Didn’t really listen to any Prince in the past, and my only real knowledge/memory was the hilarious Chappelle’s Show skit. Popped on a bunch of his tunes today – including one of his last shows in Atlanta last week – the man was a talented musician. The sad thing about these legends passing away is that no one is replacing them. No one is going to give two shits when Scott Stapp or Chad Kroger keels over in the future.
That said, it seems like the city of Minneapolis is having a hell of a block/dance party to celebrate his life. It’s probably the way he would’ve wanted it.

Um? Sometimes little girls need to go potty when a) Mom’s not along or b) the women’s room has a line around the building but the men’s room is almost empty. So sometimes little girls need to be in the grown-men’s bathroom, in which case they should have someone with them! Just thanking (deity of choice) for the millions of dads out there with way more clue than Mr. Cruz possesses.
And sick of all this trans-bashing. I am not down with anyone’s revolution, and I usually get the pronoun thing wrong with people who are changing from a born to a better-fitting identity, but good grief even I get it that most trans people have been through *enough* already. And I know of zero women who would feel safer about having people verify their anatomy somehow before they are permitted to take a leak.

That was the first thing I noticed about these stupid anti-trans laws: aside from the obvious inhumanity, they genuinely don’t seem to have thought through the case of a parent traveling with small children of the opposite sex. In high-traffic public places these days there are often unisex single-toilet family restrooms offered for this purpose, but they’re not everywhere by any means.

@Matt McIrvin: They are also, by their nature, single stall units. And occupied more than occasionally (and, interestingly, where some trans or gender nonconforming people go to the loo now to avoid hassle).
So even if a place has a family bathroom, it may not help, since kids usually *have to go now* by the time they tell you. So in goes daddy with little girl, or vice versa. And why anyone should care is beyond me.
I like what is done in parts of western Europe, which is fully private lockable water closets with one unisex handwashing area. But even that is beside the point. Trans people know which fking bathroom fits their sense of self, and deserve zero interference from the rest of us about it.

The psychological obstacle to overcome is that there are quite a few (almost invariably cis and hetero) creepy men who plant cameras in women’s bathrooms or hang around trying to peep in. the number of artist who owe some of their biggest hits to Prince or even their career to Prince is actually astounding…Morris Day & The Time, Sheena Easton, Sheila E…the number of songs he wrote they became hits for others people too…I mean Kiss and The Beautiful Ones and of course Nothing Compares To You…

It’s odd to think that groups like this start out with tiny gigs like that.

@Mike J: We saw Bonnie Raitt open for Little Feat. She burned the place down… it was awesome.
We tried to stay and get into the headliners, but it just couldn’t be done.
I got to see Frank Zappa at the Chicago Symphony’s summer park, Ravinia Park. Almost none of the season ticket holders came to the show, so when the lights went down, the Zappa fans took all those great expensive seats. I was close enough to have hit him with a spitwad. Great show, 1971.
I saw Janis first at the Newport Folk festival in 1968, it was a blues focused fest. Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, l can’t remember all the great blues men we saw that weekend. Then I saw her again in Philly, with Joe Cocker, Carlos Santana, and a fourth band that isn’t coming to me. She was a gift to the world too. As was Joe C.
I actually got to see and hear Louis Armstrong, the jazz great trumpeter, in St Pete in one of those huge halls with plasterwork and gilt and velvet. Pearl Bailey was singing with him. I was probably10 or 12, but knew he was a link to the root birth of jazz, and was older than dirt, and I would never have another chance to hear him play, and it was Christmastime, and I begged my parents, who also liked that big band sound. So they gave in, and we sat in the very back of the hall, with all the black folks, who were dressed to the nines to show their respect for a great man.
Music has been very very good to me. It sooths me when I am raging about Cruz or some such. It uplifts me when I am in the black lagoon. It makes me happy when I’m with friends at a show. It helps me go on when I am lost.
Thank you Prince. RIP. Now I’m gonna try to go back to sleep, we have a PT date at 10 am, and then I’m going to the health department for more vaccinations. Wish me luck!

@Mnemosyne:
I think by his omission, Ted takes his daughters to the Ladies Room.

@Dog Dawg Damn:
She’s an even worse candidate than he was.
Mike J
@NR: At least she doesn’t have Tad Devine “helping” her.
Kathleen
@lamh36: Also, too, Mint Condition is from St. Paul.

@gene108: I suspect Cruz, like some of the “macho” dads from my long-ago childhood, uses the potty issue as an excuse for never taking his daughters anywhere. At least not without a female “minder” he can hand them off to.
An unfortunately high percentage of the little girls I knew growing up whose dads rejected them this way ended up, by the time they were in high school, getting involved with older, abusive men. But that was back in the 1960s, so I hope the Cruz daughters will make better choices.

@Matt McIrvin: I’m guessing instances of sexual assault by trans in public restrooms are even rarer than those of in-person voter fraud, but when ignorance and bigotry are the justifications for the legislation a lawmaker supports rather than justice and compassion, this is what happens.

@Tissue Thin Pseudonym: It’s as easy as claiming to be a Christian while completely ignoring the Golden Rule.

@p.a.: Trampled by Turtles will be in the mix someday.

@Mnemosyne: Foo Fighters (and Dave) are one of the most well respected groups/artists in show business.
if you ever get a chance to see Foo Fighters, please do. You will get your money’s worth.

@lamh36: If you wait until someone else wants to go to some of these things, you may find yourself waiting a long time. You need to get up & go!

@Lamh36: One of the greatest guitarists I’ve ever seen (on TV, never saw him live).

@Tokyokie: Not to be fair exactly but to be clearer, what they’re concerned about isn’t actual trans people committing assaults, it’s depraved cis straight people, especially pedophiles, posing as trans people to commit assaults. Of course a cis straight pervert _now_ can put on a dress and go into a public bathroom with a skirted silhouette, but that isn’t mentioned for some reason. Nor is the fact that a cis straight pervert _now_ can go into a public bathroom with a skirted silhouette and leave the dress behind. I’m not clear on why Ted Cruz and others think that the sign on the door functions as a force field that only admits people in obvious women’s clothing.

Sigh. I’m not seeing a lot of speculation that drugs were involved with Prince death but got an email from a friend saying disappointing hearing drugs may have been. I don’t know where the friend read or heard this. I replied to wait for autopsy report.
Miss Bianca
@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): my favorite story about Townes Van Zant was hearing that some lady in the audience requested him to “play a happy song.” He just looked at her, chuckled, and said, “These *are* the happy songs, darlin'”.
@Paul in KY: btw “Trampled by Turtles” is possibly my favorite band name ever. Good band, too!
Paul in KY
@Miss Bianca: Glad you like them. Have seen them 3 or 4 times on the Fest circuit. Think they’ll be in the teens someday (behind Husker Du, for sure).
New Orleans and Never Again are 2 great songs by them.

@J R in WV:
Little Feat were a very inconsistent live act because of Lowell George’s drug issues. I saw them on a really good night in early 1979 and they tore the roof off the Capitol Theatre. And “Waiting for Columbus” is one of the great live albums of all time.

@bemused:
TMZ is claiming that it was drug-related. When someone is famously reclusive, that’s where everyone’s mind goes, but I hope that it was not the case.

Religious conservatives have an extra hurdle to get over before they easily accept transgenders in a woman’s bathroom. To religious conservatives people are born male or female and any deviancy from the norm is a matter of choice (and a sinful choice at that). The do not acknowledge that some members of our society are born with identities at odds with their physicality, that would be a departure too far from the good vs evil paradigm that drives their own religious identity.

@Mnemosyne:
Yes but people should know better by now than to trust but not wait for verification what they may hear or read on media. I may be jaded but it seems to me that conservative people are most susceptible to this.

@bemused: Joe Arpaio was spreading that around on Twitter yesterday.

Well, that settles it then coming from such a thoroughly reliable source, lol.
According to friend early this morning this news is everywhere which seemed to me to be gossip sites at the time.
