It’s really hard to root for Costa Rica after all the crap that has happened in San Jose down the years, but i guess we’ll manage.

And now, the most nail-biting moment: Of all the recordings they have which are named “National Anthem*”, will they play the right one?
(*ETA: More properly, “Himno Nacional…”.)
Onkel Fritze
@burnspbesq: What crap?
AdamK
I never did care for sportsball, but I swear the older I get the more sportstalk sounds like a foreign language to me.
Onkel Fritze
Well that sucks
Steeplejack
¡Caramba! Goal!
Onkel Fritze
Better now

@Onkel Fritze:
Crap, literally. At the old Estadio Saprissa, it was common for Tico fans to throw everything from coins to batteries to baggies full of human waste at US players. Add an old, rock-hard Astroturf surface, and it was a terrible place to play.
Supposedly the fans behave better at the spiffy new Estadio Nacional.

@burnspbesq: Isn’t that a normal (not to say acceptable) thing from Central and South American stadia? Offhand, I remember Shep Messing writing about it.
I guess, being from the US and never having gone abroad for soccer , I’m asking: What is the unwritten rule for too far in this circumstance?
burnspbesq
@ThresherK:
I don’t know the rule. In a WCQ, the officials could halt play and award the match to the visitors if it got bad enough (there was a march forfeited in the Euro 16 qualifiers when the visiting goalie was hit by a flare and had to be hospitalized). Takes a lot of huevos to do that.

Anyone know why Campbell is not playing for CRC?
Onkel Fritze
Colombia is playing their second string here. That might have been a mistake.

@ThresherK:
I’ve experienced “away” matches for the USA at home. Mexico at thr Rose Bowl and Guatemala at RFK. Not pleasant being outnumbered 93,000 to 200 in the stands.
My all-time favorite soccer fan experience was at St. Jakobs Park in Basel (the site of this year’s Europa League final). I was there on opening night of the 2005-06 league season. FC Basel had won the league away from home on the last day of the previous season. They got their rings, hung the banner, and did a lap of honor with the trophy. It was pretty stinkin’ cool.

Secure 2nd place in the group with a loss against CR and end up playing Brazil in the quarters. Sounds like a sound plan. That’s how my Colombians roll.

If it turns out that Koeman is the new Everton manager, the third Costa Rica goal is a nice calling card for Oviedo.

@Onkel Fritze:
Peru could still fuck up all our calculations.
Onkel Fritze
Or maybe Colombia can turn it around after all. 3-2.
ThresherK (GPad)
@burnspbesq: I have heard about that, of course. Glad to see the USMNT guys mention it in interviews when needed, wish they didn’t have to.
I’m now listening to pre-season CFL. This internet this has its uses.
Onkel Fritze
And it’s over. They fucked it up. Shouldn’t have got my hopes up for anything else.

@ThresherK (GPad):
The CFL? That’s a bridge too far, man.

@Temporarily Max McGee (Soon Enough to Be Andy K Again):
How about pro lacrosse?
Onkel Fritze
@burnspbesq:
Interesting. I didn’t know hookers played lacrosse.
