Colombia should have beaten Brazil in the World Cup QF, though had they done so, we wouldn’t have experienced those six astonishing minutes in Belo Horizonte. They’re still an elite side, a class above the US, though I feel as if James Rodriguez made the wrong choice to go to Real.

Agreed – we do have some quality players, but not enough top-class international players to consistently compete well against other strong international sides. One of the bitter ironies is that Brad Guzan is a top-class goalkeeper, who unfortunately is stuck on both a terrible English professional side (Aston-Villa) and a second-rate international side (US). Well yes, Tim Howard was also top-class in his prime, but in the sunset of his professional career at 37, having lost his starting gig with Everton of the EPL mid-season 2015-16, and like quite a few over-the-hill European stars do now, is heading over to the US this summer to finish his career in the MLS as the GK for the Colorado Rapids.
