Cyndi Lauper has a new album out. It’s a country album.
Oddly, I’ve been listening to a lot of Cyndi Lauper music and other music from 1984, when she was the biggest star that year. At least the obviously biggest female star until the very end of the year.
She’s never not been awesome.

Unless there’s a state primary someone feels very strongly about, I think sending money to Vote Riders and similar GOTV organizations makes more sense than supporting specific candidates at the moment.

Before tonight, Sanders needed 605 delegates out of 914 remaining, 66.1925%
After tonight, Sanders needs 591 delegates out of 885 remaining, 66.77966%
He’s further behind after “winning”.

@guachi: maybe the new album is why the local pop station has played “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” the last few days, seemingly out of the blue.

Been fiddling about with a 1st gen Nexus 7, an update a while back made it slow as molasses but I was just using it as a digital clock and it handled that ok so I was good with it. Brought it into the front room to serve tunes via bluetooth to an Echo, loaded it up with mp3s but it wasn’t handling that, so I’ve been doing factory resets all afternoon, trying to find a minimal install. I’ve been trying not to kick the kittehs.

@jeffreyw: You could always try a different ROM; check on XDA, even the older Nexus’ have pretty good support.

@Trentrunner: A bit tough for us. Local money for president and senate are not terribly productive. If you have a competitive house race, give it there, otherwise focus on one of the competitive senate races. Act Blue like Zinsky is a good suggestion – they’ll funnel it into competitive races. Vote Riders another good suggestion.

opiejeanne
@Omnes Omnibus: Wow. Thank you. When I asked I was not being a snot; I’ve heard him play quite a few non-Classical pieces, Beatles tunes among other things, and he throws himself into them with what appears to be joy. Almost as if because he’s now famous his parents can’t keep him from playing what he wants, although I have no idea how rigid his parents were about it. Some college music departments were rigidly divided into tracks in the 70s and allowed no crossing over between their jazz program and their classical. There was a little of that snobbery in my college but it got nowhere because I was in the first graduating class, all five of us.

I can’t remember where I read the analysis, maybe Nate Silver, but supposedly the place your money will be the most effective is the DCCC and the DSCC, if you can stomach the fact that they’re going to send some of it to people you hate.

This song should be play at least once at the convention in Philadelphia
I'mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet
@Redshift: I usually send the DSCC and DCCC some money (if I can spare it) when they have their double or sometimes triple-match at the end of the month. It sounds kinda like a scam (surely an effective match system wouldn’t care when the money comes in), but they do need enough money to get the message out. I haven’t given to them yet this cycle.
I also try to donate to candidates in my state (VA) and in other races when it seems like it will help.
But right now it’s important to make sure that people have what they need to vote. Many states have deadlines 30 days before the elections, which would seem to allow plenty of time, but making sure people have what they need before then is the hard part.
Cheers,
Scott.

Catching up on last nights TDS etc.
A question for the ladies who may be reading: if a man gets to 40 and has never been married or in a serious long-term relationship, is there the general opinion that they’re damaged goods?
opiejeanne
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Funny how that works. We are having one of those non-binding primaries right now too, in WA. Not sure what they do with the information or why we do it that way after the stupid caucus here. Our caucus is “closed” but you can register as a Democrat at the door.
Mnemosyne
@sigaba:
Asking for a friend, are we? ;-)
Opinion that’s totally my own: only if you insist on dating women who are younger than yourself and/or who have never been married themselves. If you’re willing to date women your age who have teenage kids, they may appreciate that you come without baggage (especially if you can casually say that you’ve dealt with your major baggage through therapy or whatever).
Omnes Omnibus
@sigaba: Not one of the ladies, but everyone who reaches 40 is damaged in some way.

@Omnes Omnibus: I’m really not talking about getting married, frankly the concept seems so alien to me– it’s easier for me to imagine becoming an astronaut than to imagine myself married, I just don’t think people take it seriously anymore. And I’m not opposed to it either, just the idea, in the abstract, doesn’t add up to me.
I just mean like, will I find a relationship where I’m loved and respected, will that even be a remote possibility, or will I be leftovers…
Prescott Cactus
@Omnes Omnibus: Sorry it didn’t work. I drove thru the chapel in Vegas at 42. Been 13 years and best thing that ever happened to me.
Damage is the thing. Consider the shape of a 40 year old car. As a kid whose folks split up after I got of high school (nice divorce, friends till death, all that) I just never wanted to get married. Then I found someone I couldn’t stand being away from. That “better half” thing.
You never know when lightning will strike.
MomSense
@sigaba:
Isn’t everyone damaged goods?
Davebo
@sigaba:
Well that’s pretty obvious! But the fact that at 37 you’re seeking advice about women think of a 40 year old never married guy implies you’re worried about a window of opportunity. Then again, I could be wrong. Happens a lot!
Best advice, for what it’s worth. When you’re ready for it to happen it will happen. And when it does, in my experience, it’s better than winning the lottery. Or maybe I was just lucky.
Omnes Omnibus
@sigaba: It depends on the person. Age doesn’t enter into it.

@MomSense: Sounds like a socratic paradox.
I'mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet
@sigaba: Don’t rush things. Few things are worse than trying to push a relationship too early.
If marriage makes sense, there’s plenty of time for it to happen for you. If not, don’t worry about it. Find love where you can, and if you’re not finding it yet, then look in wider circles. Being older and knowing who you are and what you want is an advantage – you’re not as brainwashed about what love is “supposed to be like” as youngsters are. That knowledge is an advantage.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Scott.

@sigaba: I never in a million years thought I would get married. When you are ready, it will happen if you want it to. If you are open to being loving and respecting it can happen.
Marriage isn’t a partnership. It’s not 50% / 50%. It’s a contest. It’s going to 110% – 110%. Doing more than you would do for yourself. Both participants actively trying to out do the other to make life simple. At some point we realized we were actually engaged in this process. We laughed when we figured it out.
I didn’t get married because I wanted to, or had to, it just seemed like what we should do. We reached that point on the horizon where the next step was a wedding.
Pretty cliche sounding shit, I’ll admit. It’s real though.

@MomSense: If you saw it on Politico, I think it’s a subtle jab on their part. I’m starting to see jokes (or the worst possible photos) in their Trump articles.
