There was an article on Deadspin yesterday about how the Russian thugs appear to be well-trained (!) and purposefully starting fights with others. Then, in response, the Russian officials completely supported these brawls and the Russian fans who caused them and called it patriotism. Incredible response….not only NOT an apology, but the exact opposite. I hope they lose their ass in this game, and so do the French police.
If this is any indication, WC 2018 is going to be a complete riot.

Great half by Slovakia.
Hopefully the Russian thugs will be depressed by Russia’s embarrassing performance thus far, and if they do act up that UEFA will have the guts to toss them out of the tournament, but they probably won’t.

@Punchy: I think there was just never any qustion that the “WC 2018 is going to be a complete riot”. The Russians may have kept things in check in Sochi (small town, no history of hooliganism in Olympics), but won’t be able to do so across multiple, much larger cities. Nor do they seem willing to do that.
I also just do not see how any non-white fans will venture into Russia where fans are known to taunt and threaten their own team’s black players. 2018 will be a WC for the ages.

Besides the Euro and the Copa America, there’s another international competition going on. The ConIFA World Football Cup is taking place in Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia. ConIFA is a federation of unrecognized, sometimes unconsolidated “nations” like Somaliland and Kurdistan. Anthony Bourdain wrote an article about the Somaliland team.

France has taken some action, and deported a busload of Russian “fans.” Also, too, stickers have gone up in hotels and shops depicting a pig in Russian colors with a slash through it–i.e. we don’t serve Russian pigs.
