Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

So many bastards, so little time.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Petty moves from a petty man.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

This fight is for everything.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Is Hamilton the first musical to potentially influence a big government decision? Cats didn’t, right?

Prince and Misty Copeland perform “The Beautiful Ones”

“The beautiful ones, they leave you everytime…”

Apparently, according to his JW faith, the body of Prince was cremated and they held a small private memorial with friends and family at Paisley Park.

Afterward, employees at Paisley Park handed out purple gift bags to 100s of fans outside Paisely Park… I’m betting all this was planned by Prince according to his wishes…he seemed to love his fans.

    @lamh36:

The “FUNKNROLL” singer, who died Thursday at 57, had “very precise ideas” of how he wanted to be laid to rest — and so shortly after his body was released from a 9 a.m. autopsy in Ramsey, Minn., family members had his body cremated at a funeral home about 2 p.m., sources told the British paper.

“He wanted it to be kept to the minimum of fuss. Prince was such figure you don’t need a funeral to remember him by,” a family friend said. “He wanted to simply disappear with no fuss, no drama, no fanfare. It was just his style.”

Alright, in other music news, I watched Beyonce’s Lemonade visual album thing on HBO.

    Alright… the Lemonade video…things i enjoyed,
    1) the Blackness of it. I already see certain folk confused by the imagery used. (FYI, when coming up with think pieces about it, I’d like to hope folks run it bay their AA BFF, before hitting publish…just saying white folks…save yourselves some pain… :-)
    2) NOLA…how can I not…love a video that from what I can see was filmed almost entirely in NOLA and surrounding parishes.
    3) The mothers of Trayvon and others, I admit, Mike Brown’s mom, got me.
    4) many shades of Black womenhood…Quvenzhané, Zendaya, Amandla, baby Blu…old, young, all represented.

    Things I didnt’ enjoy..
    1) Length…I’ve been at work all day, so it was too long for me…but okay.
    2) I hate the entire bait and switch thing on whether she was talking about Jay…instead, it was likely a mix of talking about her father and her mother’s divorce and her own marital woes. If it was a direct reflection of her marital woes, I’d feel real bad for Jay Z…

Essentially it was one big marketing/PR push for her new album, which, of course, dropped immediately after the video ended.

@lamh36: I didn’t think there was any bait and switch. It was pretty clear it was about Jay Z. Her father made an appearance because he probably made an impact on her. But the larger theme was about her marriage and how she went from rage to forgiveness and a warning in between. She was basically telling Jay Z that if he did this again then she will not forgive him.

This is a true story – Wilson was very fond of “Birth Of A Nation” and watched in in the White House Several times.
Among Wilson’s achievements was an executive order prohibiting the hiring of blacks and removing as many from their federal jobs as possible. He also mandated segregation in the armed forces and sent the Marines to Haiti to remove the democratically elected black government & install a white dictatorship.

Not a musical but it did seem to have some affect on the old racist bastard

@David Spikes: I’ve been sketching out this crazy idea for a comic book history of the United States called “Time Assassin”. Basically it deals with this superhero who goes back in time, grabs significant historical characters from America’s past, and then sets up a tribunal – kind of a cross between “This Is Your Life!” and Brecht’s “The Trial of Lucullus” – where posterity gets to judge them. At the end of the trial the jury decides whether this person’s reputation should be murdered or saved. First story’s “hero” is…Woodrow Wilson. Doesn’t go so well for him. I was thinking John Brown might be next.

@Schlemazel Khan: RE: Haiti. President Vilbrun Sam was the fifth president in five years (ancient Rome had a similar period of turmoil), and was murdered by a mob. The US intervention installed a mulatto president. The US military there, dominated by Southern officers and abetted by Wilson, continued and exacerbated the colorist hierarchy which had always been a problem for the country. Successive presidents, even after the US withdrawal, were either lighter skinned blacks or men dominated by the mulatto elites.

But even before Wilson authorized his invasion, the US often meddled in Haiti and kept dissension going. And often the Monroe Doctrine was invoked. It’s a sad history which really deserves deeper exploration. School kids’ heads would explode if they had to cover this stuff.
