Revenant: A visible ghost or animated corpse that is believed to have returned from the grave to terrorize the living.
Revanchism (from French: revanche, “revenge”) is the political manifestation of the will to reverse territorial losses incurred by a country, often following a war or social movement used since the 1870s…

T.V. viewership is much more fragmented than 40 years ago. There is never again going to be a show or episode almost everyone watches at the same time.
It is hard to read more into it than that, in my opinion.
Assuming “Roots” is available On-Demand by my cable company that is probably how I will watch it.
I for one watched OKC complete a choke job in the play-offs.

In the 1970s, it would have been less about hurting white folks’ sensibilities and more about what Standards & Practices would allow. It was still pretty traumatic to watch as a kid: people being whipped, screaming children being separated from their mothers, (strongly implied) rape. Unfortunately, now that there are more than three networks, you’re never going to see “Roots”-like numbers for a TV movie again, at least not in the sense of everyone in the country sitting down to watch the same movie at the same time. IIRC, it’s still the all-time record holder for miniseries ratings.
And you know how I keep telling all you guys that the cultural moment is against Trump this year? I just saw the trailer for the new Matthew McConaughey movie, Free State of Jones. Trump may be surrounded by a very vocal group of assholes, but they’re a smaller group than they like to think.

The clip is wrenching. The thing is, the shit might be real under a Trump admin, if you replace African-Americans with Hispanics and Muslims.
And probably happen with African-Americans, or probably for that matter, anybody who objects or protests anything Trump. Except won’t be official Trump policy, at least until he can get who wants on the courts, just beatings and insults as part of spontaneous patriotic actions performed by patriotic Trump-Americans.
Unless of course Trump’s Great Wall and Deportation and Muslim ban were damned lies bellowed by a damned liar to get support of racists and xenophobes. In which case, most of the crap that comes down will be spontaneous patriotic actions performed by patriotic Trump Americans.

The number of lynching spiked in the late 19-teens through 20s. A very clear connection can be made between the Southern ‘gentleman’ in the White House and that increase. Wilson ordered the firing of blacks working for the Federal government and baring their hiring. He also ordered the strict segregation of the Army. There were other words and deeds but the message was clear from the POTUS himself. I would not be surprised to see the exact same sort of horror show under a President Drumpf.

What I always wonder about, when I see videos like the one in the OP (or older pictures of a crowd around a lynching), is how the crowd of approving on-lookers and/or participants in the brutality raised their kids, because if that kind of entrenched racism kept getting handed down throughout the generations America would be a lot more institutionally racist than it is today.
I’m surprised because somewhere along the line the bigots lost their influence on their kids or grandkids on down the line.
What it amounts to is how badly conservatives have lost the Culture War.
Gay people are no longer officially gross. “Modern Family” has an openly gay couple, with an adopted daughter, as main characters. 25 years ago Dan Quayle was bitching about Murphy Brown getting knocked up, while still a single woman.
Interracial marriage does not even warrant attention, it has become so normal, within the realm of polite society.
Yes racism and racists still exist, but it sometimes feels like Trump is one of the last gasps of the Culture Warriors to try and claw back into the spotlight they once had.
At some level they must realize they are losing the battle against the forces of tolerance and acceptance.

@jl: They’ve already begun issuing veiled threats that he better deliver on what they want. Alex Jones went on a rant that was one part all in support for Trump one part warning him that if he doesn’t deliver the goods than they’ll turn on him. The folks that are expecting him to somehow establish white nationalism are not interacting with reality in the same way that the rest of us are. And that’s not to say they are mentally ill or delusional. Rather they’ve accepted, adopted, acculturated to, or been socialized to an understanding of history and politics and economics and religion that, at best, casually intersects with that of the rest of Americans.

@Mnemosyne: In this case it also doesn’t help that its on three of four channels at the same time. I understand why they did that – to ensure a greater chance of getting people to watch it and since all the channels are owned by the same company it makes sense, but that too will dilute the numbers. In order to actually figure out the viewership you’d have to tally across all three or four channels and the On Demand viewings.

@smedley the uncertain: Real. It actually happened. How much they’ll fictionalize the story up for the movie is another matter.

@jl: Of that there is no doubt. He’s been working that angle since he declared. About being treated fairly and the game being rigged. GOP officials, as in people working in official capacity for the GOP – on Congressional and Senatorial staffs, RNC, that sort of thing – took Manafort’s briefing to the Senatorial GOP Chiefs of Staff last week as an example of this: that Trump is laying the groundwork to, among other things, blame the GOP and RNC if he looses. The whole “the system is rigged against me (Trump)” is also designed to reinforce this angle. He couldn’t have lost, all those decent Americans supporting him couldn’t have lost, he and they were cheated. Victory was stolen.

@Major Major Major Major: At one point in the mid 1990s NASA put out advertisements across Florida for anyone that might be hanging onto the old early 1980s 5 and 1/4 floppy drived IBM PCs. They were asking for people to donate them at the Kennedy Space Center because, apparently, the software programs for the shuttle program were done on these machines and had never been upgraded as the tech went from 5 and 1/4 floppies to those 3 and a 1/2 inch hard cased disks to CDs. NASA was hoping to cannablize these donor computers to maintain their systems.

You would prefer it if they booted over the internet?
As long as they could still get parts to keep them running, why on earth would you replace a system that you know reliably controls nuclear missiles with a completely unproven system?
NotMax
@Adam L. Silverman
Endemic problem is that in the time it takes for specs to be prepared, bids to be solicited, comment periods, etc., tech has advanced a couple of generations so what is finally installed is borderline obsolete from the get-go.
Other side of the coin is design which exceeds the tech capabilities. Case in point, the F-35 (I know, I know), rushed into service while incapable of firing its guns – estimates are another 4 years of software development to allow that to occur.
Then there’s whatever that boondoggle computer system the F.B.I. ordered and signed on to under the last administration was, which had to be scrapped as total junk before the last part was delivered.

Much of Canova’s campaign literature emphasizes his opposition to the nuclear agreement with Iran, a position shared by many in the district’s large and active Jewish population. Wasserman Schultz backed the deal.
Adam L Silverman
@hovercraft: This is going to be an issue. Given the district, Wasserman-Schultz went a bit out on a limb to back the President’s play. I still think she’s not been a very good legislator, but I’m not sure Canova is much better. And, of course, if things get muddied up enough with attacks on her from the right, this being Florida, he could win the primary and lose the district to the Republican challenger.

I am not sure how DWS kept the DNC gig after 2014, but primarying people in relatively conservative districts from the Left is not helping.
The Left lacks the money, media domination, wing nut welfare circuit equivalent to give ex-pols a cushy post-political gig, and most importantly a central congregating point, with which to direct their adherents to action.
The genius of the Movement Conservatives was to realize you have millions of voters, who every week go to church. Get church leaders on board and you start getting their followers on board with your agenda. And an army of dedicated voters is born.
I just cannot picture how you recreate that sort of group think on the Left or have any carrots and sticks, with which to cajole anyone, as the Left lacks the money to entice or threaten anyone.
BillinGlendaleCA

I met “N” in 1984, by then he was working for IBM. He still had his original computer that used 8-inch floppies. He told me the machine still ran but you couldn’t do very much with it. In his living room he had a IBM 360 that was connected to his office in Yorktown Heights, one or two other portable (lugable) computers, one of which we set up for me to use. He had a token ring under the couch so he could play with it and learn how to really use them. (He was committed to teach himself whatever he could to get ahead.) Okay, that’s 32 years ago. A few of the old computer systems are used for cryptography, and are the only allowed way to generate those keys/codes/pads/etc. However that’s a very few systems; and besides, “then get your
