Donald Trump’s scheduled speech today at St. Anselm College’s New Hampshire Institute of Politics was originally supposed to be his big, long advertised response to Secretary Clinton’s speech in San Diego and Senator Warren’s speech at the American Constitution Society. After the events of early Sunday morning in Orlando, the speech has apparently been reworked into a policy address dealing with terrorism. The coverage begins at 2:30 PM EDT and the live feed is embedded below.
Schlemazel Khan
I’d rather have sharpened bamboo spears jammed into my ears than to listen to this inflated asshole speak on anything. Sorry, he is dead to me.
cmorenc
This speech will reflect how much Trump is willing to accept guidance and restraint from his handlers at such a pivotal moment -how far can he get through it without stepping on a self-created land mine,?
PatrickG
There is not enough whiskey in the world for me to play that video. I’ll let masochists and people who get paid to listen to Hair Furor excerpt it for me.
Elizabelle
Um, pandas for $200, Adam.
Not planning to watch this, but you guys can pull out the interesting stuff in the comment thread.
I say we have dueling videos, with Hillary’s speech up too. Hovercraft put up a link in previous political thread.
cckids
I’m torn between wanting to listen, so as to be informed, and the utter dread and hatred this jackass inspires in me.
In deference to my blood pressure, and to avoid alarming my cats with screaming outbursts, I believe I’ll skip it. I am sure it will be recapped very capably.
Adam L Silverman
@cmorenc: We’ll see how much he can stay on the teleprompter fed script.
Punchy
You call it a speech, when in reality it will be just shouty words shouted into a microphone and an orange man turning red from the fact that he’s 70 and he’s shouting all the damn time.
PatrickG
My first FYWP-disappeared comment! I feel all grown up now.
Wasn’t a very interesting comment, just echoed what @Schlemazel Khan and @cckids: said. :)
Keith G
That’s a very White crowd ya got there.

If that video plays anything other than Rick Astley, I’m going to be annoyed.
Adam L Silverman
@Elizabelle: did she give a speech today? send me the link and I’ll put up the video.

@cmorenc:
None at all. Trump wants lackeys, not advisers.

An adorable pic of McSquinty in front of that yoooge flag, and a blue tie? Reaching across the aisle at last!

There is a pile of orange defecation making incoherent noise on my television — this idiot is an insult to the human race.
Enhanced Voting Techinques
So, will this speech be the one that finally kills his candidacy before the GOP convention? Apparently his tweet yesterday has even the GOP irritated with him and this was after the bad week Trump already had.
dmsilev
I assume he’s going to dry-hump an American flag. Again.
Adam L Silverman
Well he just misstated that Omar Mateen was born in Afghanistan. Omar Mateen was born in the US.
Kay
Clinton had an event in Cleveland today if you-all want to watch. Sherrod Brown looks terrible but he might be just horrified about the shooting.
Elie
I can’t bring myself to watch it/hear it. I want to throw up every time I hear his crass, gross, ignorant tone and voice.
MomSense
Orlahndo. Did he just say that the person was born in Afghan? It sounded like he started by saying that and then tried to correct by saying born to Afghan parents.
Maybe the Republicans hate the use of teleprompters so much because they can barely read.
Corner Stone
He’s going all in on banning Muslims. This is great.
Kay
Trump’s been great at setting expectations really low. They’ll treat him like Lincoln if he can put a paragraph together that doesn’t crow about how great he is or tell a huge lie.
Trollhattan
@Roger Moore:
While Willard didn’t exactly surround himself with sociopaths of the sort Donny is attracted to, it was painfully obvious he only chose sycophants; how else could he possibly have gone into the election not aware he would lose? Didn’t prepare a concession speech?
Deliver us from bidnezmen cum politicians.
Corner Stone
He started out by saying we should respond to this event and stand together as one people, as Americans. So…by process he is saying a Muslim can not also be an American.
This should really put this guy at the end of his run for President.
Helen
@Corner Stone: Yup. It’s awesome.
Kay
@Corner Stone:
So they have to be deported? Have their citizenship stripped?
Corner Stone
“Radical Islam” This crowd is not really into the speech. he’s trying to repeat key terms that he thinks will fire them up, but they are not responding appropriately. I think he may start a failure spiral and start screaming at them by the end of this speech.
Corner Stone
He’s at an almost “Please clap.” stage of the speech.
This crowd is just not into this speech.
Adam L Silverman
@Kay: Thanks, I just found an embeddable video, which I’ll post up in a moment.
cckids
@Corner Stone: He doesn’t seem to know how to give a speech that isn’t at one of his fan-filled rallies.
Roger Moore
@MomSense:
I think the teleprompters are a lot harder to read after they’ve been flecked with spittle.
Corner Stone
This should forever be referenced as the “Ooga Booga” speech.
Felonius Monk
Our problems would be fewer if we could only deport der TrumpenFarter and strip him of his citizenship. That’s an idea I could fully support.
Adam L Silverman
And the conjuring words “radical Islam” make an appearance.
zzyzx
SAY THE WORDS! THEY’RE MAGIC!!!
Elie
@Corner Stone:
Thank you for listening for those of us who just can’t — at least not today for me…
Corner Stone
I honestly think people might start leaving this speech shortly.
schrodinger's cat
How is Trump going to identify who is Muslim?
Felonius Monk
Radical Trumpism is a far greater danger to this nation than is radical Islam.
Kay
@Corner Stone:
This shooting is full of all kinds of complicated factors for the Trumpsters- the gun angle alone trips them up. Does the shooter, a US citizen, have unrestricted gun rights that can’t be regulated in any way OR does “possible Muslim” carry the day?
Corner Stone
The NRA and the second amendment. What a horrible person this man is.
Keith G
He speaks with a indefinite platitude strewn vernacular.
“We have to address this head on”
“We have to figure out what’s going on.”
“It’s going to be great.”
“Large numbers of Somali….”
“She supports so much of what is wrong”
Wait…He is going to protect my (Gay person) quality of life? Will he say this same thing in Cleveland?
LAO
@Corner Stone: Is that poorly delivered or the content? Asking for a friend.
Adam L Silverman
@MomSense: Nope, he stated flat out that Omar Mateen was born in Afghanistan. He was born in New York in 1986, meaning his family came here pre-Taliban and pre-al Qaeda.
Shell
The very first thing he said in announcing this speech, was it would be in New Hampshire, where he had his first primary victory. Because of course its always all about him.
hovercraft
@MomSense:
Yes, he was born an Afghan of Afghan parents.
Adam L Silverman
He’s coming close to calling for a Trump version of the Enabling Act:
http://www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/timeline/enabling.htm
Corner Stone
@LAO: The content isn’t hitting as hard as he probably thought/hoped. It’s also a bad delivery. He keeps repeating little phrases like he always does but it’s much more awkward when he transitions back to the prompter speech.
Kay
@schrodinger’s cat:
I’m convinced he didn’t know that a lot of immigration is based on country of origin and no one told him, so he just grabbed “religious test” because he’s really not very bright. Now of course he can’t back down, because he’s not just dumb- he’s also stubborn and entitled
Elie
@Kay:
Yeah, this isn’t a clean “winning” situation for their shtick. Trump was hoping to use this as a natural springboard to “respond” to Hillary — and Obama on his policy ideas (like he has some). He can’t get there from here — too lame and too stupid. Hilz team will be ready for him and I am sure they are taking good notes…
Adam L Silverman
Well I’m sure Secretary of Defense of Carter, AG Lynch, and Director of National Intelligence Clapper now feel that their work has been appreciated.
gvg
I don’t want to hear him. What matters is what the other voters who were/are considering him think. So I will watch and listen to what media narative is and what “people” say about it. Yes i should listen to him to know but I also know he craves attention. Anyway if he finally melts down and his supporters visibly start to abandon him, I will go back and watch a replay.
Anyone else been remembering the 70’s and discussions about how hijackers and hostage takers were doing it for attention and media attention caused copy catting? I still feel there is some truth to that and Trump, not to mention some of the killers really feel like deja vu.
Some of the Orlando coverage mentions places I used to know. Really uncomfortable. first press conference was listed as Orange and Michigan which is about 1/2 mile from my parents house until 7 years ago, less than that from one of my former apartments. the shooting seems to have been near another former apartment though I don’t think this club was built then. Problem with Orlando is it keeps growing and adding streets. I can get lost near my childhood home because major new roads cut right through it. I haven’t lived in Orlando since 93 but I swear the mayor’s name sounds like one of the same people.
Keith G
This is a dismal failure. I wonder how tight Paul Ryan’s ass hole is clinching right now.
Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (Formerly Mumphrey, et al.)
I watched about a minute and a half of Señor Trump’s tremendous, tremendous, great speech. Has anybody else seen that he has the weirdest mannerisms with his hands when he speaks? He holds his hands up and flails them around, but only from the elbow down. He holds his upper arm right up against his body. It strikes me as, dare I say it, slightly effeminate. Anybody else noticed this?
Miss Bianca
@Adam L Silverman: Are you watching this so the rest of us don’t have to? (on my lunch break, and don’t want to risk violent indigestion).
Wapiti
@schrodinger’s cat: Anyone who leaves the venue before Trump finishes will be suspected of being sympathetic to Muslims. They’ll go on the list.

And I have no idea where the thousands of immigrants involved in terrorism in the US since 9-11 came from. There is no empirical evidence for that assertion:

@hovercraft:
I thought he said born inAfghan. @Adam L Silverman:
He was definitely trying to construct the description to give the impression that he was born in Afghanistan–but I think he just said “in Afghan”. The guy is both stupid and mean so it is likely he both tried to say the guy was born in Afghanistan and screwed up the name of the country.
Corner Stone
@hovercraft: he also shimmied his body slightly in a small twisting manner. It was so awkward you could almost see him silently counting, “One The Donald, Two The Donald, Three The Donald, Four The Donald”
Shell
No thats a real trifecta!

All of us have a duty to prevent this con-man, this boil on humanity from ever being anywhere near the White House and simultaneously we must rid congress of control by the entire GOP; They are an insult to our nation, a danger to the world and a toxic poison to our shared humanity. @Schlemazel Khan:
Likewise. I developed this strategy last election to avoid putting a chair through my TV/computer screen – read the speech after the fact, maybe, more likely listen to its dissection by other people. But don’t actually watch the douchebag.
Adam L Silverman
@Corner Stone: And the repeated almost positive remarks of solidarity with LGBTQ Americans is not going to play well either. Its not in the room. And it won’t after the fact. He just said if you’re anti-LGBTQ you can’t come into America. I don’t think he actually understands who his supporters are.

This is a truly awful speech. Incredibly bad, hateful content and messaging combined with one of the worst deliveries I have ever seen at this level.

@Adam L Silverman: He also makes it sound like Clinton and Obama are responsible for everything that has happened since 2001. George Bush never existed

@Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (Formerly Mumphrey, et al.):
I have. It’s part of his over the topness that I think will make him unattractive to more stodgy conservatives. Corner Stone
@Adam L Silverman: It’s a tough one because he started by saying the LGBT community was representing all Americans by living their free life. But Muslims can not be real Americans.

He just pivoted from complimenting “out great Muslim communities” in America for blaming them for not turning in “the bad people and they know who they are”.
gvg
So where are these American citizens who are Muslin supposed to be deported too? Ancestral homelands might not think they are their citizens either. They may be of multiple national origins as many Americans are. There have been some Muslims here since the founding and national origins 2+ centuries old definately aren’t going to be an alternative homeland. Religious conversions happen, how long were Ali’s ancestors here?
Even if they do have an alternative homeland, that country may not want to make it easy for us, as I have thought since he began his campaign attacking Mexicans. We have given past preference to people fleeing persecution so we have a lot that it would be murder to send back.
He’s an idiot, but we already knew it. I was just mentioning a few reasons.
Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (Formerly Mumphrey, et al.)

Presidential elections are really long. I wonder if there will be a dawning recognition that Trump just isn’t very smart.
Watch the interview where he’s asked if women should be punished for abortion. The long pause. Corner Stone
Son of a bitch is going full on Stasi mode.

Of course! That is all he is capable of doing. And even with this thin gruel, Hillary is gonna pants him again in whatever she responds. Honestly… this will destroy the republican party. @Adam L Silverman: Nope, no press statement at this time.
D58826
Decision to overthrow the governments of Libya and Syria are the reason for ISIS. Seems there is some small piece missing here. Maybe Trump can enlist our ally Saddam Hussein. Oh wait?
How do you respond to a speech that is one lie and scaremongering after another. NBC reporting is saying there are a couple of mistakes in this otherwise forceful speech.
Great FSM Hitler/Stalin/Mussolini all gave forceful speeches.
Chris
@Adam L Silverman:
Don’t you love it?
“We had no idea!” “But he was always so nice!” “Who would’ve thought a nice young man like that could just snap!” … is the cliched response of neighbors, co-workers, relatives, classmates et al to virtually everybody who turns out to be a murderer or other capital criminal. But Muslims, unlike everyone else, are supposed to be able to just know when one of their own is going to turn bad?
What are they supposed to do? Look into his eyes and see his soul?
Corner Stone
Any person who saw the HRC speech earlier and then watched the Trump Ooga Booga speech can’t seriously consider ever voting for Trump.
Even if you hate Hillary, liberals and all that is PC in the world there is just no fucking way. That was one of the worst events I have ever witnessed. What is the opposite of “builds confidence” ? This speech is in the dictionary featured beside that term.
SiubhanDuinne
@Adam L Silverman:
Did you notice he kept saying “LBGQ”? I know he got the order wrong at least twice. But this may well be the first time in his life he has given the LGBTQ community a thought, so I suppose he can be forgiven. /

So just what “the Muslim community” was supposed to do about him remains, conveniently, a mystery.
Kay
@Elie:
He waited too long to “respond” to Clinton. I was wondering if that’s because he believes responding is weak. That’s a pretty common belief among egotistical blowhards I have known. They have to control every aspect- “the best defense is an offense, acting beats reacting” all that stuff.

@Miss Bianca:
I mean, you also have the problem that even if you do know that he’s “bad meat in a can…” Okay. Now what? Only a small minority of people who express these kinds of thoughts actually follow through on them. I mean, I’m trying to picture which of the people I know in my circle (overwhelmingly white and middle class) could potentially go on a killing spree and the number’s not small, based on their expressed ideologies – plenty of those who vote GOP are certainly hateful enough.
But how many of these people would actually follow through on their “second amendment solutions” bullshit? Very few – my guess is none, actually. Certainly none of them have so far. That’s true even of the people who are radical enough to assemble into “militias” – the majority of them are all talk, just hanging around the shooting range talking about what they’re totally going to do, when the UN One World Order Zionist Occupation Government Black Helicopters come for them… any minute now. Even those freaks, in most cases, don’t cross the line into actual terrorism.
Adam L Silverman
@SiubhanDuinne: He’s never used the acronym, it was loaded into the teleprompter and the speech was written by someone else. Well, if all Muslims musthave known about the evil-doers doing evil in their midst and must be held accountable for same, then I’d guess each end every Catholic knew about the pedophiles in their churches and schools and must also be communaly punished. @Chris: I have a family acquaintance whose son went on a killing spree — targeting people likely to be recent immigrants. He killed four people and shot seven, before a very brave lady stood up and risked being shot at in order to get a look at his license plate and report him to the police, who stopped him. The point here is, his parents knew he had problems — he had a long downward spiral of being stalled in his career and unable to form relationships. But shooting people was something they never fathomed. They didn’t even know he owned guns or knew how to use them. Eliot Rodger’s parents did tell the police that they thought he was going to hurt someone, and the police did nothing because he appeared to be coherent and reasonable.

@Corner Stone: I saw on the Twitter that his prepared remarks phrase it as “was born to Afghan parents who immigrated to the United States…” So he either mis-read the prompter, or wanted to improvise on this one for some other reason.

Was Willard’s inner circle all/mostly LDS? Its makeup is something I’m ignorant of.
Funny how his father George, though born directly into a polygamist society, was more worldly and had a far more refined sense of social justice than his miserable kid, and now Willard’s boys are even more watered down than he is.

Here in Jersey we just think of them as part of the moneyed elite who pull all the strings. Occasionally they go to jail, but that doesn’t diminish their roles in the system. This is Jersey, competing with NY, IL, and LA for the most corrupt state.

I heard it as “he was an Afghan, born to Afghan parents” — meaning the place of his birth is not the relevant part of the story, but rather what his parentage was. Kind of like Judge Curiel, no?

This is power, I guess — but that he doesn’t have his senses tell him that this is a bad bad scene tells me he isn’t all that competent. Add to it what Adam said that his old man was kind of a crook also. It does not surprise me that Trump would have a son in law cut from the same cloth but it also tells me son-in-law’s advice may not be worth much.

@Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (Formerly Mumphrey, et al.): It’s usually a cheap cut of meat that has been run through a tenderizer (or flattened with a mallet), dipped in seasoned flour, fried and served with gravy. It’s actually quite delicious when done correctly, though I agree it would be a pity to treat a ribeye that way!

Corner Stone
@Gin & Tonic:
I read the transcript and it’s amazing how many times he repeated himself or just flat ad-libbed.
But in his actual speech he says, “Born in Afghan, of Afghan parents”. Now that could be a glitch in the prompter or it could be him reverting to what he believes the actual truth is, or just him flat out lying. In any event, if all you watch is Fox News you’re most likely going to now believe Mateen was an immigrant who came here to kill Americans.

Florida has been corrupt for a long time. Millions of dollars of fraud characterized its Medicare and Medicaid programs and the Feds never did much. Rotten all the way through and led (in part) by very slick, well heeled Cubans.

Could he simply have been saying “born an Afghan, of Afghan parents?”

It is horrible to bear witness to the progression of painful failures when someone with mental illness goes violent. It is traumatic so my sympathy on having to have even known about this. The anguish for his family must have been and probably still is, past surreal. And of course the victims. The escalation to violence can be quite sudden and even then, its virtually impossible to get action before they do something. Even then, unless its really violent, anything relatively minor in scale will just get a few days hospitalization and meds that they frequently stop taking at some point. It is non trivial that their family is frequently scared of them also……
Corner Stone
@Chris:
I have listened to it a few times and that’s possible. I heard “in” the first couple times but then listened to see if I might hear “an”. And it’s pretty close one or the other. I think the “othering” effect or denial of his American-ness is mutually the same but location of birth would give the haters more leeway to hate on Muslim immigrants.

@Adam L Silverman: modern day retelling of an old blatant ripoff of Captain Marvel. Sometimes very cool, sometimes edgy for the sake of being edgy (like the pregnancy issue that was literally an entire issue showing someone give birth that Moore defended from his critics (who called it pornographic as it was quite graphic) as being artistic without noticing that it was incredibly boring), sometimes dark for being dark (imagine Captain Marvel Jr, still in his superhero body for 20 years with no other heroes/villains and using his knowledge to take over companies and causally rape women), it’s a mixed bag but probably worth reading if you can find it.

There are some amazing parts to it, like when Miracleman’s alter ego explains to his wife about his superheroic past (which had been wiped from her memory) and she starts mocking all of the character names.

Trump started off OK, with sympathy, support and acceptance of gays. This alone has to give some conservatives fits. But then his entire immigration platform is based on a lie. And he talks about gays, Christians and Jews but excludes Muslims. And then later talks about supposed Islamic radicals coming in and indoctrinating our innocent children. What a mess. But I wonder how many of his supporters will eat this nonsense up. It’s lucky that he uses the teleprompter so poorly, which blunts the effectiveness of his loathsome rhetoric.

I finally decided enough time had passed since the shooting that I could bear to watch Trump’s speech.
The best thing about the speech is that Trump defended the idea that LGBT people should not be the target of terrorist attacks. “Our nation stands together in solidarity with the members of Orlando’s LGBT Community.” I’m guessing that Trump’s advisors have gotten through to him that every time he attacks another minority group it potentially costs him votes.
I’m tempted to write that the worst part of the speech was everything else in it. But one thing that stands out is the claim that Muslim communities in the United States are concealing information about terrorists. “But the Muslim communities must cooperate with law enforcement and turn in the people who they know are bad – and they do know where they are.”
