Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Let there be snark.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

No one could have predicted…

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

It takes a local party

Building on Betty’s post this morning on how we need to build a leftward pendulum swing at all levels of government and society, I want to endorse and fundraise for promising candidate for Oakland County Commissioner in Michigan:

Charles Gaba is the guy behind ACASignups.net which is the go-to source for all enrollment information about the Exchanges and a very good clearinghouse for lots of other health wonkery.

He is running for County Commissioner in a suburban county in the Detroit metro area where the Presidential top-lines have the county as a lean Democratic area but the local government has a significant Republican presence.  He is doing something about that and I want to help a colleague and a fellow wonk.  So if you can spare a few bucks, help elect a wonky progressive to a county government board:

Here is Charles’ Act Blue link:   https://secure.actblue.com/contribute/page/gaba

Has anyone seen any polling data breaking down by Sanders vs Clinton supporter the percentage who voted in the 2013, 2014 and 2015 elections?

One of the key things that Sander’s campaign has done is to get young people working on political campaigns. Some will not join in Democratic campaigns absent anti-establishment candidates, but some will see that there are establishment candidates working to affect policies that matter. Some will decide to stand for office themselves and win (independent or Democrat).

The 2020 state legislative races are crucial. It’s fortunate that these elections fall in a presidential year – the 2010 redistricting is an important part of why Congress has a Republican majority… For some reason these races were neglected back then. The new DNC chair needs to be working on this immediately after being seated. The funding model for the state organizations needs to change as well – this Victory Fund has bad optics to say the least…

I grew up in Oakland County, and my dad still lives there. Next paycheck, I’ll send Gaba some scratch.

I love “wonky progressives”! As a non-wonk, I am impressed by spread-sheet-reading, stats-knowledgeable, information-rich people who give a shit about other human beings. I think it’s a saintly combination.

Awesome. I’d love to see more “local/regional” candidate plugs on the front page!

    @wmd:
I agree wholeheartedly, and would emphasize the vital importance of voter-sourced funding (via Act Blue) akin to what Sanders has done in the Democratic presidential primary. Such a funding method would 1) reduce/eliminate corporate influence(s) and 2) energize the 18 to 45 cohort to contribute/participate (monetarily and otherwise)….
    I’m sending Gaba a contribution tonight….

I see Gaba lives about a mile from me and is running in my district, so I’ll send him a few bucks. I wish him luck, but this isn’t the best part of OC for a Dem. This district is Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, and most of Bloomfield Township. Upper income, ancestrally Republican. The people aren’t thugs, but are willing to vote for thugs as long as they’re housebroken and don’t scare the children and pets. Maybe this is the year to break the Republican gerrymander of OC, especially with Trump at the top of the ticket.
