My 19-year old is voting for the first time. That’s impressive, given the response of her age cohort. I’m so proud of her!
Unfortunately, I’m also going to have to talk her through her first electoral defeat (assuming polls hold). That’s a bummer.

In First World problems solved, I got my new washer today. Old one failed, with a problem that could not be fixed. Something, something to do with electronics, as the repairman said the mechanical stuff – motor, door seal, etc. – was working just fine.
Now I’m getting all the laundry I’d been putting off for a few weeks finished.
What we need to invent are self folding clothes. Having to sort through and put away all the clothes is going is not something I’m look forward to.
Sanders doesn’t sound like reality has intruded. He’s talking about winning against Republicans because he’s getting the most votes. Now he’s talking about truth telling, and the corporate media…[crowd.. booooooo]

Yep. White women mostly vote Republican (particularly married white women), but no women of any ethnicity like Trump. Even creepy Cruz has less of a gender gap, IIRC.

@Betty Cracker: Seconded on the Roomba. I also always hated vacuuming, and arthritis finally gave me an excuse to leave it all to my lil robot. @MomSense: Dog hair, yes! Ironically, it’s my hair that fouls the poor Roomba, not the dogs’ — I have really long hair and apparently shed like a golden retriever because every few weeks or so, I have to take the brushes out of the Roomba and clean them as if they were my hairbrush.
A Roomba won’t help with clutter (e.g., shoes and backpacks strewn across the floor, etc. — all common in my house too), but it’ll work around it. I got one for Christmas (soooo romantic!), and I love it. I just have to remember to clear the phone charging cords off the floor; they are small enough to get sucked into the roller.
Oh the suffering of trying to understand teenagers. Is it a subject that she wants to discuss? When love interests text, the responses are instant but some of mine can linger unanswered for awhile.
@MomSense: We have a Neato – like a Roomba, but cheaper (half the price of the then-new Roomba) and possibly stupider. But when we bought it ~2 of years ago, it was the top rated model for pet hair. It’s scary how much crap it gets up from what looks to me is a fairly clean floor.

George Axelrod’s unclassifiable satire is one of the oddest Hollywood movies, which over the years has engendered passionate support and derision. For some it’s an incisively bizarre portrait of sixties America, for others it’s a sloppily made, undisciplined mess (with more boom mikes visible in full frame than even Play It Again Sam). However, nothing can dim the luster of the incredibly perverse scene where Tuesday Weld’s horny dad (Max Showalter) practically ejaculates while watching his sexy daughter try on sweaters.

He stood up and told the judge he did not think it was right for two black men to face a jury with no black members on it.
The juror’s words to Criminal Court Judge Cheryl Blackburn earlier this month — confirmed by attorneys and others present in the courtroom — led to the delay of a trial and brought Nashville into a growing national discussion about the diversity of juries.
The action followed a day of jury selection in which defense lawyers accused prosecutors of eliminating potential jurors because of their race, a claim the state denied.
Under precedent set by the U.S. Supreme Court, attorneys cannot excuse potential jurors only because of their race. The formative 1986 case also said people accused of crimes do not have a right to a jury with members of the defendant’s own race.
But some question whether it is a true jury of peers if a person’s race is not represented.
Ludye Wallace, president of the Nashville branch of the NAACP, was not aware of the case until contacted by The Tennessean. But he said race representation on juries was a concern and the NAACP would look into how juries are chosen in Nashville.
“We may need to see if we can raise this issue to make sure that you don’t just remove somebody from the jury selection process based on their race, creed or religion,” he said. “You can’t do that.”

@Mike J: The latitude available to toss jurors is essentially the counterbalance to a lack of sub judice on account of the First Amendment. In England, there’s no real ability for lawyers to remove jurors, but also heavy restrictions on what can be reported about ongoing cases. Trouble is, in the US you end up with something other than “juries of one’s peers”, especially for minority defendants (who have probably pissed off the DA already by not taking a plea).
The US has (mostly) an system of criminal trials that reflects the 18th century English system, complicated by uniquely American constitutional protections. I’ve long believed it’s a terrible fit.
Its pretty standard, by this point, though of course Romney dodged it. But that isn’t the model Bernie was pretending to want to follow
This. That is what just got me about the whole thing — the core — hypocrisy from someone who was such a purist… it almost didn’t matter what was in them. The state primary polls were actually quite accurate, except in RI and Delaware where there were not many polls at all. Still, late polls called the Democratic winner correctly in both of those states.

A Roomba won’t help with clutter (e.g., shoes and backpacks strewn across the floor, etc. — all common in my house too), but it’ll work around it. Nashville juror’s objection on race leads to new trial
Stacey Barchenger
1:24 p.m. CDT April 26, 2016

The close race in Connecticut does not really surprise me. What surprises me is that Sanders isn’t doing better in Pennsylvania. I kind of expected it to be Sanders land in between Pittsburgh and Philly, but Clinton is doing well in the northeast too, around Scranton and Wilkes-Barre and the Poconos.

@Amaranthine RBG: Where is it? I have a little bit on my elbows that usually stays put, but occasionally flares up, gets nasty, and worst case, goes traveling down my arm. Elbow psoriasis like mine is pretty common and I usually don’t have to think about it. Right now the only sign it gives me that is hasn’t gone away is a slight roughness. I’ve had it since I was a teen.
I’m hoping your flare up will be similarly easy to live with! Fingers crossed, take good care of yourself: eating well, sleeping well and drinking enough water will help your body deal with whatever there is to come.

@Elie: I think they’ll bounce back. They can say “the people have spoken” and nominate Trump, then when he goes down, say he wasn’t a real conservative anyway and keep doing what they were doing all along. I don’t think he could have won Pennsylvania, but Sanders’ failure to acknowledge/endorse John Fetterman (who is pulling a substantial amount of the vote) cost him a significant opportunity in the western part of the state.
