This Swiss-American hopes so! I have not been following them this year but I hope for their victory any game! ;)
ETA: that’s not a good start!

I posted this in the last football thread, but the game was already over:
Besides the Euro and the Copa America, there’s another international competition going on. The ConIFA World Football Cup is taking place in Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia. ConIFA is a federation of unrecognized, sometimes unconsolidated “nations” like Somaliland and Kurdistan. Anthony Bourdain wrote an article about the Somaliland team.
Related to this thread is that two of the teams are Raetia, the Romansch speaking area of Switzerland, and Székely Land, the Hungarian speaking area of Romania.

As I said pre-tournament, I’m temperamentally not a fan of the 24-team format — I think it takes away some of the crispness of having to win or come second in your group, then going straight to the QFs. However, the past couple of days’ results are making me reconsider that.
We may end up with familiar teams in the QFs after the second round ties, but the path there for the favourites won’t be as predictable or as easy.

OT on the sports, there’s a Democratic-run Senate filibuster to get a gun control amendment passed, started by Senator Chris Murphy around 11AM ET, from what I can tell:
I’d love to see a post on it; our side doesn’t do this often and it’s an incredibly important action on their part.

@Origuy: I’m a little surprised that the Republic of Texas isn’t participating in that league. Maybe if it were a sport other than pansy liberal soccer…
