Somebody get Dunga some collar stays before the Fashion Police catch up with him.
humboldtblue
He’s an ugly Pete Rose.
I’ve taken to pouring the liquid contents from a re-used plastic bottle onto an injury and it’s as effective as it appears.
burnspbesq
Neither side looking like much so far.
humboldtblue
What a brilliant passage of play. The footwork and vision were beautiful.
burnspbesq
Rodriguez, the Peruvian central defender, has been excellent.
humboldtblue
Nice defense, Peru
burnspbesq
Dani Alves gets away with all kinds of shit.

OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
burnspbesq
Oh dear.
philadelphialawyer
handball.
and the ref got it wrong.
and he took forever to get it wrong.
and he tried to get replay info, which is against the rules.
total referee failure.
Ronnie Pudding
Wow, epic refereeing failure. Should be tons of added time though.

I happened to turn this on at about the 74th minute. Another “Hand of God” goal, eh?
I assume (as then) there’s no way to fix the mistake.
Weird game.
Cheers,
Scott.
burnspbesq
Going to be interesting to see how much stoppage time.
burnspbesq
Six minutes.

“Peru wins the group. Brazil is out!”
Cheers,

Holy cow!

Boy are my neighbors going to be happy!

@philadelphialawyer:
As I understand it, they officially tried some kind of video-replay-rule in this tournament. That should kill it for good.
philadelphialawyer
seems like there shld have been more stoppage time…considering that peru burned up almost a minute of it with that sub right at the 90th minute…terrible call, but brazil sorta had it coming…they did squat all game, and even after the goal didn’t really do much…they needed neymar…barca kinda sucks for not letting him go….what do they need him for now?
humboldtblue
Mountain men.
burnspbesq
In fairness, Peru’s defense put on a clinic, and there was a pretty clear penalty that wasn’t called late in the first half. But … that was pretty egregious.
philadelphialawyer
@Onkel Fritze: not sure handball or not was in the purview of that video review experiment…jp said it was not allowed, but he is not always accurate…
philadelphialawyer
@burnspbesq: totally true….horrendous call, but peru had a bad call too, and brazil just could not break through….
Onkel Fritze
@philadelphialawyer:
Apparently they told him he could either play the Copa or the Olympics. He went for the Olympics.
philadelphialawyer
@Onkel Fritze: right, but why couldn’t neymar play both? again, what does barca need him for now, or doing the olympics?
saying now on espn that the ref was trying to get in touch with the fourth official, not a video review, but he didn’t see it…nor, apparently, did the assistant ref, whom the ref conferred with first…
Onkel Fritze
@philadelphialawyer:
I didn’t know that either but that’s what they said on Colombian TV. I googled it just now and sure enough FIFA decided to test it during the Copa.
burnspbesq
Dunga is soooooooo fired.
Onkel Fritze
@philadelphialawyer:
Well, there’s always the chance of injuries and if he plays both he’s just not going to be fit for the new season. The recuperation that these players need would be shot to hell playing both. If I were responsible in Barca, I wouldn’t see that any differently. They pay him, as it’s known in professional circles, a metric shit-load of money.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym
@philadelphialawyer: Barca’s position is that Neymar was wearing down towards the end of the season, and they wanted him to play in only one summer tournament so he could get some rest. This has been a standard reaction of a lot of clubs, so it doesn’t affect just him.
philadelphialawyer
@Onkel Fritze: yeah, i hear you, but i think it kinda sucks anyway…they use him in so many games…league, cup, champions league, but a few games in the summer for his national team are going to burn him out? and brazil really needs him…its not like in the past, where they had any number of scoring threats to choose from…
Tissue Thin Pseudonym
@burnspbesq: Has anything gone right for Brazil since the opening whistle of the World Cup semi?
Tissue Thin Pseudonym
@philadelphialawyer: It’s also all of the training that they do for the national team. Each tournament is basically a month’s less rest.
dc
@philadelphialawyer: The regular club season is long, from August through the end of May. And Barça plays a lot of games, Liga, Copa del Rey, Champions, Mundial de Clubes (last season), Copa de España, Copa de Europa (last season). The players need at least of month of vacation. If any player does both competitions, they will not get that down time, and their performance during the season will hurt for it.
burnspbesq
@Tissue Thin Pseudonym:
They scored seven against Haiti.
Onkel Fritze
@philadelphialawyer:
It’s not so much the number of games as the fact that he would not really be able to take a meaningful break during summertime and he couldn’t prepare properly during pre-season. That’s extremely important for these players and has been a problem for players and clubs in the past, even only playing one tournament. Playing both tournaments, he would be a certain write-off for next season.
philadelphialawyer
@dc: that’s kinda my point..barca uses him for ten months of the year, including in some of the less august competitions you mentioned, but his country can’t use him for two tournaments? even though one of them is hosting the olympics? if they were so worried about his rest and recuperation, perhaps they could spare him from, say, the Copa de Espana matches?
philadelphialawyer
@Onkel Fritze: couldn’t he take off the very beginning of the barca season? starting at the end of the olympics, that would give him some downtime….plus, barca is not exactly strapped for talent, are they?
philadelphialawyer
I guess I just like to see the best players…one reason why I am not so keen on the olympics, with the neither fish nor fowl, not the full national team but not a u 21 team either. I can see why neymar chose the olympics, with brazil hosting….but i don’t have to like it….lol!
Onkel Fritze
@philadelphialawyer:
Sure, but Brazil ain’t paying the bills, Barca is. FMM, the soccer tournament during the Olympics is second-rate anyway and they should leave it to the Under-21-teams.
philadelphialawyer
@Onkel Fritze: agree with your second point re the olympics being somewhat bogus, but still sympathize with neymar for choosing the olympics this particular year, b/c brazil is hosting….they really need to give their home fans something, after that debacle two year ago. and now this….
Onkel Fritze
@philadelphialawyer: lol..if you listen very closely, you’ll hear me playing the worlds smallest fiddle…
BubbaDave
@philadelphialawyer:
Where have you gone, Richard Maa-ayhew?
A nation turns its tear-filled eyes to you
Ooh-ooh-ooh
dc
@philadelphialawyer: Barça doesn’t “use” him. Barça pays him a lot of money so he can play on a team with which in three seasons he’s won more titles than most will win in their lifetimes. That aside, the players don’t just show up and start to play at top level as a team. Barça will start preseason training in mid-July. Those who’ve been in summer tournaments delay joining the team such that they all get enough vacation time. However, the later a player joins preseason training, the longer he will take to be in top performing shape. As far as summer tournaments, they are month long commitments because the national teams train together prior to the beginning of the competitions.
Temporarily Max McGee (Soon Enough to Be Andy K Again)
@philadelphialawyer:
I think that the Olympics being in Brazil is a factor, but the truth is he will be seen by more people across the world if he plays i the Olympics, and he’ll stand out more against the lesser competition (where Messi or James Rodriguez might outshine him in the Copa Americas). It’s a better chance to make more from advertising, especially in the East Asian market- which is probably going to be paying more attention to the European Championshp now that it’s started.
Shorter me: He’s trying to keep the highest profile he can.
philadelphialawyer
@dc: yeah, he and barca have won all those titles…and so that means that they CAN’T spare him for a couple of months? seems kinda greedy and selfish to me….
philadelphialawyer
@Temporarily Max McGee (Soon Enough to Be Andy K Again): again, he’s the selfish one, when the winningest team in club in international football for however many years running makes him choose which of two major tournies he can play in…during a time period when nothing is really doing on the club level anyway….
Onkel Fritze
@philadelphialawyer: Greedy and selfish? They’re a world-class top-level sports team…those guys are NEVER greedy and selfish. Look at the Yankees or the Patriots…basically a collection of saints…
philadelphialawyer
@Onkel Fritze: funny you mentioned the yankees, b/c steinbrenner pulled this same crap with “his” players during the baseball “classics.” didn’t want his talent to get hurt, tired, etc, playing for their countries… anyway, who said american sports teams were not greedy and selfish?…they are…
Onkel Fritze
@philadelphialawyer: So you just expected better from Europeans? ;)
Tissue Thin Pseudonym
@philadelphialawyer: They won La Liga by one point over Madrid. No, they can’t spare him for a couple of months.
philadelphialawyer
@Onkel Fritze: eh, more like hoped?
