DOJ and North Carolina

by John Cole|  May 9, 20164:35 pm| 176 Comments

This post is in: Gay Rights are Human Rights, Religious Nuts 2

FacebookTweetEmail

Loreta Lynch just spoke and basically put a stiletto heel in Gov. McCrory’s ass, telling them where to stick his lawsuit:

The U.S. government filed a lawsuit Monday against North Carolina saying that state entities were in violation of provisions in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, Title IX the Education Acts Amendment of 1972 and the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act that outlaw discrimination on the basis of sex. The lawsuit comes hours after Gov. Pat McCrory sued the Justice Department, asking a federal court to rule whether the state’s so-called bathroom bill violated U.S. law.

She was openly contemptuous of these knuckle draggers, and offered a full throated defense of transgendered persons. Good. As I noted elsehwere, I simply do not understand these bigoted culture warriors, because I just don’t have the energy to be such a busybody to tell everyone how to live their life. I don’t understand why who pisses where is such a big deal, and it isn’t because of men perving on little girls in bathrooms. There are already laws against that.

I’m also sick of the argument that liberals are trying to “normalize” X, where X is whatever the reich wing jeebus freaks have decided is the target du jour, whether it be homosexuality, transgenders, etc. Homosexuality and transgender individuals are normal. It happens naturally. It’s not something that happens as commonly as heterosexuality, but it is quite normal.

When these jackasses say they don’t want something like homosexuality normalized, what they mean is that they don’t want to have to stop brutalizing homosexuals and transgenders both physically and emotionally and socially. They want them back in the closet, so they don’t have to confuse their pretty little heads with something that scares them or that they don’t understand. What they really mean is not that they don’t want homosexuality “normalized,” what they mean is that they want to continue to treat normal people like shit for no reason or because Jeebus told them to. Or because it makes them feel superior or because they see political gain. Or because they are sociopaths. Or because they themselves are having feelings for the same sex or are confused about their gender identity and it scares the living shit out of them because they are surrounded by people like them who have spent their entire lives telling that that is wrong. Or some combination of all of the above.

So fuck them. You know what I would like normalized? People minding their own fucking business, and not worrying about who is fucking who or which disgusting fucking rest stop bathroom someone decides to take a shit in. If it’s not happening in your bedroom, shut the fuck up. It ain’t your business. If Laverne Cox demands to take a shit in your home’s bathroom, you have a say. Until then, shut the fuck up. That’s what I would like normalized.

Somewhat OT but on the righteousness theme: I just went off on a friend’s facebook thread about David Brooks, nearly losing that friend in the process (“obsequious lickspittle” might have been a bit much). I’ve trained my nose to sniff out Brooks’ particular brand of perfumed sanctimonious bullshit, but can I get a link or two for the layman to read that might punch through Brook’s oily sheen of gentility? My first thought is Charlie Pierce, but he kind of has his own problems in getting past his own cleverness and to the point.

Just a usage note: at this point, it’s better to use “transgender” as an adjective, not a noun.

So it’s better to say “transgendered people,” not “transgenders.”

I know Cole meant no harm and my trans friends don’t get offended when someone who doesn’t know the proper usage makes this mistake, but I do want to spread the word that we should be saying “transgendered person/people,” not “transgenders”. :)

Several months back before this was a “thing”, a woman on the plane was shouting on her phone about her southern baptist bible classes. Then she started crying about men in our little girls bathrooms, and what can we do to protect the children. Seems like these concentrated efforts to get out the religious vote from the devout is really having trouble finding a subject to scare the rubes. High water mark for these campaigns had to be same sex marriage bans, which I am sure by coincidence, was a thing in the 2004 Presidential.

Aside from their sociopathic disregard for anyone who is not they, it seems they’ve never actually seen the inside of a ladies’ room. There is no way to accidentally see anything unless you crawl under the door ( though I wouldn’t put it past them) and there are already laws about displaying the nether parts on purpose on the books. Just foolishness. I’m expecting the next wave: where they decide to ban public facilities altogether because you just can’t be too careful, can you.

I share the opinion that for the crumbs who actually passed the law, the whole transgender thing is just a flapping red flag to rile up the backwoods rubes. What they really care about is all the rest of the crap they sandwiched into the passed-in-twelve-hours bill, killing all local minimum wage and discrimination laws in the state.

And for me, William Schallert will always be Nils Barris, the doofus bureaucrat from the classic Star Trek episode The Trouble With Tribbles.

I think it’s interesting that while the bills insist that you can only use a certain bathroom if you have certain genitals, in practice, the people they actually harass are people whose gender presentation seems nonstandard (women who they think are too butch, mostly). They seem confused even about the facts of the matter.

“The blacks” and “the gays” have both made this argument for a long time. Black people. Gay people. I’m all in favor of calling people whatever they like, but I sometimes feel stupid if it isn’t grammatical. This is easy to do, and actually follows the rules of the english language. Respect for people, respect for grammar, it’s win/win.

I do not know why NC Republicans decided they were going to be the state to whip up right-wing outrage in an election year.

They could’ve left the embarrassment to some other state that was looking to pass this kind of law anyway.

Basically this just seems like something for Republicans to drive up Fundie turnout in the year of Trump, like the banning gay marriage bills worked between 2004 and 2012.

When was the last time you heard of a transgender person preying on children, in restrooms, or any other forum? Being a minister in a Christian tradition is a hell of a lot bigger red flag for potential child molesting behavior than not matching whatever cousin Jeb’s ideal of gender identity is. Hell, being a U.S. legislator makes you far more likely to have engaged in deviant sexual acts with minors than anything about gender identity. Can we get a bill outlawing priests and congresspeople from public restrooms? It would make a hell of a lot more sense.

The owner of the business said his wife is a Trump supporter but he’s very much against him. They both tried to tell me their individual votes don’t matter but I think I convinced them that’s not true, there have been a number of elections in our area that have been decided by less than a couple hundred votes. I handed the assistant two registration forms. I also mentioned that our governor recently issued an executive order allowing all felons to vote once they’re done with their sentences and parole in case they knew anyone who was in that situation. I didn’t want to insult them by making them think I thought they might be in that situation. They’ll be back tomorrow to finish with the tree and I’ll follow up to make sure they’re following up.

I would love to follow SG on the B of F. Would he mind if you gave me the name to search? (Edit: I don’t know his real name, and his FB account is not under “Soonergrunt” or any of its obvious variations.)

that is where the term “shit detail” was born. note the black belt. this is a dumb dogface who obviously did not know the secret. if you carefully stack those drums into a pyramid, and light one on the bottom, it will vaporize the diesel in the other barrels, and create a vortex. no standing around and stirring the shit. however, if you use jp-4, the result can be quite impressive. trust me on that…

Back about 1969 I flew into Amsterdam & needed to use the toilet after finally getting through customs. The sign showed they were downstairs & when I got there there were 2 doors so I went in the one marked, “HEREN”. I was in kind of a hurry when I hit the stall and not paying attention. As I sat there I saw a pair of womens shoes go by & thought I must have mis-seen. Then there was another pair & distinct female voices. I thought “Oh crap! First day in a foreign country and I am going to get arrested as a perv!”. Well, there was nothing for it so I just finished & prepared to wash my hands as fast as possible. When I opened the stall door I realized there was only one room, it had 2 doors for reasons that I am sure made sense when they did it. It was my introduction to a much more relaxed attitude about many things in Europe.

@Regnad Kcin: well, yes, the corporate humans are rather a battering ram over all, and the religio-corporate people are entirely trying to even further expand their over-arching rights and abilities to define all reality for all for all times. Should have been more specific. Speaking of which, for the addicts, Ammon Bundy seems to be setting himself up as the self-appointed enforcer and mind-reader of Thomas and Scalia. — he’s anothe rof the tribe of super-supreme-court forces (see also McCrory), delicately picking which parts of the smorgasbord of national and religious law they currently feel like obeying.

    Cute moment in WoW.

Quest is to free an orc who is chained to a post next to an outhouse, the chain being only long enough to let him keep carrying shovelfuls of muck from buckets and dump the stuff into a festering pit.

Once the player gets the key to unlock his shackles, the orc shouts (paraphrasing):

“Free! By the souls of my ancestors I will have my revenge and dine on your entrails, Gul’dan!”

Then, more quietly, “But first, I have to wash my hands.”

    And he wanders off.

Guys may not pee in the sink at home but they did in the mens room at the gas station I worked at while in HS. I know, because it was part of my job to clean the restrooms. And no, the womens restroom was no better although I don’t think anyone peed in the sink. All humans are like all life forms, you gotta go, you find a place (which may just be right where you are), you go.

And I STILL don’t like African American. In addition to being clunky, it’s not particularly accurate. I was born to a Jamaican man and American woman. My wife was born in Alabama to two Americans. African roots does not make one African.
President Obama is legitimately African American. Most of us are not.

HB2 is working exactly as planned. Stirring up resentment of Those People and the Federal Gummint so as to get the rubes to the polls and overcome McCrony’s galloping unpopularity. It was never about bathrooms.

Uh, they’re just trying to keep alive an issue they think is divisive enough to drive the frightened folks to the polls. Just like always. Remember ebola in the last cycle? This strategy might not work as well as it did in the past given the possibility for open mindedness provided by some parts of the internet.

    @Reggie Mantle:

    and overcome McCrony’s galloping unpopularity

But McCrony wasn’t massively unpopular. He was considered a sockpuppet for Art Pope and a rubber stamp for the awful GOP supermajorities in the GA, but his approve/disapprove has been about 35/45 for a while, which is not good but not terrible. Clearly he’s decided that instead of asserting some kind of autonomy over a legislature that ain’t going anywhere because of its gerrymander, he’s going to ride on their train and hope the bigot base shows up to keep him in his job.

Isn’t it, ” People minding their own fucking business, and not worrying about who is fucking whom“?
Or have I go that backwards, and it should be “whom is fucking who”?
Y’know what? Fuck the objective case.
