Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

He really is that stupid.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

We will not go back.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Who benefits from Trump's tax plan?

Billionaires—and millionaires like him. https://t.co/COJ4TPXvm2 pic.twitter.com/o0V6GAgBsM

“… and millionaires like him.” That’s gonna leave a mark.

Apart from keeping firmly in mind that we have real enemies, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

92 to 45 in Kentucky, actually saw somebody refer to it as Clinton up big. No. When a state with 4.5 million has fewer than 150 votes in, nobody is “up”.

“… and millionaires like him.” That’s gonna leave a mark.

Only a very small one. That’s the whole point of needling somebody: the pain is out of proportion to the apparent damage. If you hadn’t pointed it out, I never would have noticed that little dig- but you can bet that Trump did. If Hillary can keep poking him in his most vulnerable spot- the ego- she can goad him into more public stupidity. Very good move.

Lynn notes that she and Sir Evelyn—who also own homes in New York, London, and Bedfordshire, England—host family and friends on the island “all summer long.” Their extended brood includes five grown children (from their previous marriages), three grandchildren, and everyone’s assorted partners and pals. What’s more, they’re avid hosts and active in politics (Lynn is an ardent Hillary Clinton supporter), so the house needed to be both spacious and flexible, as comfortable for just the two of them as for entertaining a large group. So, CNN reported that prior to the Nevada caucus meeting. The head organizer for the Sander’s campaign told their delegates not to leave the convention hall until they got word from the campaign. No wonder they started to riot when security started to shut the building down. They were going to simply stomp their feet until they got their own way. Keep in mind, that Hillary won the Nevada caucus on February 20th.

I must say, it’s rather fascinating to see Bernie Sanders in the process of destroying any influence and good will he’d built up with his campaign.

What an idiot response to the NV mess. Especially pissing off Harry Reid. You don’t piss off Reid and live to tell about it. My guess is that come January, especially if the Dems have a solid Senate majority, Bernie will be out in the cold (even with Reid having left the Senate).

I was a Bernie supporter until the NYDN article so I’ll help him out. Here’s what your press release about NV should have said:

“I am very sorry to the members of the Democratic party in Nevada who have been subject to harassment by my supporters. While I admire the passion my supporters have shown, I wholeheartedly disown their actions. I do not support threats of violence, doxxing people or vandalism in my campaign for the nomination. I ask that those who have done these things in my name consider the harm they have done, not just to me, or my campaign, but to the Democratic party and themselves.

To Roberta Lang (sp?), I offer my most sincere apologies. It horrifies me that my supporters made you feel unsafe in any capacity. Again, I disown their actions and tactics and hopefully this statement is enough to make sure anything like this never happens again.

    Sen. Bernie Sanders”

How fucking hard would it be? I fought plenty of people months ago about Bernie on this board. This though the non apology with the ultimatum, it’s pretty clear he can’t play well with others. This is PR 89, not even 101.

@AnotherBruce: That’s standard practice for a caucus — because of the weirdness of them, the advice given is to stay forever until the campaign says the voting is over.

The Nevada caucus was racing at the end to get through all the non-delegate business to try to finish all the voting (party platform, for example) before they were kicked out after being there for 14+ hours.

@AnotherBruce: Yeah, the key is that more Clinton delegates showed up than Sanders delegates for the third tier (state caucus). Sanders actually had more at the 2nd tier (county caucus) but couldn’t convert them through. The Clinton majority was super small though.

Sanders is concentrating on the 64 delegates who were blocked (bad contact info, not a Democrat, or not a registered voter)… although 14 showed up. 6 were credentialed after their information was fixed. 8 were not allowed because they weren’t registered voters or registered Democrats. 50 didn’t show up… along with hundreds of other delegates (both Clinton and Sanders). In addition, 8 Clinton delegates were also blocked for the same reason and didn’t show up. Both campaigns were given this information before the caucus.

What angers me is that the Sanders campaign is just lying about the delegates who were blocked, why they were blocked, and implying that they were there but were unable to vote which is how Clinton won.

Well, that and caucuses — it’s stupid to have three separate days for voting, with the final day being over twelve hours long.

After is more obviously bad, but there’s more uncertainty if he blows up before. There’s the whole question of whether they can force him out at the convention and whether attempts to try would blow up in their faces. Basically, I think a Three Mile Island-sized meltdown (i.e. big enough to do damage but potentially containable) would be better before the convention, since it might wind up splitting the party between people who want to try forcing him out and ones who still want to back him, and that’s better when there’s still a convention for it to play out in. A Chernobyl-sized meltdown (i.e. complete destruction) would be better after the convention, because there wouldn’t be any obvious way of picking a replacement. Actually, the very best would be during his acceptance speech at the convention, because that’s when he’ll have the most media attention.

New York would be the first state to ban the declawing of cats under a legislative proposal that has divided veterinarians.

Several vets — along with a spokescat named Rubio — came to the state Capitol on Tuesday to lobby for the ban. They say the declawing procedure, which involves cutting through bone, tendon and nerves to amputate the first segment of a cat’s toes, is unnecessary and cruel. Australia, Britain and several European countries already ban the practice. It’s also illegal in Los Angeles and some other California cities.

“It’s a disfiguring, inhumane and misguided procedure,” said Eileen Jefferson, an Ulster County veterinarian who does not perform the procedure. She said about 25 percent of cats will be declawed.

While Jefferson and the other vets discussed the bill at a press conference in the Capitol, Rubio roamed the room, sniffing the reporters and occasionally offering a meow as greeting. The 11-year-old Abyssinian has his claws but chose not to use them on the journalists.

The state’s Veterinary Medical Society opposes the legislation, saying the surgical procedure can often save cats with destructive scratching behavior from being euthanized. In a memo of opposition, the society argues that declawing is a decision best left to cat owners and veterinarians and not lawmakers.

Have to say, I’m not only in total agreement with what you wrote, I’m very disappointed in the fact that he didn’t write it already. I DO think Harry Reid is right–Bernie Sanders is BETTER than that.

But I really believe that somewhere, somehow, someone is not letting him be fully cognizant of what happened, and how bad it’s making the Sanders campaign look that he hasn’t said that. Somewhere, somehow, someone in the campaign is advising him to dodge addressing the behaviors of those delegates, to focus on the “bigger issues” and make no statements that show “weakness”. Even though I personally think the whole incident in NV was bullshit “intra-NV Democratic Party Dysfunction” with enough blame to go around in terms of how stupid their rules are, and that it really amounts to a hill of beans in terms of it’s reflection on what he stands for and what 99% of his supporters care about, the fact that it has become a more salient episode means Sanders should have demonstrated leadership here.

That being said, it’s over. It’s cool he stays in, but he needs to walk that line and focus on the long term, stay clean.

Our cat has two scratching posts, one upstairs and one downstairs. Also, because my wife buys fabric by the yard, we have the thick cardboard it wraps around. That makes a third scratching post that the cat enjoys demolishing.

But I read a very lengthy diary over at the GOS from a delegate who was there and it seems clear that the chair throwing and death threats and booing weren’t justified at all. Bernie’s been in Puerto Rico and I suspect that he hasn’t been fully briefed on what happened. But his campaign is being vilified even at the GOS, which isn’t a good sign because that’s been pro-Bernie for months. In my view, he’s got about three more weeks to continue his campaign and try to win votes, but after that, he should be gracious and a unifier. I’m pretty sure that he will do so.

If Bernie is being kept in the dark by his campaign staff, that’s still on him; he’s the one who chose those people to advise him. If he’s receiving information and advice that’s that terrible, it speaks very poorly of his ability to pick advisers. Pat Leahy’s still a good Senator (& from all reports a gentleman).

If you’re that angry at Sanders, you can look forward to Al Giordano’s run against him in 2018. Seriously — as Giordano points out, losing a presidential run seriously damages a politician’s hometown credit, even when it’s not the candidate’s fault they got skunked. Somebody is going to run against Bernie in 2018, and it’s not gonna be fun for the old man.

@Feathers: We have ended up with a couple of declawed cats via the older cat adoption route, and never would declaw a cat.

That said, the vets know what they’re talking about – people really will euthanize cats if they can’t declaw them. Someone who would do that is a terrible person, but I don’t want to make believe it won’t happen, and it’s nearly impossible to figure out ahead of time whether a person adopting a cat would do such an awful thing.

I did my Oregon voting three weeks ago when my ballot came. National mail-in voting is probably the only way the US can prevent voter suppression by one party.

    @Elie:

I think Trump can destroy Trump. He cannot look weak to his followers. Its just figurin which set up to get him there and unable to escape. He’s never had this much attention or opportunity to screw up by the number of balls in the air. For him, it will be weakness… looking lame, having to back down

I dunno. He’s backed down about lots of things already and none of his voters have cared. Like minimum wage, about which he’s said it should go up, down, and be turned over to the states all within 24 hours.

So no, changing his mind/backing down is not a problem for Trump.
