see it tomorrow. It’s a terrific show — as good or better than “Breaking Bad,” IMO.

Tens, tens, tens, tens
Lovely tens, wonderful tens….
And so forth. Best served on toast.

Betty, is that the same brother who drove off in a van and called your mom and said “I’m in Savannah” and your mom said “Savannah had better be a girl!”?

“No way out. No way out.”
And if you don’t get that joke, then the end of the 4th season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” was very puzzling to you.

@trollhattan: The Americans is ending its season already? Damn, that was fast. Hard to believe Keri Russel went from being the proto-adorkable girl to being the dead-eyed killer Elizabeth. The whole cast is so good.
@Betty Cracker: I’m gonna wait half an hour to see if it become available on Demand. I did’ know the current season was already on Amazon. Theres an article on Slate arguing BCS is better than BB. I was gonna read it after I watched the damn finale on my damn DVR! Dammit

@redshirt:
Not my pies. I’m excited on someone else’s behalf.
redshirt
@Mnemosyne: Did you see the pies? Chocolate and vanilla frosting, I’m assuming.
Redshift
@Betty Cracker: No, they’re fairly territorial, so each bonded pair lives together, but they don’t interact with the other. They’re descended from European rabbits who live in big colonies (unlike American cottontails), so it would be possible to have a big group if you were willing to put up with dominance battles and the occasional notch bitten in an ear, but that’s not fun for pets or their people.
They’re quite sociable with each other and with us, though there are different personalities. Some seek out human attention, others just more or less tolerate it.
Redshift
@Miss Bianca: There are an unfortunate number of stories like that, and you didn’t know any better. Another reason why rescue/fostering organizations are better than pet stores and most other sellers – we won’t adopt with a kid as the primary caregiver; the parents have to be willing to take responsibility.

@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): It’s such a common feeling – the internet has an odd way of generating outrage but without any of the compensating empathy or distance one might get from reading something in a newspaper or a book. Something about the immediacy and interactivity drives people crazy . . .
Omnes Omnibus
@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): Oblig…..
Miss Bianca

Fine. I’ll see you that, and raise you this. Just before I try to go to sleep. Thinking about clowns. Thanks to you.

@eemom: We don’t, but there are people who do. We’re not organized enough to have the whole house bunny-proofed. Most will chew on paper and unprotected electrical cords, which is something you don’t have to worry about with dogs and cats. Some also chew on furniture or dig in carpets, some don’t.
But since they sleep most of the day, it’s not too much of a hardship for them to be in a pen then and only be out when we’re home to supervise.

I’m going to ask politely- of everyone – that comments like
and the like be reconsidered prior to posting.
I’m not trying to pick on PJ , whose point is quite insightful about internet interactions and our responses in the course of those. But language matters (I’m partial to drives people right round the twist, personally). And “crazy” is a pejorative often directed at people with serious brain disorders, though it’s clear to me that wasn’t your intent here. And it’s a truly minor example – almost not worth noting, but… language matters
But I will ask, every time I see something similar, that posters here consider how casual comments might sound mocking and offensive to people with diseases and note that society would never tolerate humor at the expensive of people with cancer, heart disease, or paralysis (finally), as examples.
Thank you all and offered with no intent to be obnoxious. Which needs to be specified, since so many of my comments clearly are.

@Redshift: I know some folks – closer to my son in one case, and to my husband in another, who had pet rabbits, who had the run of the house mostly. There may have been a certain “poop here” training/hutch things, but apparently rabbits can be pretty nice pets (and if they do poop in the wrong place, their pellets are pretty benign).
We rescued a rabbit once. No, srsly. It was clearly an “Easter Bunny” that had been dumped. (I hate people.) The fannish network found a place for it, which was great. But living with a couple of cats – one who was called “The Mighty Huntress” only slightly ironically clearly wasn’t gonna work.

@TaMara (HFG): My golden Seamus was much like Bixby. Very expressive in his sighing and harrumph-ing when he wasn’t happy with the plan. More than a dog – he was almost a person in his own right, but with the better soul of a dog. In fact, the way that I taught him to “speak”, was when he yawned wide to voice a protest (and therefore “good speak”), because he was otherwise pretty silent.
