Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Donald Trump’s scheduled speech today at St. Anselm College’s New Hampshire Institute of Politics was originally supposed to be his big, long advertised response to Secretary Clinton’s speech in San Diego and Senator Warren’s speech at the American Constitution Society. After the events of early Sunday morning in Orlando, the speech has apparently been reworked into a policy address dealing with terrorism. The coverage begins at 2:30 PM EDT and the live feed is embedded below.

This speech will reflect how much Trump is willing to accept guidance and restraint from his handlers at such a pivotal moment -how far can he get through it without stepping on a self-created land mine,?

I’m torn between wanting to listen, so as to be informed, and the utter dread and hatred this jackass inspires in me.

In deference to my blood pressure, and to avoid alarming my cats with screaming outbursts, I believe I’ll skip it. I am sure it will be recapped very capably.

I don’t want to hear him. What matters is what the other voters who were/are considering him think. So I will watch and listen to what media narative is and what “people” say about it. Yes i should listen to him to know but I also know he craves attention. Anyway if he finally melts down and his supporters visibly start to abandon him, I will go back and watch a replay.
Anyone else been remembering the 70’s and discussions about how hijackers and hostage takers were doing it for attention and media attention caused copy catting? I still feel there is some truth to that and Trump, not to mention some of the killers really feel like deja vu.
Some of the Orlando coverage mentions places I used to know. Really uncomfortable. first press conference was listed as Orange and Michigan which is about 1/2 mile from my parents house until 7 years ago, less than that from one of my former apartments. the shooting seems to have been near another former apartment though I don’t think this club was built then. Problem with Orlando is it keeps growing and adding streets. I can get lost near my childhood home because major new roads cut right through it. I haven’t lived in Orlando since 93 but I swear the mayor’s name sounds like one of the same people.

So where are these American citizens who are Muslin supposed to be deported too? Ancestral homelands might not think they are their citizens either. They may be of multiple national origins as many Americans are. There have been some Muslims here since the founding and national origins 2+ centuries old definately aren’t going to be an alternative homeland. Religious conversions happen, how long were Ali’s ancestors here?
Even if they do have an alternative homeland, that country may not want to make it easy for us, as I have thought since he began his campaign attacking Mexicans. We have given past preference to people fleeing persecution so we have a lot that it would be murder to send back.

I mean, I’m trying to picture which of the people I know in my circle (overwhelmingly white and middle class) could potentially go on a killing spree and the number’s not small, based on their expressed ideologies – plenty of those who vote GOP are certainly hateful enough.

But how many of these people would actually follow through on their “second amendment solutions” bullshit? Very few – my guess is none, actually. Certainly none of them have so far. That’s true even of the people who are radical enough to assemble into “militias” – the majority of them are all talk, just hanging around the shooting range talking about what they’re totally going to do, when the UN One World Order Zionist Occupation Government Black Helicopters come for them… any minute now. He killed four people and shot seven, before a very brave lady stood up and risked being shot at in order to get a look at his license plate and report him to the police, who stopped him. The point here is, his parents knew he had problems — he had a long downward spiral of being stalled in his career and unable to form relationships. But shooting people was something they never fathomed. They didn’t even know he owned guns or knew how to use them. Eliot Rodger’s parents did tell the police that they thought he was going to hurt someone, and the police did nothing because he appeared to be coherent and reasonable.

Funny how his father George, though born directly into a polygamist society, was more worldly and had a far more refined sense of social justice than his miserable kid, and now Willard’s boys are even more watered down than he is.

I read the transcript and it’s amazing how many times he repeated himself or just flat ad-libbed.
But in his actual speech he says, “Born in Afghan, of Afghan parents”. Now that could be a glitch in the prompter or it could be him reverting to what he believes the actual truth is, or just him flat out lying. In any event, if all you watch is Fox News you’re most likely going to now believe Mateen was an immigrant who came here to kill Americans.

It is horrible to bear witness to the progression of painful failures when someone with mental illness goes violent. It is traumatic so my sympathy on having to have even known about this. The anguish for his family must have been and probably still is, past surreal. And of course the victims. The escalation to violence can be quite sudden and even then, its virtually impossible to get action before they do something. Even then, unless its really violent, anything relatively minor in scale will just get a few days hospitalization and meds that they frequently stop taking at some point. It is non trivial that their family is frequently scared of them also……

@Adam L Silverman: modern day retelling of an old blatant ripoff of Captain Marvel. Sometimes very cool, sometimes edgy for the sake of being edgy (like the pregnancy issue that was literally an entire issue showing someone give birth that Moore defended from his critics (who called it pornographic as it was quite graphic) as being artistic without noticing that it was incredibly boring), sometimes dark for being dark (imagine Captain Marvel Jr, still in his superhero body for 20 years with no other heroes/villains and using his knowledge to take over companies and causally rape women), it’s a mixed bag but probably worth reading if you can find it.

Trump started off OK, with sympathy, support and acceptance of gays. This alone has to give some conservatives fits. But then his entire immigration platform is based on a lie. And he talks about gays, Christians and Jews but excludes Muslims. And then later talks about supposed Islamic radicals coming in and indoctrinating our innocent children. What a mess. But I wonder how many of his supporters will eat this nonsense up. It’s lucky that he uses the teleprompter so poorly, which blunts the effectiveness of his loathsome rhetoric.

I finally decided enough time had passed since the shooting that I could bear to watch Trump’s speech.

The best thing about the speech is that Trump defended the idea that LGBT people should not be the target of terrorist attacks. “Our nation stands together in solidarity with the members of Orlando’s LGBT Community.” I’m guessing that Trump’s advisors have gotten through to him that every time he attacks another minority group it potentially costs him votes.

I’m tempted to write that the worst part of the speech was everything else in it. But one thing that stands out is the claim that Muslim communities in the United States are concealing information about terrorists. “But the Muslim communities must cooperate with law enforcement and turn in the people who they know are bad – and they do know where they are.”
