There are some impressive playoff beards on the ice tonight.
PaulWartenberg2016
I refuse to watch now that the Bolts are out.
If anything I will root for San Jose because fuck Pittsburgh.
Tinare
If you put sharks on ice, though, they can’t breathe, but penguins thrive, so there’s that.
Go Pens!
father pussbucket
Hard to believe no one’s shared this yet, but just in case …

I guess one could watch game 1 of the finals of a sport that few people care about, or game 7 of the semi-finals of professional basketball. Decisions, decisions…
Troublesome Carp fka Geeno
@Gin & Tonic: ….. that few people care about

@father pussbucket:
Heh, GMTA. I emailed that an hour or so ago to Anne Laurie and Betty Cracker, figuring one or other of them would surely find an opportunity to FP it soon.
Betty Cracker
Contra fellow Bolts fan Paul W above, I’m rooting for the Pens now. If the team that beat us goes on to win, that seems to validate our loss, in a way; at least we were defeated by a REAL team, not some jumped-up pretender who couldn’t close the deal. Plus, it would make Cole and Geg happy, which seems a laudable goal since I can find no more joy in hockey this year.

@Betty Cracker: Can they both lose? Can I root for injuries?

I will take this as also a Warriors vs. OKC thread.
Go Warriors.
When you lead 3-1, and you wind up at a Game 7, you deserve no sympathy.
Gin & Tonic
@Troublesome Carp fka Geeno: You’re aware, I assume, that the NBA playoff games draw anywhere from 7 to 10 times the Nielsen ratings of the NHL playoff games?
Adam L Silverman
Well this took an unexpectedly quick turn!
ThresherK
Wow. I didn’t expect that.
Tinare
Woohoo!

RUUUUUUUUUUUUST! SHEEEEEEEEEEERY!

Lord Stanley won’t be giving anything to the Warriors after they beat the Thunder tonight.
JCJ
@rikyrah:
True, but I became a huge KD fan when he was at Texas. I will feel bad for him if they finish blowing this. That said, Go Warriors!
geg6
@Gin & Tonic:
No one in Pittsburgh gives a shit about basketball. Not even when we had a team. Hockey is vastly superior for pure entertainment value and excitement. Pro basketball is horrid. Haven’t sat through a game since the early 80s. Too boring. College ball is 1000 times better, IMHO.
khead
@rikyrah:
The first 6 minutes of the 4th quarter in Game 6 was pretty much a miracle courtesy of Klay Thompson. I will, of course, take it.
geg6
@Betty Cracker:
Thanks, Betty!

@Gin & Tonic:
You’re aware that shit draws millions of flies? That does not mean I want to watch it.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist. I hate basketball, I love hockey so that means I also hate the NHL. For me the hockey season ended a couple months ago, the rollerball on ice thing playing to its end this week is a sad imitation.
redshirt
I hope Cole Bigfoots this.
geg6
@redshirt:
Only if they blow this lead. Right now he’s glued to his Laz-z-boy.
Adam L Silverman
@geg6: I believe that’s: he is one with the barc-a-lounger. Its a very Zen like state.
Old Dan and Little Anne
Go Pens! The last minute of a Game 7 basketball playoff is entertaining enough.
Gin & Tonic
@efgoldman: You enjoy your ice hockey game. I forget, does Boston still have a team?
Tissue Thin Pseudonym
@efgoldman:
That’s harsh. BC turned out to be overrated, but they did finish 40-1 this year.
geg6
@Gin & Tonic:
Not in my tv market. The ratings for the roundball game tonight may not even register here.
The Golux
I was expecting to root for the Sharks, since they’ve never won the Cup, but then I found out that one of the Pens led his high school, the same one I graduated from, to the state championship. So I have divided loyalties.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym
@efgoldman: BU seems lost without Poulin; the sort of player who can score OT gold medal winning goals in consecutive Olympics can cover a lot of holes. And with nine graduating seniors this year, Durocher has his work cut out for him rebuilding.
redshirt
@Tissue Thin Pseudonym: BU lost? Try UMaine hockey, former powerhouse of the country. Now a piddling team. They’re losing the state too due to the poison introduced into our system.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym
@redshirt: Maine is definitely lost, but you must be talking about the men.
jerry
Is there anyone else out there who thinks the San Jose Sharks have the coolest fucking logo in the history of professional sports?
redshirt
@Tissue Thin Pseudonym: Yes, sexistly.
Adam L Silverman
Is it just me or are the World Cup of Hockey commercials terrible? I’m not sure who or what the faux interviewer in the commercial is supposed to be a parody of, but they are just off putting. To the point of making me not want to watch the World Cup of Hockey this year.
Adam L Silverman
@efgoldman: What is worse than terrible? Heinous? Horrible? Whatever it is that’s what they are.
Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant)
@Adam L Silverman: Turrble

@Tissue Thin Pseudonym: And Marv Albert. And Marv Albert’s kid. And Joe Buck. And Bob Costa, etc.
Bitter Scribe
@jerry: That’s definitely your opinion. I think it looks like a big bug.
Adam L Silverman
Well that sucked! The outcome. The game was quite exciting.
redshirt
@Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant): I understood that reference!
redshirt
@Adam L Silverman: Did the sports team lose/win?
Adam L Silverman
@redshirt: The Penguins beat the Sharks 3-2 with a late 3rd period goal.

Fun fact: the first woman to manage a pro baseball team gets the W!

I used to like Basketball, long ago in High School. My High School was in the tournament every year, was runner-up / came in second by losing in OT on year, and won the state championship one year in 3 OTs. That year I couldn’t utter a work for a week, I yelled my voice out.
But then after I got home from the Navy, one job I had was Production Assistant at the local Public TV station. As PAs we did a little of everything, running a sound board, setting lights for a theatrical production we videotaped for broadcast, running cameras for various boring things.
One boring thing was running cameras for the HS BB championship. I ran a camera for either 4 games a day for 3 days or 3 games a day for 4 days. I forget which exactly. I knew nothing about most of the schools, and the BB quality seemed low compared to the games I had watched as a HS student, where I played in the PEP band and watched the whole season.
Bu the end of the second year of doing a dozen games straight had burned the Basketball Viewing brain cells out of my brain. Now I hate Basketball at every level, HS, College, NBA, National Teams in the Olympics. Hates ’em all. Don’t watch them.
Years ago we went to a state press organization annual conference, with the Mrs, who worked in news at the time. I had no races in the awards hunt and so left the banquet when they started handing out awards, to watch a hockey game on the great TV sets and cable system available at this resort we were staying at.
WE didn’t get a TV signal you could really watch hockey with, invisible puck was a deal breaker for most people. So I sat diwn with a 6-pack of beer to watch hockey, and gradually realized that the banquet had resulted in food poisoning…… yuck!
I sat on the toilet with a plastic wastecan between my legs every 20 minutes 5 eruptive minutes, drank a big glass of water, laid back down in bed for 15 minutes, then did it again. I was pretty tired by the time Mrs J got home to our room, and it didn’t stop then. About 8 am I was done, napped a little longer while Mrs J checked us out of the room, packed up our stuff, and was started the 4 hour drive back home… That experience appears to have severely shrunk my interest in hockey.
Also, when we stopped for fuel, Mrs J got a pepperoni roll and an orange pop – I was OK with the pepperoni roll, ght the smell of that orange pop nearly did me in. I rolled my window down and hung out in the slipstream like a dog, and made it OK. But i can’t tough standard Orange Pop to this day, 30 years later. Hockey too, just no fun.
So Football and Baseball is all I have left.
