Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

It’s the corruption, stupid.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

The revolution will be supervised.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

People are weird.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

You cannot shame the shameless.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

I am surprised that I have not seen too much food chain trash talk as sharks eat penguins, but here is an open thread.

If anything I will root for San Jose because fuck Pittsburgh.

If you put sharks on ice, though, they can’t breathe, but penguins thrive, so there’s that.

    Go Pens!

I guess one could watch game 1 of the finals of a sport that few people care about, or game 7 of the semi-finals of professional basketball. Decisions, decisions…

Contra fellow Bolts fan Paul W above, I’m rooting for the Pens now. If the team that beat us goes on to win, that seems to validate our loss, in a way; at least we were defeated by a REAL team, not some jumped-up pretender who couldn’t close the deal. Plus, it would make Cole and Geg happy, which seems a laudable goal since I can find no more joy in hockey this year.

No one in Pittsburgh gives a shit about basketball. Not even when we had a team. Hockey is vastly superior for pure entertainment value and excitement. Pro basketball is horrid. Haven’t sat through a game since the early 80s. Too boring. College ball is 1000 times better, IMHO.

@efgoldman: BU seems lost without Poulin; the sort of player who can score OT gold medal winning goals in consecutive Olympics can cover a lot of holes. And with nine graduating seniors this year, Durocher has his work cut out for him rebuilding.

I used to like Basketball, long ago in High School. My High School was in the tournament every year, was runner-up / came in second by losing in OT on year, and won the state championship one year in 3 OTs. That year I couldn’t utter a work for a week, I yelled my voice out.

But then after I got home from the Navy, one job I had was Production Assistant at the local Public TV station. As PAs we did a little of everything, running a sound board, setting lights for a theatrical production we videotaped for broadcast, running cameras for various boring things.

One boring thing was running cameras for the HS BB championship. I ran a camera for either 4 games a day for 3 days or 3 games a day for 4 days. I forget which exactly. I knew nothing about most of the schools, and the BB quality seemed low compared to the games I had watched as a HS student, where I played in the PEP band and watched the whole season.

Bu the end of the second year of doing a dozen games straight had burned the Basketball Viewing brain cells out of my brain. Now I hate Basketball at every level, HS, College, NBA, National Teams in the Olympics. Hates ’em all. Don’t watch them.

Years ago we went to a state press organization annual conference, with the Mrs, who worked in news at the time. I had no races in the awards hunt and so left the banquet when they started handing out awards, to watch a hockey game on the great TV sets and cable system available at this resort we were staying at.

WE didn’t get a TV signal you could really watch hockey with, invisible puck was a deal breaker for most people. So I sat diwn with a 6-pack of beer to watch hockey, and gradually realized that the banquet had resulted in food poisoning…… yuck!

I sat on the toilet with a plastic wastecan between my legs every 20 minutes 5 eruptive minutes, drank a big glass of water, laid back down in bed for 15 minutes, then did it again. I was pretty tired by the time Mrs J got home to our room, and it didn’t stop then. About 8 am I was done, napped a little longer while Mrs J checked us out of the room, packed up our stuff, and was started the 4 hour drive back home… That experience appears to have severely shrunk my interest in hockey.

Also, when we stopped for fuel, Mrs J got a pepperoni roll and an orange pop – I was OK with the pepperoni roll, ght the smell of that orange pop nearly did me in. I rolled my window down and hung out in the slipstream like a dog, and made it OK. But i can’t tough standard Orange Pop to this day, 30 years later. Hockey too, just no fun.

So Football and Baseball is all I have left.
