One feature of living in the sun-blasted hellscape of Florida, in addition to the giant, flying, indestructible cockroaches and invasive alien reptiles — one of whom has purchased the governorship — is the option to start spring gardening in February.
Our beanstalks are already 11 feet tall! Here’s today’s haul:
The best way to cook these beauties is to sauté them gently in olive oil, add a split garlic clove, then finish them with some lemon zest and pecorino cheese. Unbelievably good.
But tonight, we’re gonna fry some up in beer batter and dip them in homemade boom-boom sauce. What are you having for dinner?
Anyway, open thread!

I like the idea for the beans.
Any ideas for giant, flying, indestructible cockroaches and invasive alien reptiles?

I had cereal last night for dinner. Thinking about repeating myself, myself.

I broke a tooth on a bagel this morning and am sporting a temporary crown. I’ll suck some soup and maybe gum some egg salad for dinner.
It was a really crap day until it was confirmed that Kasich’s finally gotten a clue and has dropped out of the GOP race. Now to get him to reimburse Ohio taxpayers for the almost $3,000,000 we’re forced to pay for his precious security.

Maybe other states considering being bathroom police bigots will stop this shit now.

@Corner Stone:
Endorsed or supported?

So, I have a front bed that’s not supposed to have any actual plantings in it. But it’s where we put our carved pumpkin every Halloween. Recently, some green sprigs started coming up. My mom said, “Hey, you have some squash blossoms there.”
And me, like a dummy, said snidely, “C’mon! That’s just weeds I need to pull. Nothing’s planted there.” She just side-eyed me and mumbled off.
I’ll be damned if they all didn’t start recently sporting squash blossom flowers.
Note to self – listen to the green thumb.

@Mike J: What’s the difference between ‘supporting’ and ‘endorsing’ Trump? Only Kelly Ayotte knows.
“Kelly Ayotte has repeatedly said that she’ll put her political party first by supporting Donald Trump if he is the nominee, and now it is time for Ayotte to just do what she’s been preparing to do for weeks and make her support for Trump official. Ayotte and Trump are clearly in agreement when it comes to critical issues such as their desire to defund Planned Parenthood, undermine Roe v. Wade, and obstruct the Supreme Court confirmation process. And all Granite Staters should be concerned that Ayotte has pledged to support Trump as the nominee, even though national security experts and members of both parties have condemned his foreign policy positions as dangerous to our country’s vital interests.”

I’ve been drinking the tears of #nevertrump supporters all day, so I’ll probably just keep doing that.

I had an epiphany* I have this figured out.
Donald Trump is a GOP cover band. He plays their greatest hits so much better than the originals. Just copying their big hits. No original material at all. But people love those hits so they’ve abandoned the GOP to go dance to The Donald.
Tell me I’m wrong.
*Okay, I stood up too fast and banged my head on a 3,800 lb industrial robot and had to go sit down for a minute.

@Corner Stone: You can fry up the squash blossoms. They go nice with a mess o’ beans cooked in some fatback.

I hope my staying in the race until California won’t hurt Hillary’s chances in the fall. Now that Trump is the guy, everything seems so much more official and serious.

I mentioned in an earlier thread that I love cities and their history. There was a recent news story about Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava, at West 25th and Broadway, that was destroyed in a spectacular and mysterious four-alarm fire on Sunday. The Bowery Boys web site has a cool link on the history of this church, that had been at its location for over 150 years.
There was a bust of Nikola Tesla in front of the church, which disappeared after the fire.
And in 1871, the daughter of Boss Tweed was married there. And the media had a field day with this conspicuous consumption wedding.
The 1 percent always endures.

I said different before, but I changed my mind. And Baud! 2016! campaign gear is awesome. That last batch sure kicked my ass.

“Based on information learned during discovery, the deposition of Mrs. Clinton may be necessary,” Sullivan said in an order on Wednesday. Discovery is the formal name for the evidence-gathering process, which includes depositions.
The order, which came in the course of a lawsuit from conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, leaves open the possibility that Clinton will be forced to answer detailed questions on the eve of her formal selection as the Democratic presidential nominee about her creation of the server.
Any deposition would surely roil the presidential race and force her campaign to confront the issue, which has dogged her for a year.
“You have to take her deposition in this case to fully understand how it was designed and the whys and the what-fors.”
While leaving the door open to Clinton’s eventual deposition, Sullivan on Wednesday ordered at least six current and former State Department employees to answer questions from Judicial Watch, which has filed multiple lawsuits over the Clinton email case.

Judge Emmet G. Sullivan was appointed by President Reagan to the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on October 3, 1984. On November 25, 1991, Sullivan was appointed by President George H. W. Bush to serve as an Associate Judge of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
On June 16, 1994, Judge Sullivan was appointed by President Bill Clinton to serve as United States District Judge for the District of Columbia.
Sullivan presided over Senator Ted Stevens’ trial where his indictment was dismissed when a Justice Department probe found evidence of gross prosecutorial misconduct.[3][4][5]
Sullivan is presiding over a case, Judicial Watch v. IRS,[6] where there is an ongoing investigation into the 2013 IRS controversy, specifically attempting to determine where the “lost” emails of former IRS employee Lois Lerner went

How do Florida residents cope with the giant flying indestructible cockroaches? I visited the state once and fled, never to return; it was either that or take a flamethrower to the entire state of Florida, which would have played hell with your property values. Flying cockroaches are God’s critters, and he can have them. I son’t want to be within a hundred miles of one.
Cockroaches are related to praying mantises. Although if you bring it up, the mantises will frown fiercely at you and quickly change the subject.

@Brachiator: I mentioned the fire last weekend in a comment to Omnes. I always feel sad when churches or holy places burn. Can’t say I knew the church well but I’ve passed it a few times.
Back before I was employed at the School Volunteer Program, the synagogue one of their trustees belonged to burned due to a worker not minding a blowtorch. The synagogue was just about to reopen after a full restoration of the interior and the roof. It took another year (or longer) to rebuild.

@Roger Moore: Here’s a microwave recipe for Szechuan Green Beans with way less oil:
6 cloves garlic
2 slices fresh ginger
2 scallions cut into 2″ lengths
1 T vegetable oil
1 t. red pepper flakes
1 T soy
1 T rice wine vinegar
1 lb. Green beans
Put garlic, ginger and scallions in food processor and process until finely chopped. Put into a 14″ X 11″ dish, add oil and pepper flakes. Cook uncovered for 2 minutes. Stir in remaining ingredients. Cook uncovered for 15 minutes stirring 4 or 5 times.

@NotMax: Agreed – roasting them is the best. Simple olive oil, S&P – so good! Great cold, tossed in a salad. I bought some today for salads over the weekend.
John McLemore
@NotMax:Love the roasting! Also, blanching them in boiling salted water, then into an ice bath works even better if you are going to sautee. This can be done well ahead of time and shortens the sautee time. Keeps them bright green too!
NCSteve
Nonsense. The best way to cook those is to simmer them for hours in a pot with a big piece of salt pork.

I haven’t even started planting my flat beans here up north, but I’m still eating the spicy ones I canned last summer. (canned with garlic and few flakes of cabe ravit).

Not sure about tonight’s dinner but crop wise, we’ve only got some cherry tomatoes and serrano peppers growing in our pots here near Mouse Town. I already harvested one crop of serranos while they were still green and made Jeff Mauro’s giardiniera recipe with them. This next batch I’m leaving on the vine until they are red and ready to be turned into a Louisiana style hot sauce I made last year. Good stuff, Maynard.

Follow up: for tonight’s dinner, I ended up nuking a couple of brats I sauteed in beer the other night (left overs rule!). A bit of purple onions and yellow mustard…mmm. Washed it down with some Alexia onion rings and some Publix butter pecan ice cream.
